Prolog: Through the Caldron
Summary: Takes place three years after “The Book of Omens”. Ratar-O intends to assemble his mutant forces to attack New Thundera before the Thundercats can fully restore their civilization to its former glory and he has a new anti-Thundercat team to back them up. Meanwhile, Mumm-Ra is still out there, craving revenge…
Three years had passed since Lion-O entered the Book of Omens and presented the sacred key to the guardian. With Thundera’s natural beauty and balance restored, the Thundercats worked twenty-four-seven to summon refugees back to New Thundera and build a society in which they could live in and be proud of. But through all their triumphs, ambitions and hopes, an element of dread still lingered.
A single structure blemished the surface of New Thundera’s renewed surface, the black pyramid. Mumm-Ra had not been seen or heard from since his defeat at the hands of Lion-O in the Book of Omens, but his hideous pyramid still stood, which led Cheetara to believe Mumm-Ra was still around in some form. The other Thundercats were fully convinced of this as well.
Tygra, Panthro and Bengali had been sent to demolish the pyramid on several occasions, but somehow the structure managed to reform itself three days afterward. They tried removing and destroying the evil idols, but like the pyramid that housed them, the statues always reformed and inexplicably returned to the crypt chamber within three days of their removal. Unable to rid themselves of the Black Pyramid, the Thundercats labeled the area forbidden territory and simply monitored the pyramid for any signs of Mumm-Ra.
Cheetara’s suspicions were correct, as they most always are. Mumm-Ra had not perished in the Book. The Ancient Spirits of evil allowed him to return to his crypt, but as punishment for his failure to destroy New Thundera (and for entering the book against the spirit’s orders), Mumm-Ra was ceiled in his coffin, denied of his dark energy and unable to call upon the Ancient Spirits of Evil to take on his ever living form. Trapped in the darkness, Mumm-Ra was forced to sleep and dream of his past failures. The world was not entirely dead to him however. Evil still existed throughout the universe and so even in his comatose state, Mumm-Ra lived and anticipated the day his powers would be restored to him and he could use them to smite his most hated enemy, Lion-O.
A few yards in front of Mumm-Ra’s crypt, a pathetic excuse for a specter hovered over the caldron, continuously scrawling in a thick leather-bound book with his single skeleton hand. The specter peered into the caldron through a hole in the tattered rags that covered his withered, corporeal frame. In the bubbling waters he observed a busy, but peaceful scene taking place around the New Cats lair. He recorded what appeared to him from the caldron to every last detail. As long as his master was incapacitated, it was his duty to keep tabs on his enemies. Mumm-Ra intended to be well prepared when he awoke and sought vengeance on the Thundercats.
Oh what a glorious day that will be…
a/n: Started this fic awhile back. Got writers block, scrapped it, then started this again. But I got some new inspiration after watching “Deadliest Warrior”, so hopefully I can drum up something interesting with this story.
