With Deepground gone, Gaia was finally at peace.
That was all fine and dandy for some people, but for the Turks, well, that meant something else. Their missions weren’t as dangerous and thrilling and exciting as the missions had been in the past; the Turks might as well team up with Cloud Strife because all they ever did these days was to bring so-and-so to this so-and-so and yeah, Reno did believe his boss when Rufus had said that these little packages and folders and discs were important because they carried the plans for a Neo Shin-Ra.
Except, that didn’t make sense.
Which was why Reno was in Rufus’ office in Junon. He had taken a seat and was now staring at his boss inquisitively.
Rufus didn’t notice him, seemingly preoccupied with his paperwork, but when Reno took out a pack of cigarettes and started to light one, Rufus lifted his head and said: “You know the rule, Reno.”
Reno chuckled softly and put his things away. “How else am I going to get your attention? Do I have to stick my tongue down your throat?”
He knew very well that he was stepping into dangerous territory, but he didn’t care because this was a part of his job, his life and Rufus was a part of his life. Rufus was more than his boss and he was sure that Rufus wouldn’t mind a few jokes here and there that alluded to their relationship.
And he was right.
Rufus was smirking now.
“No, but there are other ways of getting my attention besides simply breaking the rules,” Rufus said lightly. “I’m sure you’ve probably noticed how tedious these days are-- with the paperwork and--”
“Are you serious about recreating Shin-Ra?” Reno interrupted. Rufus stared at him for a long moment before he smiled.
“Maybe,” Rufus answered mysteriously. “But that’s why you’re here, right?”
Reno nodded just once and then he watched, wondering what Rufus was doing as Rufus pushed the pile of paperwork to the side of his desk and brought out a brown box. From there, he took out sixteen white and black chess pieces and a chessboard. He placed the box on the ground and started to set up a chess game.
“So, you want me to beat you in a chess game to get a real answer?” Reno asked skeptically, crossing his arms. “What if I don’t want to play?”
“Then you won’t get an answer,” Rufus said with a small smile. “It has been a while, you know.”
“Well yeah,” Reno said with a shrug. “We’ve been doing a lot of boring ass missions these days-- I mean, come on, being delivery boys? That’s Cloud’s job!” He moved his chair up and looked at his side of the chessboard. Black pieces. Rufus was using the white pieces. The colors suited them well. “But I’ll play your game-- if I get something else.”
“I’m not willing to compromise,” Rufus said simply, with his own little grin. “I heard that Tseng taught you how to play this game and you may be able to play it well, but you can’t play on me.”
“But that depends,” Reno said with a soft chuckle, “what kind of play we’re really talking about here. But you’re right that Tseng taught me how to play this. I hated it, but it comes in handy sometimes. The strategy, the timing-- all of it.”
Rufus nodded and moved a white pawn up. “You hated it because he kept beating you.”
Reno snorted and moved up his own black pawn. “Hell yeah. Kinda makes me wonder why you’re playing with me, instead of playing with Tseng. You might beat me with a few moves. Don’t you want a challenge?”
“You’re already a challenge-- as yourself that is,” Rufus answered and this little remark caused Reno to laugh. “If you really wanted to know my true intentions, perhaps you shouldn’t have interrupted me earlier.”
“I think, I’ve pretty much interrupted at the right time,” Reno said and after Rufus finally made his move, Reno pushed up another black pawn. “You’re saying that you’re bored, like us, and to ease that boredom, you’d rather play chess. Why can’t we just have sex?”
“Why can’t you be a bit more discreet?” Rufus asked, shaking his head, but he was still smiling. “No, I think you can be discreet. You just refuse to, because like me, you’re bored and you’d like a little sparkle in your life.”
“Sparkle?” Reno asked in disbelief. “Did you just say sparkle?”
“I suppose having a boss for a lover just isn’t enough for some people,” Rufus said with a mock-sigh. He replaced one of Reno’s pawns with his white one and gazed at Reno thoughtfully.
Reno took the comment seriously. “No, no, it’s just--you’d think, with all the monsters gone, we’d be content with our lives--”
“You know, there are other monsters,” Rufus said with that same sense of mystery. “But, I’d rather not dwell on it. It’s your move.”
Reno frowned and moved up his knight. How did they go from flirting with each other to brooding? “Ya know, I don’t even know why I’m playing with you.”
“To get your answer,” Rufus said for him. “And, by the way, checkmate.”
Reno stared at the chessboard and saw that Rufus was right. The way he had arranged his pawns and the way Rufus had taken just a few of those pawns had created an opening for the king, and with the king all too surrounded by his fellow servants, there wasn’t enough room for him to escape.
But Reno didn’t care, because he realized, that there was another reason why he was really here, just as there was another reason why Rufus had wanted to play chess with him.
He leaned over and pressed his lips against Rufus’ lips.
“Even though you beat me, I still won, ya know,” Reno whispered against that tempting mouth. “I got what I wanted.” He pulled away and he was smirking and he was feeling so smug and good about himself, but Rufus didn’t appear to be all too affected.
“I think we both did,” Rufus said softly. His eyes were gleaming now. “And, by the way, now that I finally got your attention, I should tell you that the door’s locked.”
“Locked?”
Reno placed his hand on the knob and tried to open the door. Rufus was right again. He stood there for a few moments, wondering why it was locked, and then, when it finally came to him, he started laughing. It was planned. All of it was planned-- to lure him in here.
Rufus was never direct.
And Reno was about to turn around, to tell him that, but he froze once again, as he felt slender arms embracing him from the behind. “I thought we were supposed to be discreet.”
“Don’t think about it too much,” Rufus whispered against his back and Reno could feel Rufus’ hands moving all over him now. For the third time, Rufus was right. It had a while. It had been a while since their last talk; it had been a while since they spent time together like this. It seemed as though they still lived in different worlds.
“You should have just given me a vacation,” Reno said as he finally turned around and returned the embrace. “But all that stuff earlier? Foreplay, right?”
Rufus said nothing to that; he merely smiled and pulled Reno into a kiss.
Fin.
