CHAPTER ONE

THE RULES OF THE GAME

|#|#|

IT WAS A TYPICAL DAY IN BAYVILLE. Birds were chirping, people were at work or at school and the weather was perfect – though Rogue had a feeling that a certain Weather Witch might have been using her powers just a little bit. As she walked down the dirt road towards the brotherhood house she kicked a rock and thought about everything that had happened over the course of the past few months – which was nothing.

Since Apocalypse had been defeated, things had been really quiet. There had been no Magneto or Acolyte sightings for nearly a month and Mystique was AWOL. With all this in mind, things had been rather boring around Bayville. Things had been so boring that it was getting to the point she wanted to ask the Brotherhood to cause a bit bigger problem than the last time they had done anything. Professor Xavier, Logan and Ororo Monroe believed that it was best – for now- for her to stay out of active missions until they were sure she was fully ready. It seemed that after everything that had happened over the past few months they thought that she was still slightly unstable.

Because of this she was bored out of her mind. The idea to skip school had come just as the bell rang and she realised that she just didn’t want to put up with the same thing she had been for the past few weeks – teachers keeping an eye on her, her friends treating her like glass and the same pile of homework that she could easily complete. She had simply turned away from the building and started to walk away, ignoring Kurt and Kitty calling her from the entrance of the school. After a couple of minutes walking she decided to go and pay a visit to the Brotherhood. With Mystique AWOL, she didn’t have to worry about talking to the woman who claimed to be her mother, and could relax before heading back to the mansion to deal with the consequences of her playing hookie.

As she got closer to the building Rogue realised something. It was quiet – too quiet. She had just got to the bottom of the stairs, which lead up onto the front porch when she noticed Wanda standing at the door just looking in. Wondering what she was doing, Rogue walked up and stood next to the other Goth and looking into the entrance hallway. After a while Rogue decided to speak up.

‘What exactly are you doing out here?’

Wanda didn’t even look at Rogue; she just continued to look inside the house.

‘It’s too quiet,’ Wanda replied. ‘There should be so much noise I can hear it from down the road. But there is nothing. I don’t know whether to go in and find out that they’ve all been killed by some axe murderer or to go in and kill them myself because they were planning something against me.’

‘Well, would it help if I came in as well?’ Rogue asked.

‘It might discourage them if what’s happening is the later of the two,’ Wanda said and took a cautious step into the house.

There had been no planning like Wanda had thought and no murders either. The brotherhood boys were just lying around looking like they had nothing better to do. The two Goths watched them for a few minutes before anyone said anything.

‘I get the feeling that you lot are bored out of your minds,’ Rogue said as she leant against the wall.

‘That would be putting it mildly,’ Lance replied as he looked up from his guitar. ‘We’re so bored.’

‘Yeah,’ Todd said. ‘Even Pietro can’t find any fun from running around in circles.’

‘I don‘t run around in circles!’ Pietro said.

‘Yo, you run around Bayville. That counts as a circle.’

Wanda just rolled her eyes. ‘Freddy is so bored that he doesn’t even find pleasure in eating,’ Lance mentioned and the Goths looked over at Blob. He was sitting in a chair just looking at the wall.

‘I think the feeling has gone all over Bayville,’ Rogue explained as she went and sat down next to Lance on the couch.

‘Haven’t seen you on any missions lately,’ Lance said looking at her.

‘The reason why I’m bored. I’m still deemed fragile!’

‘Idiots,’ Wanda said and sat down next to Rogue.

‘Man, I need to do something!’ Lance said. ‘Causing trouble around Bayville isn’t as much fun at the moment.’

‘Yeah, ever since Apocalypse, everything seems boring,’ Freddy said.

‘Not even going against the X-men is fun anymore,’ Pietro said.

‘We need something that is going to spice things up,’ Rogue said and they all looked at her.

‘Any ideas?’ Todd asked.

‘Now that you mention it,’ Rogue said. ‘Before I came to Bayville, I used to go and see my Cousins during Spring Break and we’d always play this game for the duration. It helped combat the boredom and kept my ‘Aunt’ and ‘Uncle’ on their toes.’

‘What’s it called?’ Wanda asked.

‘Things to do when you’re bored.’

‘Original!’ Wanda said.

‘Well you can’t call it any other name because each spring we’d change the rules, it would defeat the purpose if we did the same things over and over again.’

‘So how do you play?’ Lance asked.

‘At the beginning of the game the players come up with a list of rules. Each rule is basically a task and each task is worth a certain number of points. You can double the points for that certain task if under certain circumstances. There is only one exception and that is that the tasks cannot be done on a member playing the game. Also no one is to mention the game to anyone outside of the game. It just screws with the whole thing,’ Rogue explained.

‘Sounds interesting,’ Pietro said, stroking an imaginary beard.

‘Sounds like fun,’ Todd said. ‘I’m in.

A chorus of me too’s went up – except for Wanda who just nodded.

‘Ok, now comes the fun bit. We make up the rules,’ Rogue said and pulled out a book from her bag and a pen. The next few hours were taken up with making suggestions for rules. Some were shot down because they were deemed too gross (Todd’s idea of kissing girls randomly was shot down by not only Rogue and Wanda but the other Brotherhood boys as well). By the time the clock struck three a list had been made. Clearing his throat, Lance stood up.

‘Ladies and gentlemen. The following is a list of things that we all agree on as the tasks that a person can do throughout the course of the game. They are as follows:’ and he began to read them out.

‘Are there any last minute mentions?’ Lance asked and everyone shook their head. ‘Then the tasks have been set.’

‘Ok, from the moment that the game begins – midnight tonight – we are not to tell anyone what we are doing. No matter who gangs up on us. It is to stay between all of us,’ Rogue said and everyone agreed. ‘The game will go for a period of two weeks. At the end of the first week we will meet here and check the scores. At the end of the second week the final tally will be taken and the winner will be proclaimed.’

‘Should there be a prize?’ Todd asked.

‘That’s a good point,’ Freddy said and Rogue looked at the others.

‘What would it be?’ Wanda asked.

‘How about an object that the winner wants the most. There is a price limit though,’ Pietro said. ‘Each of the losers will hand over twenty bucks for the winner to spend.’

‘It’s a good prize,’ Lance said.

‘I agree,’ Freddy said.

‘Here, here,’ Todd said. Wanda once again nodded.

‘Ok,’ Rogue said smiling. ‘Let the games begin!’
