"You don't want to go in there." Was the first comment that met Kakashi's ears as he made his way to the Anbu records room.
"Eh?" He asked, his Anbu mask still on the side of his head. He never bothered to tell his workmates why he refused to wear his Anbu mask properly. He found it more amusing to let them come up with their own theories. Some reckoned he simply didn't like the mask. Some thought he did it just to be annoying. Kakashi personally thought a disregard to how things were supposed to be done would be a good tribute to Obito.
"Well, uh, it's just the new guy's in there just now." The Anbu replied.
"And?" Kakashi asked.
"It's Itachi." The Anbu told Kakashi, as though he'd forgotten. Kakashi gave him a lazy, disinterested look. "Uchiha." The Anbu added pointedly.
"Yes. I know who he is." Kakashi replied boredly.
"But what about--" The Anbu began.
Kakashi didn't bother to hear him out. "I can deal with it." He murmured before opening the door and entering calmly. He wasn't afraid of the Uchiha's and quite frankly he didn't give a damn about their opinion of him. He had a mission report to fill in and he wasn't going to have a to do list before resting after an S class mission. He wasn't surprised though by their concern. It was no secret that the Uchihas thought little of Kakashi after he'd "stolen" the Sharingan from one of their clan. Kakashi snorted in amusement, lightly.
The sound, though quiet, was enough to catch the thirteen-year-old's attention. Itachi looked up from the report he was writing. "Something amusing?" He asked boredly.
"Not really." Kakashi answered, taking a blank mission report form and sitting across the table from Itachi. Mission reports never left the room. They were filled in, and filed on the spot. Only Anbu and the Hokage were permitted to enter. Less chance of a leak in information that way.
Itachi quirked an eyebrow. "So you laugh at something that doesn't amuse you?" He asked. Kakashi answered with a mere shrug as he got on with his report. Itachi turned back to his own report. "I heard you're good at your job." He commented idly. He had several missions to organise teams for in the coming weaks. Getting an idea on the backgrounds of who'd be on the missions would be an advantage.
Kakashi stopped writing and looked up. "Aren't you going to ask me how, or why I stole the Sharingan?"
"You're not a medical ninja. I've seen your file. To perform the transplant you'd need medical ninjutsu. Therefore it wouldn't be a solo act. I also know you were thirteen at the time, your team-mates being the same age, and the medical ninja of your team was a girl with little tolerance for fighting amongst members." Itachi stated.
"Hm." Kakashi turned back to his report. "Did your homework. Didnt you."
"I also know that the accusations are made for a feeling of insult in my clan." Itachi added blandly. "And by the way, you're five hours and fourty seven minutes late from your mission." He remarked after scanning the paper that was upside down to him.
"Yeah. I know." Kakashi replied, unfazed. "You see, I was on my way back when I met this old lady, who was looking for her pet cat. So I decided to help her find it."
"I find that hard to believe." Itachi stated. "Why would it take so long for an Anbu to find a cat?"
"Well you see, I summon dogs, which I've raised myself. So obviously I smell of dog. Which scared the cat, making it harder to capture." Kakashi explained happily.
Itachi shook his head. "If the cat was scared, provided it even existed outside your imagination, it would have scratched you. Yet there are no such marks on you. Your scratches were inflicted by kunai and shuriken. It's not a plausible excuse."
"Well, I could tell you where I was, but Id have to kill you." Kakashi stated lightly. He was impressed, however, at the boys knowledge. He certainly knew his stuff.
"You're a liar." Itachi said bluntly.
Kakashi laughed, filling in the last of his report, shorter than Itachi's as it was for a solo mission, and left the room in good spirits. The irony was certainly not lost to him that the situation was reversed. Instead of him getting irritated at an Uchiha for a bogus excuse for tardiness, it was and Uchiha getting irritated at him.
A fitting tribute to Obito indeed.
Itachi, meanwhile, returned to his own report. The lie was ridiculous. If he was going to lie about helping an old lady, why couldn't he make it plausible. Something like she was lost and he escorted her home. Or some other simple thing that could take that length of time without him getting hurt.
But at the same time, Kakashi had sounded very convincing when he spoke. Too bad for him he didnt have any visible evidence, or Itachi might have believed him... just a little.
Author Note: Well there it is, my first Naruto fanfic I've completed. (Crossovers done with friends don't count.) This was just a little drabble I came up with last night. This was the result of a discussion with two people. I don't know any official information, but I don't think the Uchihas, in general, would think much of Kakashi, using their Kekkei Genkai but not being one of them. My brother agreed, and so I mentioned it to my best friend, who knows way more than I do about Naruto. She said it was possible because Itachi and Fugaku didn't agree much. From Itachi's mannerism towards Kakashi, it's obvious there is some level of respect. So here we are.
