Prologue

Amity Park, 2004

The year was two thousand four (2004). Dark, gray clouds covered the sky of Amity Park. It was the weekend, and the students were free to roam the town.

Daniel Fenton, the son of Jack and Maddie Fenton and brother of Jazz Fenton, walked on the sidewalks, his hands in his pockets and his head hanging low. He’d only just walked out of his house after being in a fight with his sister. It was over ghostly matters, and with reason, he suspected Jazz to have revealed his other half to his parents.

For what reason, Danny, am I the suspect here? I gave you my word!” Jazz shouted at him.

He didn’t answer her question. “Then how did mom and dad find out? I’ve spent months, Jazz, months keeping this a secret from them! And then I come home and…”

Danny-”

Forget it, Jazz,” he walked away from her, heading for the front door. Without a backward glance, he changed into his phantom form, “I’m going out. If anyone asks, I’m out and about town. Have them call for Danny Phantom.”

And he left it at that. After taking flight, he flew around town for awhile before landing in the street, becoming human once again. Flying helped him calm down and walking helped him relax.

He continued walking until he came upon the park. Once there, he searched the area for a bench and sat down. With a sigh of exhaustion, he bent down, his head between his legs and arms covering his face.

Why did I have to act like an idiot? He thought. She was probably telling the truth, and I overreacted.

“Good going, Fenton,” he spoke to himself. “You have no proof it was even Jazz in the first place. I guess I should apologize.”

He sat up just as the wind speed began to pick up. His hair whipped his face. Then, without any warning, it started to rain.

Danny looked up at the sky. “Great,” he said, “now I get to walk home in the rain.”

Suddenly, a large gust of wind attacked him, sending him hurdling to the ground. He tried to get back up, but another gust knocked him back into a tree. Danny felt a sudden rush of pain in his back, and then he fell.

He hit the ground with such force that within an instant, blackness enveloped him. It wasn’t until moments later he recovered from the blow. The pain in his back throbbed, but he quickly noticed that his left side also throbbed with pain.

With a moan, he flipped over to his right side to examine the left. He didn’t have to go far before he saw that the grass was covered in his blood. Danny let out a cry of agony and clutched his wound.

For whatever reason, though, he dropped his arm instantly. Off to his left, his attention was caught by a single, shiny object. Careful not to stand up, he made his way over to the item. He noticed that, as he got closer, he could see that it was round and gold.

An amulet.

Terrified, he backed away. The last amulet he encountered was associated with evil and ghosts - the Amulet of Aragon. From experience, he knew that amulets were a source of danger.

This one, though, didn’t look anything like Aragon’s. He crept forward once again, grasping the amulet for closer examination.

No. It wasn’t like Aragon’s, or Clockwork’s for that matter. But for all he knew, it could be an ordinary amulet some lady lost in the park.

I should take it home, he thought. Whether it’s normal or not, I can’t leave it out here.

Then without another thought, he transformed into his ghostly alter ego and immediately left the park. The rain beat down on him, but the wind remained tame. For that, he was thankful. Of course, he wouldn’t mind if it wasn’t raining either.

He reached his home shortly and disappeared through the walls into his room. From there, he shifted back into his human form and collapsed on the bed. The amulet he held on to as he drifted into sleep. There was no chance he would let it escape his possession.

The next morning the sound of an alarm awoke Danny. Laying on his stomach, his face buried in his pillow, he moan. His left side and back still ached, but it numbed down a little after he returned home.

Reaching over to turn off his alarm clock, he felt a jabbing pain in his left arm. He retracted his arm and held it close to his body. Something wasn’t right.

And… He never turned his alarm on in the first place. So where was that noise coming from?

“Danny Fenton,” he heard his name being called from outside, “or better yet, Danny Phantom come out with your hands up!”

Rising from bed, he walked over to the window. Below him was an entire police army surrounding his home. The police chief beckoned to him, a gun in his hand.

“We have you surrounded. If you try to escape, you will be caught.”

He backed away from the window unsure of what to do.

“Danny?” he heard his sister’s voice from behind. He turned and saw her.

“Jazz, what’s going on?”

She grabbed his arm, yanking him out of his room. “Whoever told mom and dad your secret has obviously told the entire town.”

“No kidding,” he joked.

“There’s no time for jokes, Danny. You have to leave. Now.”

“But I don’t understand. I-”

“Of course you don’t, Daniel,” a cold, familiar voice caught the siblings’ attention. Danny turned to face his enemy, terrified. “I never expected you to understand.”

“Vlad!” Danny shouted.

His grinned frightened Danny more so than it usually would. The older hybrid wasn’t only more experienced, but much more powerful.

Much more powerful.

“The amulet! But how?”

“I thank you so much for acquiring it, my boy.”

“Plasmius, explain!”

The hybrid’s grin grew larger. “I would gladly, Daniel. You see, this amulet is a prized possession. It can perform many wondrous things. In fact, take a look for yourself.”

Jazz and Danny backed away from the man. He implied something had only recently happened to distract them. With his sister keeping a watchful eye on Vlad, Danny went over to the window.

He stared in shock and shook his head, “No. It can’t be.”

“But it is, Daniel. This amulet can make anything happen. With rules, of course. You see, it’s called the Alternative History and Reality Amulet for a reason. The wearer, me, is given a choice to change either history or reality. I chose reality. You live in my world now, Fenton. Welcome to a new reality.”

Danny stared at his enemy with a newfound hatred. This was going too far.

“Now, Daniel, don’t look at me like that. I’m giving you and your sister a choice - reign with me and you shall be spared, or resist me and you shall be killed. I, personally, would select the first option.”

“No,” was Danny’s immediate answer. “I will not, I will never, reign with you. You’re asking me to abandon my morals to save my own life. What kind of person do you think I am, Plasmius? Certainly, I am not like you.”

“Oh, Daniel, we are more alike than you’ll ever know.”

Before Vlad could react, Danny shot him with an ecto-blast. This gave Danny and Jazz a quick escape.

As they left the room, they could hear Vlad shouting. “You can run, Daniel, but you cannot hide. This world shall never be safe for you again. I will find you wherever you may go.”

“Ignore him,” Jazz said, pulling her brother with her. They were close to reaching the front door.

However, a large explosion prevented them from escaping. Danny tripped over his own feet, bringing his sister down with him.

“They must be planning to blow this place up,” Danny said.

“Then we have to get out now.”

Another explosion shook the house. Debris from the ceiling toppled down on them. “I can phase you out, Jazz.”

“What?”

“Vlad wants me, not you. I can save you, but you must promise to not come back.”

“You’re mad!”

“No,” he said then grabbed her, “I’m doing what I think is best… For the both of us.”

The building began to collapse around them, giving Danny little time to transform. Using all his strength, he gave his sister an invisible and intangible shield then pushed out the door.

“Danny!” she shouted.

He looked up at the falling structure. With whatever remaining energy left, he conjured up another shield just as the building landed on top of him.

Outside, Jazz watched in horror as her home collapsed with her only brother still inside.

Danny!
