Chapter 7 - Epilogue
"Aunt Kahlan!" screamed an overexcited teenager as she threw herself into the older woman's arms. "Uncle Richard!" she jumped at him and Richard expertly caught her, making it apparent that her had done this many times before. "Uncle Zedd!' she turned to the older man beside them and leapt into his arms as well. Richard and Kahlan smiled at their goddaughter and godson who walked up behind her.
Both Bronwyn and Gryff were shocked when they discovered they were having twins. However neither would trade them for anything. Bronwyn and Gryff decided to name them Kahlan and Richard after their best friends who they had also declared godparents. The twins were the spitting image of their parents except for their eyes. Kahlan had Gryff's and Richard had Bronwyn's. Richard was an expert swordsman like his father and god-father before him. He could best anyone he faced, although he had yet to best the Seeker. Kahlan grew up free spirited. She loved riding her horse through the meadows by the water falls and her parents refused to confine her to whatever society dictated was 'appropriate' for a girl. Both children ended up causing their parents lost of grief as they both had a knack for finding trouble.
When they turned five what remained of the D'Harans, those who had eluded capture, gathered together to gain revenge for Darken Rahl. Knowing they would have a hard time getting to the Seeker and Confessor, they went after the two people who had aided in their leader's capture hoping to lure Richard and Kahlan out into the open. When they learned that Bronwyn and Gryff had children, they thought it perfect to get revenge on all four by killing them. As they had no army, and as Richard, Kahlan and Zedd were not close at hand, Bronwyn and Gryff pleaded with the neighbouring families for help. However their neighbours saw no benefit in entering a battle with the D'Harans and refused unless they agreed to betroth Richard and Kahlan to their son and daughter.
Bronwyn and Gryff immediately saw the parallels with their own betrothal. The power their neighbours would get by being connected all the biggest estate in the area as well as the knowledge that they were tied to the Seeker and Confessor would be overwhelming for them. It was the hardest decision Bronwyn and Gryff ever had to make. Binding their children to someone before they even understand what was happening. Although unless they wanted to lose their children, they didn't have much of a choice. They knew not all arranged marriages ended up like theirs, and they could only hope that their children would find love.
Bronwyn and Gryff never told Richard and Kahlan of their decision until shortly after the children turned fourteen. The news had sparked the family's first real argument with lots of shouting from Gryff and Richard and tears from Bronwyn and Kahlan. In the end their parents had told them about the attempt on their life, a fact they did not wish their children to know of, and that they had exhausted all other options to keep them alive, but stood firm in their decision that marriage was better then death. Richard and Kahlan resigned themselves to their fates but refused to marry a stranger. After many visits and talks with their betrothed, the twins seemed content if nothing else.
Richard's wedding was held shortly after his seventeenth birthday and to everyone's surprise two months later, his wife announced she was pregnant. Richard fell out of this chair upon hearing the news, a story his sister never grew tired of telling, and ended up spending the rest of the day comforting his wife after she ran out in a fit of tears thinking he didn't want the child. Kahlan's wedding was planned four months after Richard's, and was now only a few days away.
"Richard come give your aunt a hug." Richard smiled and complied with her wishes. His uncle then pulled his namesake into a one arm embrace, a custom started when Richard declared he was too old for hugs. Something which his aunt and mother refused to believe.
"How's Seanna?" asked Kahlan, referring to Richard's wife.
"Fed up. She's tired of being sick all the time."
"You would be to if you were pregnant." Grumbled a voice from behind. Richard turned around and pulled his wife close to him, a smile plastered on his face.
"Seanna you remember my aunt and uncle don't you?" she nodded.
"Who could forget the Seeker and Confessor?"
"Oh please." Sighed Kahlan. "We're Richard and Kahlan to you."
"And Seeker and Confessor to the man about to marry my goddaughter." Said Richard looking around. "So where is the unfortunate fellow?"
"Uncle Richard be nice!" Richard pointed to himself and gave her a look as if to saw 'me mean? Never!' Zedd shook his head as Kahlan rolled her eyes and opened her mouth to retort, but was interrupted by the sound of running footsteps.
"Aunt Kahlan! Uncle Richard! Uncle Zedd!" screamed two boys as they hurled themselves at them.
"Thomas! Michael!" exclaimed Richard as he picked up his six year old nephew while Zedd pulled his godson, Thomas, who was eleven, into a hug.
"You two have grown so much!" The boys rolled their eyes.
"You only saw us four months ago."
"But you've still grown." Insisted Kahlan.
"Auntie Kahlan, uncle Richard, uncle Zedd." Said a small voice.
"Isabella!" Kahlan bent down and picked up the child who had obviously tried to keep up with her brothers.
"You're growing as fast as your brothers."
"Well I am three."
"Yes you are." Richard said handing Michael to Zedd and taking Isabella.
"Well look who finally decided to show up. Weren't you supposed to be here yesterday?" asked Gryff coming out of the gardens carrying their sixth and last child Rebecca who was only eight months. Over the last seventeen years Bronwyn and Gryff had developed their own mass of children, each one determined to cause more chaos and havoc then the last. After Michael was born they swore that four was enough but two years later Isabella was born. Neither one of them expected Rebecca, but they couldn't be happier. They were just thankful that there was a big enough gaps between kids that the twins were able to help out once Michael came along. Now at thirty-five and thirty-seven they were already to become grandparents.
Unlike them Zedd had never met a special someone and in his advancing age, his own words, he decided to go it alone. None of them believed it for one minute. Zedd kept disappearing for weeks at a time and they were all convinced that he had someone, somewhere. The fact that a woman's dress was found by Kahlan in his hut only confirmed their suspicions. Except for the occasional tease, none of them ever spoke of it. Zedd had yet to confide in them and they respected his privacy. When and if he was ready, they'd welcome her with open arms. While Bronwyn felt sad that Zedd either didn't want to, or couldn't, have his relationship in the open, she also felt sad for Richard and Kahlan who had no children of their own. Sure they doted on their nieces and nephews, but it still wasn't the same, and Bronwyn knew Kahlan wanted kids of her own. The only problem was that Kahlan would have to confess Richard for that to happen. Richard didn't care if she had to confess him. He spent the better part of the two years trying to convince her it didn't matter, while she looked for other options. In the end, Kahlan learned that if Richard used the power of Orden, then he'd be immune to the Confessor's power. They had been married shortly after but had yet to have any children. Bronwyn knew that this troubled Kahlan, as she wondered if there was something wrong with her.
"It's so good to see you." Said Bronwyn walking over to Kahlan and embracing her. Bronwyn stepped back and took a good look at Kahlan before breaking into a bright smile.
"How long?" she squealed. Kahlan laughed.
"I should have known I couldn't hide it from you."
"Did you want to? I'm sorry I-"
"No, it's not that. I just haven't said anything yet." Bronwyn nodded understandingly.
"Do you have any idea what they're talking about?" asked Richard who had traded Isabella for Rebecca. Kahlan looked at him, smiled at Bronwyn then took Rebecca out of his hands.
"I'm pregnant." She said. Kahlan watched with great satisfaction as her husband fell to the ground then quickly got up and twirled her around just as Bronwyn rescued her daughter.
"Seriously?" he asked smiling widely. Kahlan nodded and Richard leapt into the air and cried out in joy. The whole family laughed at his antics but couldn't be happier for them. The celebrating family turned in the direction of the gates as they opened and a young man rode in.
"What did I miss?" he asked as he dismounted. Kahlan smiled and ran over to him, jumping into his arms. Richard's smile faded seeing this man holding his niece closely. He looked over at Gryff and his eldest nephew whose faces mirrored his own.
"You have no idea how glad I am Isabella and Rebecca are to young to even thing about that." When they didn't pull apart and their lips started seeking each others Richard stepped in.
"Hey!" he shouted pulling out the Sword of Truth. They pulled apart and the man backed away in fear when he realized who was advancing on him. Kahlan rolled her eyes and stepped between them.
"Uncle Richard please don't kill my fiancée." Richard grudgingly put the Sword away seeing the look in her eyes that she had inherited from Bronwyn and Kahlan. The look that said he would lose…and badly. Richard held out his hand.
"I'm Richard Cypher, the Seeker, and Kahlan's protective uncle." The man took his hand, still looking terrified.
"I'm Robert Matthews, the man who will keep his hands to himself for the next few days." Kahlan rolled her eyes again while Richard nodded approvingly. Kahlan chose that moment to slap her husband upside the head.
"What was that for?" she glared at him.
"Isn't scaring the boy Gryff's job?"
"Oh he's tried." Said Bronwyn. "He just hasn't had any luck."
"Hey! I can be very intimidating!" insisted Gryff to which Bronwyn just patted him on the back. Kahlan laughed then turned to Robert.
"I'm Kahlan Cypher, the Confessor." She held out her hand but he hesitated. Kahlan understood what he was thinking.
"I don't confess people by a simple handshake." She assured him and he took her hand.
"And I'm Zeddicus Zu'l Zorander. But you can call me Zedd." Robert shook his hand as well.
"And you can call me Seeker." Said Richard warningly. Robert's eyes widened a little but he felt Kahlan wrap her arms around him reassuringly. He looked at Richard and saw the tension, but as he wasn't reaching for the Sword, he took it as a good sign.
Things seemed to go smoothly after that. Robert still got glares from Gryff and both Richards, but their wives kept them in check. Three days later the wedding took place without a glitch. Everything was finally falling into place. The only crisis the family faced, or rather the only crisis, Gryff and the Richards faced, was that three month after the wedding Kahlan announced she was pregnant. Robert feared for his life that day. A few months later Seanna gave birth to a healthy baby girl named Jessica. Kahlan followed with a son who they named Christopher. Kahlan was worried for her son's life as all male offspring of the Confessors are supposed to be put to death, but Richard assured her that if anyone came near Christopher with murderous intentions, they would die and slower and more painful death then Darken Rahl. And finally Robert and Kahlan's son William was born, a few months later. Everyone was at peace, happily raising their troublesome children and no one could ask for more.
A/N - Well there you have it. They live happily ever after...well sort of. They've got kids to raise and that's always a challenge in itself. Don't ask why I made Richard and Kahlan have an arranged marriage like their parents, it's simply because the idea came to me and stuck with me...I don't know why.
Those of you reading Life Changes, I'm sorry for the delay, I know it's been way to long since I've updated, but as I've said life's been hectic. I don't know when I'll get the next chapter up, I'm working on it in what little spare time I have. The whole idea of summer, and lots of free time to write...yeah it didn't happen this summer. Sorry.
Review please!!
