Whether they be sad or blissful memories,
It’s better than having none.

Groaning a little bit, I pulled myself up as I rubbed my eyes, hoping to get a clearer vision when I open them. I turned to look at the clock at my bedside table. Why is it I wake up earlier than the alarm during the first day of school and the following days I smash it and wake up an hour later?

I yawned as I switched the alarm off, smiling to myself as I headed to the bathroom to wash my face. Today’s gonna be a great day—my first day in high school as a freshman and best of all, Hotaru and I are going to the same school!

It’s the first time we’ll be schoolmates. We’ve met when we were just eight and that was at Central Town’s Park. We were studying in different schools up until now so I’m really excited! I guess that must have been the reason why I managed to wake up early today. I can’t wait to see her—my dream of me and my best friend in the same school has come true!

“Mikan,”

I sure do hope we’ll be classmates. Well, even if we’re not, we could still go to the cafeteria and eat together during lunch. Oh, I should brush up my baking skills and prepare dessert for the two of us everyday!

“Mikan,”

I wonder if we could walk together to and from school too! Although we’ll separate when we reach the train station, we’ll still get to be together for quite some time and that would be so much fun!

“Mikan,”

The school festivals will be a great bonding opportunity too. We’ll go to stalls together, eat together, watch performances together, and maybe we could audition for a play or something. I barely passed the entrance exam, but I’m glad I still got in. Oh yeah, maybe before exams, I could go to Hotaru’s house and she’ll hel—

“YUKIHIRA MIKAN!”

I flinched and turned my head around, only to find my dearest mother panting by the door with an annoyed look directed at me. “Sorry, I was daydreaming.”

She calmed down and looked at me skeptically. “Do you want to bathe first before eating breakfast?”

A question mark appeared on top of my head. “Etou, don’t I always get breakfast first so I wouldn’t have to return to the bathroom to brush my teeth?” It’s my usual routine, and even if the thought of being schoolmates with Hotaru excites me, I don’t think I could change that so why would she ask something like

“Then could you please turn off the faucet? Water bills aren’t cheap nowadays, my dear.” I don’t know if she did it on purpose but at the exact time she finished her sentenced, the water overflowed and wetted my pajamas. Great.

I immediately turned around and turned the faucet off, pulling out the rubber that blocked the sink’s plumb hole or something to drain and stop the water. I heaved a sigh of relief when the water disappeared. Although it doesn’t change the fact that my pajamas are soaked. I quickly changed to a pair of shorts I found in the laundry basket—if I took out one from my closet, it’d add to my laundry work later and I wouldn’t want that.

I headed to kitchen, stretching as I went. Mom was already there, spreading butter on two tasty breads before she inserted them in the toaster. I smiled as I prepared to make breakfast. It was always like this. Mom would prepare our bento since she wakes up extra early, and I make us a simple but satisfying breakfast so she wouldn’t be more troubled than she already is. Besides, it’s a nice way to bond with each other.

“Did you come by my room to wake me earlier?” I was kinda surprised that she was there. I thought she’d still be here in the kitchen, or if anything, still asleep.

“Waking you up is a task I’m unable to do without a baseball bat, Mikan.” I frowned. Unlike most mothers out there, she’s the type who doesn’t hesitate in smacking their children.

“I went back to my room to get those Graham crackers I bought last night which were in my bag. I was so tired that it slipped out of my mind. It’s a good thing they didn’t get crunched or anything. I heard the water running and thought you’d be awake so I went in to greet you but you had this goofy smile plastered on your face. Thinking of Hotaru again, weren’t you?”

I sweatdropped for a moment—mom knows me too well—and then I smiled wider and nodded, setting aside the goofy compliment. Hotaru is my best friend after all and we’ll be going to the same school for the first time—of course I’m super duper excited!

“You’re never gonna find a boyfriend if this keeps up. Be more sociable, will you?” I sweatdropped and got back to our breakfast. Seeing as though they were ready, I turned off the stove and lifted the pan, sliding the eggs on the plate I had prepared by the side. I put the platter on the counter. I heard the toaster ‘click’ and grabbed another plate, placing the pair of toasted butter bread on it to let it cool off.

I took another pair of tasty bread and spread butter on it. After placing them in the toaster, I went to get our mugs and prepare our drinks. We weren’t the type who likes coffee, so our morning drinks include hot chocolate milk and…well, just hot chocolate milk. We have it at night too, before we go to sleep. My family has a healthy bloodline, and we’d like to keep it that way. Besides, I don’t like the bitterness of caffeine products.

“Alice Academy’s the place where you met dad, right?” She’s the one who brought up the topic of boyfriends. One of the reasons why I wanted to go there was dad. I wanted to see the place where my parents met.

She hummed a ‘yes’ and added, “You’ll definitely love the place, dear—and while we’re on the topic,” I twitched. It was easy to tell she didn’t want to repeat the whole story again, but the topic of my loveless life wasn’t something I was really comfortable about. “Well, rushing isn’t good but you should at least start dating. You’re in high school now, after all.”

I placed both of our mugs on the counter, careful not to slip. “But boys are impossible, mom. Most of them are playboys and I don’t think I can handle it. I don’t want to date random guys either.” Hearing the toaster click again, I took another plate and placed the new pair of toasted butter bread on it.

I took the plate with our eggs and slid one for each plate with toasted butter bread. I then pulled out our bamboo tray and placed our meals there along with two pairs of chopsticks in case of need. I took them to the dining room and began arranging them.

“I won’t push, but if someone asks you out, you ought to give it a try. Be more open—you’ve secluded yourself in middle school.” I grunted. My years in middle school were only satisfying because I didn’t let myself get involved with anyone. The people there weren’t really friendly. It’s one of the reasons why I always went over to Hotaru’s place on the weekends.

I looked at the table—everything was set. This is the simplest breakfast I’ve done in a long while. “Done!” I saw my mom closing our bentos, indicating that she was done with her work. I fixed my seating position and as soon as my mom and I were face-to-face, I clasped my hands and we both said, “Itadakimasu!” and began eating.

Well, there really wasn’t much to be eaten but we were slow eaters, so I guess this is enough. Besides, I could always make more toasted butter bread and eggs if there’s a need.

“You’re the only one I know that’s going to Alice Academy. Do you have any middle school acquaintances going there as well?” I shook my head, chunking up the bread in my mouth before I chewed and swallowed it. “I don’t know,” I muttered, continuing to eat. The only person I ever wanted to be with was Hotaru.

I heard mom let out a sigh. “Hotaru’s been the apple of your eye ever since you met her. I’d be devastated if you don’t make other friends at the academy.” I sweatdropped. I bet she added to herself something like, “She better do or I’ll start setting her up with blind dates.”

I sighed. “Weren’t you friendless at the start too?” This is my mom, after all. The stories she told me when I was a child are still clear and she’s been repeating them again and again during my years in middle school.

“Well, I can’t deny that…I kept to myself until I met your father.” I smiled, seeing her cheeks heat up and hearing her voice going all shy and mushy showed how strong her love for dad was even until now. On the other hand though, I find it weird that a middle-aged woman is acting like a love-struck school girl.

“I’m done,” I suddenly realized the fried-egg-sandwich I made was no longer in my hands. I wonder if it’s weird to have fried egg on toasted butter bread. Well, it tasted delicious altogether so either way, it’s a well-done concoction.

I drank what’s left of my hot chocolate milk before I placed my plates on the tray and transferred them to the sink. Soon, my mom was beside me. “I’ll do the dishes today. You may want extra time to groom yourself.”

I simply nodded and hopped off to the bathroom in my bedroom. I want to look extra special today. Aside from wanting to make a good first impression with my classmates, I want to at least look presentable enough when I’m with Hotaru. She’s really pretty, and I don’t want to demote her good looks with my average face.

I took off my clothes and stepped into the warm shower. I did the usual practice, although I applied a bit more today—I wanted to smell extra fragrant today. My image in middle school was kind of dull, and I want to change that in Alice Academy. I want to make as much memories as possible. Life is short, after all.

I wrapped myself in my bathrobe, and then dried my feet off with the bee-themed rug placed before the door, slipping them in my furry white slippers. I was about to go to the closet when two knocks sounded through my door and mom came in the room. She was fast with the dishes…unless she was too excited and left some of it undone. My mom just adored dressing me up.

“How’d you want your hair?” I sweatdropped. Straight to the point, huh? I laughed nervously, sighing at the back of my mind. Yep, my mom simply adores dressing me up.

I took one last look at the mirror before I flew off. Mom did it simpler than I thought. Two small partly pigtails at each side styled in thread-locks, fixed with a red ribbon. Well, at least she didn’t pull it to a half-bun and used that huge ribbon. Just in case I’ll get sweaty, I prepared a brush and a couple of scrunchies. I don’t really like letting my hair down, but I guess it’s fine for today.

One thing’s for sure—my new uniform is cute to the core! A white blouse on the inside with a golden ribbon tied underneath the collar, a soft dark brown blazer on top and the golden checkered skirt all together look absolutely adorable. I can’t wait to see Hotaru in this outfit. I bet her purple-black features would compliment the uniform very nicel—

“Mikan, you’ll be late!” Oops. I grabbed my satchel and scurried downstairs. Mom was at the doorway, a somewhat skeptical smile on her face. “If you run there, you’ll get sweaty and all that time grooming you will be wasted. Are you sure you don’t want me to accompany you there? It’s not exactly a normal school. You’ll be too amazed and distracted that once the bell rings, you find yourself lost and late.”

I sweatdropped. It’s either she knows me too well or she experienced that herself. Well, as long as I see Hotaru, I won’t get lost. I slipped out of my slippers and put on the knee-high chocolate brown boots, hiding the black socks underneath. I don’t know if we have to change our footwear when we get there—it’s my first time encountering a school that used boots. The designer must really have an eye for originality.

I stood up and dusted my skirt. Mom handed me my satchel and I kissed her on the cheek. “I’ll be going now. Ja!” I heard her reply,“Have a safe trip!” before I got outside of the house. I strode off, unlocking the small steel gate that was in-between the cemented boundary. After I got out, I locked it again—not really secure but mom would tighten it later when she leaves for work.

I turned my heels and headed for the train station. I still remember the directions mom told me yesterday, but just in case, I listed it down and placed the small memo in my pocket. The school was somewhat prestigious, she said, and even if it is kind of known, it’d be hard finding it. I just hope I won’t get lost before I even get there.

I turned left, pausing for a while when I saw two girls giggling. They were wearing the high school uniform from Satsuki Gakuen, the same school I went to for middle school. I haven’t really memorized my classmates’ names, but I’m pretty sure we were in the same class. One of them caught a glance on me, turning back to her friend almost immediately when our eyes met.

I didn’t bother lending my ears to what they were saying after that. Middle school was a drag—I could care less about what they say about me now. I continued to walk, probably ten yards behind them. It wasn’t long before they turned to a different direction, most likely picking up another member of their group.

I sighed, soon nearing the train station, ignoring what just happened the last few minutes. I then smiled to myself—in just a few minutes, I’ll be able to see Hotaru! I began skipping my way merrily to the said station, not caring if anyone found me weird. I’ll be able to see Hotaru in the cutest uniform I’ve ever seen, be schoolmates with her, and hopefully be classmates with her!

This’ll be one of the best days in my life and I’m not letting anything ruin it.

My eyes widened along with my lips, and I’m pretty sure I’m hyperventilating—whatever that is—right now. I lunged myself, throwing my arms out, open and prepared to hug my dearest, loving best friend, “!!!”

SWAT!

I cried, not really enjoying the feeling of having been hit with another of Hotaru’s crazy inventions and landing on the oak tree near by. It hurt, but I’m more overjoyed at the sight of seeing my beloved Hotaru in the school grounds!

“Make another attempt and you won’t be just hitting that tree.” I stopped in my tracks, realizing I was three feet away and my body was in the same position I had earlier. “But I haven’t hugged you in a long while!” If it weren’t for her inventions, I would’ve had the ability to hug her before getting hurt!

“Please?” I pleaded with my puppy eyes, knowing it was my only weapon in convincing Hotaru. I would’ve added more ‘pleases’, but I know that if I did, my chances would just lower down.

The moment she sighed and smiled—I just love it when she smiles!—I lunged to hug her. I was careful not to squeeze her or else she’d have my head. After a minute, I let go but still held her hands, and smiled at her. “I’m so happy we’re schoolmates!”

“I’m not.” I ignored that. Hotaru will always be Hotaru. “You look so cute!” I commented. I was right about Hotaru’s features complimenting the school uniform. Well, she’d look great on anything—she came from beautiful parents, after all.

I heard her sigh and we soon began walking to the big building. I scanned the place as we did. I didn’t notice how huge the place was since my eyes first spotted Hotaru. Now that I look at it, I wonder how mom was able to afford the tuition fee for this place. There’re trees everywhere, and aside from the tiled path walk, the Bermuda grass is spread in almost every corner too.

It wasn’t long till we reached the main building. There was this really beautiful fountain and in front of it was a huge stone plaque with the name of the school on it. There were students everywhere, probably hanging out before the opening ceremony or meeting with old friends.

Sugoi…” was all I could mutter. Aside from being with Hotaru, wearing cute uniforms, the academy I’m now studying in is incredible! This day is getting better and better. Who knows? Maybe God would even make Hotaru and me classmates! Well, that’s too much to ask, but it’s the only thing I asked for in the beginning. Guess I’ll have to take what he’s offering before it goes away.

I snapped out of my reverie, realizing that Hotaru was already walking away, not caring if I lagged behind. Mou, she’s always like that. “Hotaru! Wait up!” I ran to her, in time to hear her mutter something I didn’t quite comprehend. “Don’t leave me behind like that! I might have gotten lost.”

“Ask directions.” I pouted at that. Why does Hotaru always have to be so cold sometimes? I know it’s her way of showing her love, but sometimes it’s so mean.

There were few students in front of the bulletin board where class assignments were found. Most of them must’ve gone to see their classrooms or decided to tour the school for a while. It’s still forty-five minutes before the opening ceremony, and this school is huge so I guess a tour or so wouldn’t hurt.

“Yukihira Mikan, Yukihira Mikan…” I looked for my name, taking quick glances at Hotaru just in case she leaves me again. I trailed my finger down the female portion of the class lists. I didn’t do so well with the entrance exam—all the more reason to not have much hope in being classmates with Hotaru.

“Found it! Class 1 – C.” It’s the last class in the level too. I wonder if class assignments are made according to grades. If they are then…

“I’m in Class 1 – A, fortunately.” I turned to look at my best friend, finding a smile—or most likely a smirk—glued on her face. Sigh. “They do assign classes according to grades. Figures…” I muttered, dropping my head low as I whimpered in waterfalls. So much for being classmates.

“They don’t. You’re classmates with Tobita, idiot.” I looked back at her immediately. “Tobita?” She clearly hasn’t been opening up to me. Oh no. Does my dearest Hotaru have other guinea pigs? Or maybe he’s her b-b-boy—

“Yes?” I turned to look at the person now beside Hotaru. He had neat blonde hair—that looked a bit overcooked or something like that—and golden eyes behind his glasses. “You are…?” I managed to say. He seemed like a nice person—and if Hotaru’s befriended him, then he really must be a nice guy.

“Tobita, Tobita Yuu. Nice to meet you, Sakura-san.” So this is Tobita. Wait, how did he know my name? “I’m Hotaru’s classmate from middle school. She mentioned a great deal about you.”

I felt my cheeks burning up and my smile widening. Although Hotaru and I aren’t classmates, I’m so happy to hear that she mentioned about me to one of her friends in middle school—which, I might add, she never bothered telling me about.

I shook hands with Tobita-san and replied with a, “Nice to meet you too.” He then told me about how he and Hotaru met. It turns out he was the class representative of their class in middle school. Explains why he looked kind of smart, and why Hotaru said that class assignments weren’t based on grades.

Sniff.

There was the slightest chance of me and her being classmates and luck wasn’t on my side. I wonder if it’s because I already needed a huge amount of luck with my entrance exams here. Sigh. Whatever the case is, I need to pull myself together—Hotaru and I are schoolmates, that’s a start! There’s a chance we could be classmates next year, so being schoolmates should be enough for now.

“What’s that?” I stopped in my tracks—we were supposed to walk to our classrooms, but my eyes caught sight of a small shop a few steps ahead.

“That’s the academy’s gift shop. It’s one of the small stores in the campus.” I nodded at Tobita-san’s reply, finding myself now in front of the small shop. I really adored little shops like these—just looking at their displays made me captivated! “Let’s check it out. We still have time for a small stop.”

I looked at Tobita-san and nodded, pretty sure that I had this big grin on my face. Without a second more, I hopped in the small store and marveled at the items for sale. Everything seemed so exclusive and costly—stuff you’d probably find in five-star hotels.

There were pens, accessories, key-chains, bags, and lots of other novelty items. There were even clothing accessories—it’s so unlikely for a school to even have these things. Alice Academy’s really prestigious. I ought to ask mom how she managed to pay for my schooling here when I get home.

I went over to the display near the counter, gazing at the bracelets they lined up. “Kawaii!”

“Would you like to purchase one?” I looked at the saleslady apologetically. “Sorry, but I don’t have enough money.” I didn’t fail to see the price tags. Alice Academy really stands up to its reputation. I bet my allowance would barely be enough to buy anything from here.

“Since today is the first day of the new school year, we’re having a 30% discount on all items.” As much as that sounds tempting, and even though I’m not that good with math, I still don’t think I can afford anything. I can only look at them—I’d have to save up for months if I want one of these bracelets. Still, I wanna buy something.

“What are these made of?” I turned to look at Hotaru, surprised. She wasn’t really the type who likes accessories. She once said she didn’t want to wear them because they made her feel heavy. Typical Hotaru.

“Most of them are made of silver and gold.” I moved my eyes to where Hotaru’s eyes were laid. On the top were several charms and two bracelets serving as samples to what the bracelets would like with the charms all in all. Below them were the chains.

“These bracelets are the academy’s newest items.” I looked at the articles, marveling them by each passing second. I scanned the price tags and as expected, the charms were beyond my reach. They’d take three or four months of savings if I want to purchase them. Although surprisingly enough, the chains—with the discount rate applied—might be affordable for me.

“Anou…can I see this?” I pointed to the chain at the lower right, the one with the price tag I couldn’t read properly. The light bouncing off from the ceiling to the display case made it hard to see.

The saleslady opened the lock on the display case and took out the chain I asked for. I immediately scanned it, looking at its features. It was made of silver—quite lighter than I thought it’d be. It had a star dangling by its lock, and I found that totally cute! If anything, I could wear this without the charms at all!

“With the discount rate, that should be around 1 500 to 1 700 Yen—would you like to buy it?”

“Yes please!” It was a good thing to save some of the money I used in the summer festival. I gave the bracelet back to the saleslady so she could pack it up and prepare the receipt.

“Are you just going to buy the chain?” I opened my satchel, fumbling for my wallet as I answered Tobita-san’s question. “I’ll buy the charms another time. I can’t afford them right now, but it’s a start! Besides, the chain alone looks cute enough for me.” I threw him and Hotaru an energetic smile as I took out the cash from my wallet and placed them on the counter.

“Your school ID please.” I raised an eyebrow, looking at the saleslady quizzically. “Etou…why?”

“In Alice Academy, when you purchase an item from the campus stores, they scan your school ID for validation and security purposes,” Tobita-san explained. “It’s found in the student handbook.”

My mouth formed an O-shape and my eyes were sparkling in amazement. Alice Academy’s really incredible! Even the shopping district in town doesn’t have a system like this! I don’t even think that the huge department stores would have this kind of stuff either. It’s so hard to believe I’m in this kind of school—and I’m schoolmates with Hotaru too! Everything feels like a dream—I hope no one pinches me awake if it really i—

BAKA!

Itaiii. Hotaru and her inventions make a real scary combo—the dark side behind their cuteness. Now that I think about it, most of Hotaru’s inventions are based on animals. I wonder why…

“Stop drooling and get this over with.”

“Okay, okay.” Sigh. Hotaru can be such a killjoy sometimes. I took out my school ID from my wallet and gave it to the saleslady. She hovered it over a scanner of some sort, and then she typed something on the computer before she returned it to me along with my purchased item in a neat paper bag while saying, “Thank you and please come again.”

“Well, with that done, let’s get going, shall we?” I nodded, and soon we were back in the halls again. We were walking together and I was between Hotaru-chan and Tobita-san. I opened up the paper bag and fished out the chain I bought, putting it on my wrist.

“It suits you well, Sakura-san.” I blushed at his statement. “Just call me Mikan-chan, if you don’t mind,” I replied, lifting up my hand to eye level, admiring the small dangling star. There was this strange feeling nagging at the back of my mind as I looked at it. I couldn’t pinpoint as to what exactly it was, but the feeling was there, and it was hard to shrug it off.

I put my hand down as soon as we reached the stairs. I somewhat felt excited to what would await me once we get on the second floor. “Are our classrooms upstairs?” I asked, glancing at Tobita-san for an answer. Hotaru was reading a book—which came out from nowhere and I don’t know when she started reading it—and Tobita-san was a fun conversationalist, my first other friend here in the academy.

“Yes. Classrooms are found in the second floor up until the third floor. Most of the offices are found in the first floor.” Tobita-san sure knows a lot. He fits the description of a class president perfectly. “Then what are the other buildings for?”

“The other buildings are for club activities. There’s also one whole building solely used as a library. The academy is supported by eight governors and a few big companies, explaining the wide campus.”

“Then if that’s the case, the tuition fee must really be expensive, right?” Hearing his explanation made it even harder to believe that mom would let me in this place. Where on earth a feature writer would get so much money?

“You could say so. Half of the students here are scholars invited by the academy, including myself.”

“I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. You look really intelligent to begin with.” Four-eyed people really do give that impression, no? Plus, Tobita-san’s been explaining a lot to me.

“Well, we separate here.” I looked at Hotaru—her sudden statement waking me up. I scanned my surroundings and found myself in front of Class 1 – C.

“Good luck with her, Iinchou,” she said, walking ahead. My foot stepped forward out of instinct, but then I stopped, seeing Hotaru’s occupied expression. I sighed. I would’ve clung on her like I usually do, but the excitement this academy has stirred up on me was hard to resist. Oh yeah, she said a nickname, but to whom…? “Iinchou?”

“Yes?” I turned instantly to my newest friend. “Ah, so it’s Tobita-san!”

“The nickname’s been attaching to my image.” Oh yeah, he’s been class president before. Figures. “Shall we go in the classroom now?” I nodded enthusiastically at his invite, fixing my uniform a bit and gearing up my bag as I followed behind him.

A new school calls for a new life. I want to make the best of my memories here in Alice Academy. I elevated my hand a bit, taking another look at the dangling star on my wrist. There was still that feeling, sitting at the back of my mind, but for now I’ll concentrate on making my years here in the academy as meaningful as my parents’.

Yeah, that’s it. My goal here—to make and treasure as many memories as possible.

To Be Continued…

Phew! I’m finally finished. This is my first time doing two stories at the same time, but I’ll do the best that I can with it. This is, after all, dedicated to the readers of my past stories. Kill that damn hacker who scared me off and wasted my two stories. Grrr. Oh yeah, I apologize if you find the chat between Mikan and Yuka long. It was raining and I was disconnected so I was completely focused and yeah, probably got carried away and prolonged it too much. Gomenasai! Although I have to admit I did enjoy writing that. x)

To make it clear to everyone, this story isn’t based on romance alone (most readers love that, as I’ve noticed). It consists of several connected one shots also relating to friendship, family, and lessons in life. Oh yeah, since school is nearing, most of my updates will be a lot later than before.

Sniff.

The dreaded days are about to come and there’s no escape. Well, unless the rain continues. I love the rain these days—no thunders or lightnings, just soft, medium (?) rainfall. It’s just wonderful—compared to the scorching sun, it’s much easier to bear the cold. And if there’s a storm coming…Bwuahahaha.

That’s enough of my babbles. I have a weird habit of writing long author’s notes. It’s time for you readers to do what you are supposed to do. Review. Review. Review. Or else I won’t make Mikan meet Natsume until around the fifth charm. They’re supposed to meet at the first charm (chapter) which will be my next update on this story, but if I don’t get at least 20 long reviews

I’d appreciate comments, suggestions, and constructive criticisms very much. :)) Feel free to ask questions too. A big round of applause to my two proofreaders, Yumeyuki Daichi and Dianne-senpai! Thanks so much for taking the time to proofread. Love you guys to bits.

Well, people, time to review!

Hugs and Kisses,
Rosa en Bouton

PS. Feel free to read my other story, The Painter and the Playwrightand review too! ^^
PSS. I'll update on TPATP when I can, okay?
PSSS. Don't you just love the rain? LOLZ. I'm wasting your time. Get on with it and review!
PSSSS. Continue giggling.
PSSSSS. I blame Ruru-chan for this post-script addiction. Blame her too.
PSSSSSS. Nahh, just wasting your time. =))
