On the Desk

She couldn't find it. She couldn't find it! But she put it there, no three minutes ago! It was driving her nuts! And she was going to be late! That was. Just. Awful. Aw-ful. She felt like tearing the whole place to bits to find it. She had been working on it for hours!

"Sonoko?"

She started ripping things out of drawers. Not there.

"Sonoko, what are you doing?"

"Looking for something."

Not there either.

"...Do you really need it?"

"I want it, but I need to find it first."

"What about on the desk?"

"I already checked-"

"Not in this room, another one."

Sonoko stopped all searching and spun around to look at Makoto as if something just dawned on her.

"Makoto, you're brilliant."

She kissed Makoto on the cheek before zooming out of the room and into a different one, at the end of the hall. And yes, there it was! On the desk. She remembered that desk very clearly. Why did she think it was the other one? She hugged it against her chest with a sigh of relief. Well, now she knew where it wa-

"What is it you were looking for, anyway?"

Sonoko jumped and turned to Makoto, forgetting and failing to hide it from him. He walked up to her and stared at it for a moment. Then looked back up at Sonoko.

"Who is it for?" he asked, his voice suddenly colder.

"W-Well, it's...it's..."

"You can give it to whoever you feel like, Sonoko, there's no problem to that. I just want to know who it's for, see what that person is like."

His tone became softer, maybe even a little sad. Sonoko hesitated, then shoved it in Makoto's hands, looking at him in the eyes.

"It's for you."

Makoto first stared at it, then blushed.

"O-Oh! I- uh- well..."

Sonoko smiled.

"Happy valentine's day, Makoto."
