A/N: I’ve never really been able to come up with a good enough idea for Jackie and Hyde but after watching the episode after Hyde married Sam I just thought…No, not OK, very bad, very wrong. I refuse to believe that Jackie could’ve moved on that fast and that Hyde was really that OK with the whole situation and that Jackie was meant to be with Fez (shudders). So let’s try to make up for that whole horrible disaster. As far as characters go, I believe situations like this make them further grow and I think it would've been a good opportunity to make Jackie further grow. Enjoy…
P.S. The title for this story is based on a song I wrote based off Jackie and Hyde’s relationship. Now enjoy...
From the Start
Chapter 1: Good-bye
Hyde, Kelso and Fez were all in the basement just hanging out together, but no one had more on his mind than Steven Hyde. It was just too much to absorb. He had married a stripper and lost the only girl who had not only wanted marry him but had loved him as well. He had accused her of being unfaithful with Michael and let his anger get the best of him, causing him to do something idiotic and thus ending the relationship in the worst way possible.
“Hey Hyde did you hear Jackie’s leaving?” Kelso asked sitting beside him on the couch.
Hyde momentarily felt a weird tinge of guilt upon hearing Jackie’s name but he ignored it. “Yeah and I quit listening to Led Zeppelin and switched to Abba,” Hyde responded dryly. “Jackie’s not going anywhere, she never does.”
She had lied about going to Chicago the first time and when she finally did go she ended up back where she started. ‘To get you back.’ Again Hyde just ignored the voice in his head. Things with him and Jackie were over. There was no way she’d forgive him after marrying Sam and he still didn’t fully believe her when she claimed nothing happened between her and Kelso in Chicago.
“I don’t know man…” said Kelso stretching. “She rented a U-haul and already packed up her stuff.”
Fez suddenly smiled and nodded enthusiastically. “Yes, I offered to help her move but... she fired me when she found out I was stealing her bras.”
Kelso laughed and smiled back at Fez. “Yeah… I stole her panties!”
Hyde resisted the urge to punch Michael and quickly became confused about the whole situation. “Huh…she didn’t tell me anything,” he said bitterly.
“Well of course not, you left her for a hot and sexy stripper,” Fez said in a disapproving voice. His voice quickly turned jealous. “You lucky bastard.”
Fez had a good point. It’s not like they were together, Jackie didn’t need to tell him anything let alone talk to him. Still he didn’t like the idea of Jackie hating him all over or even more than before. Hell he didn’t even like the idea of hurting her, but that’s just what he did again. But it wasn’t as if she was completely innocent either, she had done her damage too with all her pressuring him into marriage and the history she had with Kelso that he still couldn’t get over. If anything they had really only been good at two things in their relationship: Sex and hurting one another. If that didn’t spell disaster from the start then he didn’t know what did.
All the guys shifted their attention to the door when they heard someone coming down the stairs. Hyde was relieved when it was Donna. Relief quickly turned to regret when he saw how pissed she looked.
‘Here we go,’ thought Hyde.
“Great job Hyde!” Donna yelled at him. “Thanks to you Jackie’s leaving now. I hope you’re happy.”
Hyde just shrugged and looked up thoughtfully. “Well let me think…I left a spoiled, whining, narcissistic, shallow girlfriend for a wife that hardly wears any clothes.” He smiled widely at Donna. “Yep I think I’m pretty happy.”
Donna shook her head in disappointment. She couldn’t believe he was acting like this. It was what he did best when he wanted to avoid personal responsibility, but this was just taking it too far. “I can’t believe you’re that cold-hearted. Either you never loved Jackie at all or you’re just scared to face your feelings.”
Hyde hated it when people were able to read him like that. He could admit she was right or he could just get mad at her. Anger was always easiest. “Hey this is none of your business alright!” he yelled back now getting up to face her. “What happened, happened. If Jackie wants to leave then all the luck in the world to her, I don’t give a crap.”
Just when he finished his sentence, who else but Jackie happened to walk through the door. Everything seemed to go silent as Jackie and Hyde looked each other in the eyes for the first time since Sam’s arrival. “Gee thanks,” she said in a hurt voice.
Hyde wasn’t sure what she meant until he realized she’d heard what he had said. "Jackie I-’’
“No!” Jackie snapped cutting him off. “It’s OK Hyde…Donna can I talk to you for a minute?”
“Sure,” said Donna following her friend outside and casting Hyde one last dirty look.
Hyde sighed when the door shut behind them. Boy did he know how to be mean.
“Dude, did Jackie just call you Hyde?” asked Kelso in an astonished voice.
Hyde looked over at him wearily. “Yeah… so?”
Kelso started laughing that retarded laugh whenever he realized something remotely significant. “Man she’s never called you by your last name not even when she use to hate you.”
Hyde hated it whenever Kelso was right about something, but this really hit him hard. She had never really called him Hyde. She always called him Steven; she always called people by their first name to acknowledge them. By calling him by his last name was basically her way of telling him he didn’t matter anymore. He was a nobody to her. Hyde curled his hand into a fist, he wanted to hit something.
“Oh poor Hyde must be feeling awful,” said Fez. “Luckily he has a hot slut of a wife he can express his feelings toward in a sexual way.”
Hyde smiled at his foreign friend. Sex was just as good as hurting someone. “Good idea Fez.” Hyde walked off to find Sam. He didn’t feel anything for her, but that was what made her safe. She was good for company and good for sex and right now that’s all he needed.
“Jackie are you sure about this?” asked Donna truly concerned for her friend. She didn’t want her to do something she’d regret just because she was mad at Hyde. He had already made that mistake when he drunkenly married Sam.
Jackie sadly looked at her friend. “Donna I’ve been so stupid. I gave up my job and my future for a guy who didn’t really want to be with me. I’ve wasted so much time trying to get guys to marry me and making an ass of myself. Well not anymore Donna!” she said fiercely putting her hands on her hips. “I’m going to have a future, I’m going to be an independent woman and I’m done with men forever.”
Donna had to admit she was impressed by Jackie’s new-found strength. Maybe this whole experience would be good for her. “Wow Jackie I think I might actually miss you. I mean you insult me a lot and make fun of the way I dress and put on my make-up…but still I’m really going to miss you.”
Jackie smiled at her. “I’ll miss you too Donna, and all that stuff I said before was only because I felt threatened by you.”
Donnas’ eyes shot wide open in surprise. “Really?” she asked.
Jackie nodded. “Yeah, you’re a really great person who everyone loves and Eric should be very grateful he has you in his life.”
Again Donna was taken off guard. She expected Jackie to say something about feeling threatened by her because she was built like a lumberjack or an Amazon, but Jackie was actually complimenting her! “Wow Jackie did you take an extra nice pill this morning?”
Jackie just giggled. “I just wanted you to know that before I left. You’ve been a really good friend Donna, especially through this whole thing with Hyde.”
Donna frowned. She had never heard her call Steven “Hyde” before. She put a supportive hand on Jackie’s shoulder. “Don’t worry Jackie one day you’ll find someone who’ll appreciate you and love you forever.”
Jackie scoffed and shook her head doubtfully. “I’ve heard it all before. Just go ask Hyde how he feels about me and all you’ll get is a good laugh in the face.”
Donna sighed. “Jackie I know right now he seems like a bad guy, but you know how he is. He’s just hiding his emotions because he’s scared of getting hurt.”
Jackie rolled her eyes. She did know how he was and that’s what she needed to get away from. “Well I’m tired of being the one who gets hurt just because he’s afraid of his feelings.” She bit her bottom lip remembering how hard she tried, remembering the fighting, the kisses, the small gestures, the jealousy, the pain, Sam. “I mean Donna I really loved him and I-’’ her voice cracked and before she could stop she was crying in her hands and shaking uncontrollably.
Donna pulled her friend into her arms and held her close while she let it all out. “I’m sorry,” she whispered to her.
“Alright Jackie,” said Kelso walking over to her. “You’re all set… and uh…” he looked around to make sure no one could hear him before smiling mischievously down at her. “If you want to…you know do it one last time,” he said flexing his muscles at her. “Just for old times’’ sake…” Kelso continued to smile down at her but it did nothing for Jackie. Not anymore, she had moved past that a long time ago.
Still she smiled at him mockingly and replied. “No thanks Michael.”
It was enough to make him sigh in defeat. “Are you sure?” he asked hopefully one last time.
“Positive Michael. But I will miss you man whore ways,” she said opening her arms for a hug. Michael happily embraced her.
“I’ll miss you too Jackie. No matter what you’ll always be my number one girl.” Jackie released him and smiled up at him because she knew he meant it.
“Thanks Michael.” She watched him walk away while Fez made his way up to her to say good-bye next. He took her hands in hers and smiled lovingly at her.
“Jackie will miss the smell of your perfume…the feel of your soft silky hair…” he suddenly stopped to look at her questioningly. “Can I have a piece of your hair?”
Jackie looked at him strangely before saying, “No…but you can have that other bra you just stole.”
Fez started laughing nervously. “Bra? What bra?” he continued to laugh before running away.
Donna walked up to Jackie and immediately gave her a strong hug before letting go and sighing. “I can’t believe you’re actually leaving point place. I’m a little jealous.”
“Oh don’t worry Donna, maybe if you’re lucky one day you’ll be as successful as me.” Jackie pushed Donna playfully to let her know she was joking. They both knew Donna would make it big one day when the time was right. But right now it was Jackie’s time to start her whole life. She about to get in her car when a voice stopped her.
“Hey!” she turned around and noticed Hyde running toward her. She felt like her whole body had stopped functioning. What was he doing here?
They both stood in front of each other not saying a word. It was like something needed to be said but none of them had the strength to do it. Jackie wanted to for a split second, to make things better and leave with a little closure. But her anger overpowered any other emotion she held for the man in front of her.
“What are you doing here? Don’t you have to help your wife fish singles out of her G-string?” she snapped at him.
Hyde couldn’t believe he thought coming down here would make a difference. She was still angry and suddenly so was he. If she wanted to play it like that then he could play right back. “Just thought I’d say bye before starting a happier and more care free life without you.”
Jackie just nodded at him. She wasn’t surprised by his coldness and she wouldn’t allow it to get the best of her anymore. “I hope you have a good life without me,” said Jackie getting in her car. “Because I know I will without you.” She slammed the car door shut and drove off. She didn’t even bother looking in her rear view mirror to see if he was still there.
