A Teacher's Life

Chapter One: Nightmare. . .

“Daddy!” Damien Del-Rio awoke to the sound of his three year old daughter screaming. He quickly made it to her room without tripping over anything. He seemed to be pretty good at keeping his balance while being half asleep. He quickly sat down on his toddler's bed.

“Shhh baby, you're okay. Did you have a nightmare?” Damien inquired, as he caressed her face, checking for any sign of a fever. Luckily, there wasn't one at all.

“Nightmare?” The little girl questioned.

“A nightmare is a bad dream...” He told her. She nodded.

“I fell off of a cliff and no body was there to catch me...” She explained, her breathing calming down from the fast pace it was at.

“Mommy and I will always be here to catch you when you fall.” He said, tucking her in once again. Damien had a feeling that it wouldn't be that easy.

“Dad, can you sing to me?” Damien cleared his throat and he picked Jordan up and he sat down on the rocking chair in her room.

“Sure... okay, now what should I sing?” He wondered. Then he just sang whatever song came out. 'I set out on a narrow way, many years ago. Hoping I would find true love, along the broken road. But I got lost a time or two, wiped my brow and kept pushing through. I couldn't see how every sign, pointed straight to you. Every long lost dream, led me to where you are. Others who broke my heart, they were like northern stars. Pointing me on my way, into your loving arms. This much I know is true, that god blessed the broken road, that led me straight to you. I think about the years I've spent, just passing through. I'd like to have the time I lost, and give it back to you. You just smiled and took my hands, you've been there, you understand. It's all apart of a grander plan, that is coming true. Every long lost dream, led me to where you are. Others who broke my heart, they were like northern stars. Pointing me on my way, into your loving arms. This much I know is true, that god blessed the broken road, that led me straight to you...”

He stared down at Jordan who was cuddled right up to him. “Another song please? I'm not sleepy yet...”

By the time Damien had gotten to bed himself it was three thirty in the morning and he had to be up at the absolute latest by six. Of course when he awoke he was very, very tired. He made sure to grab a couple VHS's on his way out the door.

“Okay, now remember that project that we were talking about?” Mr. Del-Rio finished that statement with a yawn. “Pardon me..”

“Yeah...” A student said out loud, causing Mr. Del-Rio to move on with what he started off saying.

“Well, I'll go over it for those who weren't here yesterday. You have a couple days to bring in home videos either of yourself or your parents and you or even just your parents. You will see how this project connects to the next unit we're going to jump into. I brought a couple VHS's of me actually, if you wanted to watch them but I don't think you'd want to...” He trailed off. The students protested, seeing some footage of Del-Rio outside of school was going to be very interesting.

“Are you kidding? Mr. Del-Rio, any dirt we can get on you would be awesome...” Koby added with a grin. Mr. Del-Rio smiled too.

“Alright then,” He picked up the first VHS that caressed his skin. He noticed that the sticker on the side of the VHS was torn a bit, but he saw his name on it so it had to have been based on him right? “This one's a bit of a mystery so let's pop it in and see what it is. I hope it's nothing too embarrassing...” The students chucked and whispered, they couldn't wait to see what was on the tape.

There was a stage set up with a circular like tower with bars coming down, there in the center of the contraption was Damien, in nothing but a waist wrap, light material to represent the fashion of that time. It only flattered his tightly toned body and abdomen. He sat up against the bars and music began to play.

(Damien/Mr. Del-Rio singing)

Close every door to me,

hide all the world from me.

Bar all the windows,

and shut out the light.

Do what you want with me,

hate me and laugh at me.

Darken my daytime,

and torture my night.

If my life were important I,

would ask will I live or die.

But I know the answers,

lie far from this world.

Close every door to me,

keep those I love from me.

Children of Israel,

are never alone.

For I know I shall find,

my own piece of mind.

For I have been promised,

a land of my own.

(Instrumental)

Just give me a number,

instead of my name.

Forget all about me,

and let me decay.

I do not matter,

I'm only one person.

Destroy me completely,

then throw me away.

If my life were important I,

would ask will I live or die.

But I know the answers,

lie far from this world.

As the song reached its climatic section, Damien then got up and grasped the bars, with such feeling and emotion. Anyone could feelthe passion flowing through his voice and body language.

Close every door to me,

keep those I love from me.

Children of Israel,

are never alone.

For we know we shall find,

our own piece of mind.

For we have been promised,

a land of our own!

Roars of clapping and hooting came from the audience. They gave him a standing ovation as well, who knew that kid had such a big voice?

“Holy shit, Mr. Del-Rio, you can sing!” Koby complimented right away. “That last note was, wow, it gave me goosebumps...” The other students agreed.

“That was a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolored Dreamcoat, was it not?” Mr. Del-Rio nodded, his face completely red. Boy, was that ever embarrassing... his students had seen him in nothing but cloth covering his butt and groin... wow. Personal much?

“Wow, that was totally embarrassing...” He confessed. “I feel so, weird after seeing that again. I mean, people said I was good but, there was no way that was me...” He said with a chuckle. “Anyway, I guess we should move on.”

“Wait!” Dylan cut in suddenly.

“Yes?” Mr. Del-Rio answered.

“Was your hair really that long?” Mr. Del-Rio shook his head.

“No way would I ever grow my hair that long Dylan... they were extensions, I felt very feminine.” He told them sincerely. “It was so awkward...”Then the bell rang and he wished the students a great remainder of the day.

“Wow, who knew that Mr. D was and perhaps still is that talented?” Eitan stated to his amazed about what hidden talents were under the shells of many people. Especially Del-Rio...

“No kidding, he could have totally made it on broadway with that voice.” Koby agreed.

“But he decided to teach us instead...” Jade chimed in. “I'm glad he did.” She expressed.

“Same, he's actually one of the best teachers here at Stiles.” Soon the students were all on their way home.

Apparently Mr. Del-Rio was/is a very talented person. :) Well, it might be off to a slow start, but an interesting one at that. What about the next video? What about the videos that the students have to bring in? Stay tuned if you want to find out how this story unfolds. :)
