What Have I Become?
I came up with this idea while I was reading Twilight. I will try not to use too much Twilight-ish-ness in it but I’m not promising anything. Also, I hope it will either be not as cheesy (not that there’s anything wrong with that) or mega cheesy enough to make you giggle.
Piper’s POV
I breathed in the cool evening air and stared out at the blood red sky. Day fourteen since Aerrow went missing, I reminded myself. Where on earth was he? Everyone had simply woken up to him…well…not being there. There was no sign of a struggle and even Radarr, who shares Aerrow’s room, wasn’t disturbed in the night. Everyone had different reactions. Stork thought that he must have been eaten by Sky Sharks in the night. Junko thought it was his fault for eating his dessert, the silly cute ‘lil dork that he is. Finn thought that Aerrow had finally cracked and ran away. No one really knows what Radarr thought. I guess I thought the worst. I thought that it was me, because I failed to fix the Condor’s engine crystals first time round. It was a silly thing to think because I knew Aerrow better than that. Then I had thought that maybe Finn was right; he had finally cracked from the pressure of being a Sky Knight. The thought mad me shiver, or maybe it was the cool, light breeze.
I sighed and stared at my feet, which had suddenly become really interesting.
“Oh Aerrow…where are you?” I whispered.
I heard a dull thud somewhere in front of me and I looked up. Aerrow was there. He stopped dead as soon as he saw me.
“Aerrow?” I smiled weakly.
For some reason, his face didn’t even twitch into a grin. He actually looked a little spooked.
I rushed up to him and hugged him as tightly as I could. That was when I first realised that something was off. His skin was ice cold and pale and seemed to be rock hard. His jaw was rigid and he appeared to be holding his breath. He didn’t look at me or hug me back.
“Oh, Aerrow, where have you been? We’ve all missed you! Radarr and I especially! Oh my gosh, the guys will be so happy! And-“
“Yeah,” he said rather coldly. “I think I need to sleep now.”
He removed himself from my arms and walked away from me. I could see his jaw was still rigid. He disappeared into the Condor and I heard his bedroom door slam. Finn walked up to me.
“What the heck was that about?” he asked.
“I don’t know. Did you see the way he was holding himself? Something’s wrong with him. He goes missing for two weeks and comes back and says nothing!”
“Meh…maybe he’s just really tired.”
I bit my lip. I wasn’t convinced.
“Maybe I should go see him,” I said doubtfully.
“Whatever…”
Finn walked away.
Aerrow’s POV
I slammed my bedroom door and threw myself to the bed. I let out my breath. That was so close it was almost unbelievable. My throat, eyes and chest burned. I screwed them shut and breathed in the scent of my pillow. The smell of my old human form still clung to the fabric, yet I found it somehow unappealing. Then I caught a whiff of Radarr, and what I did next shocked even me.
I jumped to my feet, grabbed the pillow in both hands and ripped it clean in half. I gasped and dropped the pillow halves, watching the white duck feathers glide to the floor lightly.
“What have I become?” I asked aloud.
‘A monster,’ my brain answered. ‘An animal…a vampire.’
And that was the simple truth of it. I didn’t remember much. I remembered red eyes, a sharp pain in my neck, cruel laughter…then more pain…for days. Then I woke up. The red eyes presented me with a person who smelled amazing…my throat, eyes and chest had burned…and I…
A single red tear fell from my eye.
KNOCK, KNOCK!
I jumped.
“Aerrow? Are you in there? Please let me in, I can tell there’s something up with you,” Piper said.
“No!” I said quickly.
Silence, then, “What is going on Aerrow? Let me in.”
“No!”
Before I could use my super awesome speed to get to the door and hold it shut with my super awesome strength, Piper had opened it. I took a sharp gulp of air and held my breath.
“Tell me what’s going on!” she demanded.
I considered it for a moment.
“I can’t tell you,” I said, wasting breath.
Piper looked at me stubbornly.
“Leave me alone, Piper.”
I walked past her and onto the Landing Strip, breathing fresh air again. She followed me.
“Guys!” she yelled.
Stork, Junko, Finn and Radarr all appeared on the Landing Strip and looked at me warily.
“Now you can tell us all what’s wrong with you!”
“I-I…I can’t. I’m sorry Piper.”
“Yes you can! Surely it’s nothing that bad?”
I spoke without thinking. “So you think being a blood-thirsty vampire isn’t that bad? Why don’t you give it a try?”
I gasped and so did everyone else. Stork, Junko and Finn screamed and ran from me as fast as they could. I raised my hand towards them.
“Wait!”
They didn’t stop. I looked at Radarr who was shaking. I knelt down.
“Radarr, buddy, I-“
But he gave a loud screech and raced off after the other three. I stood up and looked at Piper. She had a hand over her mouth and the other over her throat.
“Piper, you have every right to be terrified of me. I’m scared of myself! I’m scared of what I can do. I’ve killed already! If I smell any living thing, I go insane just to suck the life out of it! It’s so hard to control! That’s why I’ve been holding my breath,” I said.
“You’re being serious?” she squeaked.
I swallowed, trying to dim the burning in my throat a little.
“I’m sorry,” I said.
Sorry for what? You might I ask. I dunno…I only write what comes into my head when it comes into my head. The next chapter will be up ASAP!
