It was Father’s day again…The day all children, big and small, celebrate their fathers’, all so grateful to have a father in their life. The only people he thought should be depressed on that day, were the children who lost their fathers in accidents, suicides, or murder. But for Charles Lee Ray, there was a different reason why he was depressed that day. Not because he never knew his own father when he was a small child, but because today was the first father’s day since the murder of his 5-year-old daughter, Stella. He could still remember every father’s day, when Stella was around. Stella would always go into her parents’ room and wake up her daddy, and take by his hand into the kitchen, and every year, Tiffany would be in there, waiting for him, with something special for breakfast made for him, which Stella always helped make. Then Stella would scream, “Happy Father’s Day, daddy!” It always warmed that empty spot inside his heart…

But after Stella passed away, that spot disappeared and he had gotten worse. After Stella was murdered, after all the media made Stella look more like a mythical creature than the innocent little girl that she really was, and after the media twisted and turned what Chucky had told police into, ‘Father admits sexual abuse on daughter’, Chucky started to drink, to get rid of all the nightmares…all the nightmares that involved him not being able to help his daughter when she needed him most…

Tiffany had her own way to express her sadness over their loss…She’d always watch home movies of Stella, on mother’s day, Stella’s birthday/death anniversary, and other major holidays that had been Stella’s favorite when she was alive. And while Chucky was passed out on the sofa in their apartment living room, Tiffany would often cry and look at pictures of Stella from when she was an infant till her very last day alive, and wish deep down that Stella would come back from wherever she was…Stella would be the only one to get Chucky to stop drinking, to bring their family back together…but mostly, Stella would be able to tell everyone who really murdered her. But, Tiffany knew deep down inside that Stella would never come back…John had said so. That’s what made Tiffany, and Chucky’s pain even worse.

Tiffany started to weep silently a she held a picture of Stella close to her. It was a new picture of Stella, one she hadn’t seen before. It was when Stella was 3-years-old, from one of her photo shoots. Stella was smiling in the picture. Her dark blue eyes were shining in the light and her dark brown hair was curled down to her shoulders. She looked like a little angel. Tiffany smiled a little. She had to show Chucky this picture…Maybe he’d think about what he’s doing and to stop drinking and remember that if Stella was still alive, she wouldn’t want to see her father drinking.

Tiffany held the picture in her left hand as she walked out the room she and Chucky shared, and walked into the living room where Chucky was. She saw him passed out on the sofa and gently nudged him. She looked closer and saw that he actually wasn’t passed out, but instead watching some news coverage. Tiffany looked at the TV, and saw in big black letters, “SUSPECT IN STELLA MARIE FISHER-RAY’S MURDER”. “Oh, my God, they caught him.” She whispered, putting a hand over her mouth.

“That’s not him,” Chucky snapped, a bit slurred. He wasn’t as drunk as he usually was this time, not now after hearing about the new suspect. The suspect was a man, about 20-years-old, who also was well known pedophile. But…the pedophile had videos of Stella…About 20 videos of Stella, playing, walking, and getting dressed. But Chucky took one look at the man and knew those videos didn’t belong to him…They probably belonged to the real killer.

“How do you know that? That could be him!” Tiffany shouted at him, getting up from her spot on the sofa. Chucky said nothing but instead drank some more whiskey.

“It probably is him though…” Tiffany said quietly, looking at the small picture of Stella, which was still in her hand.

Chucky laughed and shook his head. “I doubt it…” He said, drunkenly.

“Don’t you miss Stella at all?!” Tiffany finally screamed, then she gasped and realized what had just escaped her mouth. Did she really just ask him that?

“No!” Chucky answered, but even in his drunken state, he knew he was lying. “I’m glad she’s …g-gone!” Chucky choked on the last word.

Tiffany felt tears form in her eyes. She threw Stella’s picture on the floor near Chucky and ran out the front door, sobbing.

Chucky looked down and saw the back of the picture. O the back it read, “Stella at 3-years-old.” Chucky picked it up and looked at it. Stella was smiling at him as if to say, “I love you, daddy.” As he stared at the picture he realized what he had just said. Did he really say he didn’t miss Stella? He continued to stare at Stella’s small, angelic face, as tears began to formed in his eyes as he thought about what he had said. He loved and missed Stella more than words could describe. He didn’t want anyone to know that, but himself. He thought about if Stella was there to actually there to hear him say he didn’t miss her. It would break Stella’s heart…Each second Chucky thought about Stella, he grew more and more guilty for saying he didn’t miss her. “Stella…” He whispered to the picture, “I-I’m sorry, Stella. Daddy’s sorry…” Finally Chucky broke down and started to cry, with Stella’s picture still clutched in his hand…The only thing he could hear was Stella’s small, tender voice in the back of his head…

“Happy Father’s Day, Daddy…”
