Stella sighed as she vaguely heard Van Dyke telling her another story about his football team. She didn't know what happened, they had fun on their last date, for the short amount of time they had anyway. They were at a fancy restaurant, the lighting was romantic, and she was wearing the most amazing dress, a Stella Malone original. So why wasn't she having as much fun?
Maybe it had to do with Van Dyke's outfit. A little.
She sighed. When she conspired with Nick and Kevin to make Joe wear that outfit and make a fool himself, she'd first off never thought he'd be wearing that in front of the queen, and second of all she'd never thought it would backfire like that. She was leaning on her hand, partially because she was bored and partially to cover the sparkle that came off of Van Dyke's hat placed right next to him on the table.
She broke out of her daze as she Van Dyke's once musical laugh. She laughed along with him half-heartedly before looking up at her waitress, who thankfully had finally come with their food.
Why didn't she like Van Dyke as much anymore? She knew it wasn't just because of his outfit; after all she wasn't that shallow. After she heard Joe and Nick talk about that girl who was going to ask him out, Van Dyke was the furthest thing on her mind. It was all Joe's fault. That was the conclusion she kept coming back to as she ate her fettuccine alfredo.
Stella couldn't understand why she still had that small crush on Joe. He'd made it clearly obvious in years past that he didn't like her in that way. They were buds, best friends, pals. So why was it that recently, he'd been looking at her differently in some way? Maybe it was just wishing that made her think that. Maybe he wasn't looking at her differently in any way. She sighed once more as she heard Van Dyke begin another story about football.
As mad as she was at Joe, not that he knew that, he was the only person he could think to call for help. Kevin had finally asked Macy out on a date, to her relief, after Macy proved well at hiding her fangirl side when around the boys, and Nick couldn't drive. Joe was her only option.
"Would you excuse me for just a second," she asked as she got up, interrupting his story.
"Uh, yeah sure," he replied, clearly a bit stunned that she'd interrupted his story. She got out of her chair and walked to the girls' restroom, bag in hand. As soon as she got in the bathroom, checking to see if someone was in there, she pulled out her phone and immediately pressed 2 on her speed dial. She listened to the phone ring, before hearing Joe.
"Hey Stella, what up," he asked as Stella sighed in relief at the sound of his voice.
"Okay, you have to come here and pick me up," she said as she sat down on the sink, making sure it was dry before jumping on. She could hear Joe jump up from what she assumed to be the couch.
"Why, did he do something to you? I swear I'll kick his," he said angrily before Stella interrupted him.
"No, he didn't do anything wrong, no. Well unless boring me to death counts," she replied rolling her eyes at his over protectiveness, "Just please, come and pick me up. I'll say it was an emergency or something. Like last time. I don't know, I'll think of something but please just come pick me up." She heard Joe sigh over the phone before grumbling, which made Stella smile as she knew that meant he'd do it. She gave him the name and directions to the restaurant before hanging up. She looked at the time on her phone and figured she should at least go back out and finish her meal. Joe said he'd call when he was outside.
She walked back out and sat back down smiling at Van Dyke as she dove back into her meal. By the time she'd finished, Van Dyke had continued telling his story and Stella's phone hadn't rung yet. She laughed as he laughed; rolling her eyes mentally at the fact that she'd ever liked the guy. She had thought he was different.
She jumped a bit as her phone rang. She looked down at her phone and saw the caller id flash Joe before answering.
"Hey Joe, what's up," she said as Van Dyke looked on.
"Stella we have a serious emergency, you have to come out now," Joe yelled dramatically, "I'm right outside, let's go hurry!" Stella would've rolled her eyes if she hadn't remembered the plan.
"Oh my gosh, seriously? Okay, I'm coming right out, don't worry," she said in a worried tone as she hung up and looked at Van Dyke who looked confused.
"I'm sorry, Van Dyke but I have to go, it's an emergency," she said, "Don't worry, Joe's right outside. Thanks for the date, bye!" She quickly rushed out, not even giving him a chance to talk or a second glance as she walked outside seeing Joe's luxury car out in the corner. She walked up to it, putting her wrap over her as she opened the side door.
"Thank you so much, Joe," she said as she leaned over giving him a hug and kiss on the cheek, "You're a lifesaver." She turned to put her seatbelt on, missing the quite obvious blush on his cheeks after the kiss. When she turned back at him, he immediately started up the car and drove off, blowing Stella's hair in the wind.
Stella laughed at yet another joke he'd said as Joe drove into the driveway of his house. Stella was going to ask him to drive her home later but it wasn't that late anyway.
"So what were you doing when I called, anyway," she asked as Joe unlocked the door and the two walked in.
"Just doing some homework," he replied, "Nothing special. Nick was writing songs so I got a bit distracted anyway." Stella frowned as Joe walked toward the refrigerator.
"Strawberries," he asked, "I've had the weirdest craving for them lately." Stella nodded before sitting down on the stool, reaching over for a strawberry.
"So nothing special, huh," she asked as she bit into a strawberry, "What about that girl who was going to ask you out?" Joe shrugged as he sat down in the stool next to her.
"Eh, we went out yesterday," he said reaching for another strawberry, "but she wasn't all that special. Guess she was still a bit starstuck, even if the girls at school are used to us." Stella sighed as she grabbed another strawberry and bit into it, a bit of juice falling down on her neck. Joe let out a laugh as he reached behind him for a napkin.
"Here," he said handing her the napkin as Stella wiped away the strawberry juice, her cheeks burning a bit as she blushed. She looked back at Joe who was staring at her again.
"What," she asked as he broke out of his daze.
"Oh nothing," he replied, "um, you still have some on your lip there." Stella tried wiping it away before Joe took the napkin away, wiping away the bit of strawberry juice still remaining. Stella blushed more as she felt Joe carefully hold her chin up so he could wipe it away.
"Um, thanks," she said staring into his eyes. Joe nodded, still holding her chin up.
"No problem," he replied, continuing to stare into her eyes. He leaned in slightly, not wanting to scare her, before giving her a kiss, napkin still in hand.
Stella could've swooned if she wasn't intent on kissing him back. Her dream was finally coming true. She was kissing the man of her dreams, her best friend. She couldn't believe it was really happening, after all these years. Joe softly broke off the kiss and continued to stare at her.
"Wow," he said, slightly in a daze after kissing the girl of his dreams.
"Yeah," replied Stella, still in a daze herself. Joe looked behind her and saw what he'd bought earlier and blushed before getting up and walking toward it. Stella frowned before looking behind her to see Joe holding something behind his back.
"What's that," asked Stella. Joe shuffled his feet before revealing his gift, a bouquet of camelia blossoms. Stella smiled as she accepted the gift, smelling her favorite flowers.
"Van Dyke got me roses," she said, "But only you know me well enough to know I'm not very impressed by those. Thank you." Joe smiled as Stella leaned in for another kiss, he happily returning it. She finally got her prince charming, her savior of the night.
