Chapter 3: When Protectors Clash!

Just as Kara foretold, Gabriel came to the store seconds after she and Melinda hid. I couldn’t help but glare at the man; he had hurt Mel too many times before. Still, I couldn’t kick him out of the store-yet- so I simply pretended that I was working.

“Hey, Jim.” He said, walking up to me. Too forward for my taste. I thought, but I turned to him.

“Gabriel.” I said.

“Where is Melinda? I have something I need to tell her.” he said.

“She took a lunch break.” I explained.

“Oh, well I can wait.” He said smiling.

“That wont be necessary. Just tell me what you want with her.” I growled.

“Fine, since you aren’t into formalities.” He said, “I need her to talk to me. My daughter is looking for her.” He explained. “And if she finds her, she will kill Melinda.”

I kept an emotionless face but inside I was worried. I don’t know this kid, true, I thought, but I would trust her before I trusted Gabriel.

“I’ll let her know.” I said, about to turn around. He came closer and leaned over the counter.

“I suggest you do.” he said. “I’m looking out for my sister; my daughter is insane and will KILL HER if she has the chance.” he turned to leave the store, but looked at a vase. After a second, he turned around. “She’s here, isn’t she?”

“Who?” I asked.

“Melinda… and Kara.”

I said nothing.

“Well, if Melinda is here, then she should know- that girl is a demon; I trained her myself.” he smiled as he turned back to me. “And Kara, well, she is no longer my daughter. But, I bet you knew that already.”

“Get out.” I said.

“As you wish.” he said mockingly. “Good day.” He left the store.

After I was sure he was gone, I went to the back room to find Melinda and Kara. They were both sitting downstairs in two chairs.

“Is he gone?” Melinda asked. I nodded.

“What did he say?” Kara asked.

I sighed. “He says you’re a demon and was trained by him yourself. He also said that he knew you two were here.”

“We know; a ghost popped in while we were waiting.” Melinda explained. “Cloud tried to get the ghost out of here, and it worked, but not before the ghost found us.”

I nodded. “That would explain why he was looking at a vase before he said that you two were here. He must have been listening to what a ghost was telling him.”

Melinda nodded. “Gabriel is bad news.”

“Well, he isn’t any Archangel.” Kara said, which made Melinda smile.

“Where are you staying now?” I asked Kara.

“No where; I was planning on living on the streets until I found Mrs. Gordon.” she got up and bowed. “I was hoping that I could stay with you guys until this thing blows over. I can work in your shop for free if you want.”

Melinda looked at me with pleading eyes. I sighed, “Whatever you want to do, Mel.”

After some thought, she said, “Yea, okay. We have an extra room in the garage that you can take. Besides, you want to be trained by me, right?” Kara nodded. “Well, we can start the lessons while your in the house.”

“Thank you so much!” She said.

I hope this doesn’t backfire on us. I thought, because then Gabriel would have us exactly where he wants us.
