“Daddy!” Sam squealed, rushing into his father’s arms. John didn’t bother to ask Jim why his boys were awake at this early hour; he just hugged Sam for all he was worth.

“It’s Sammy’s birthday, Daddy,” Dean mumbled next to John, as his three-year-old brother buried his face into their father’s coat, oblivious.

“Why don’t you give him his present, then?” John suggested, pulling out the small toy he had purchased for this purpose. Dean smiled and handed the trinket to his brother, kissing him gently. John sighed and resolved not to be gone so long the next time.
