Chapter 3
The next morning was a Saturday, her squads day off. Four loud raps on her door awakened Amika. She opened her eyes to see Katsue barge in with a huge smile on her face. Something must really be exciting Kat today.
“Katsue…? What is it?”
Ami!!! You’ll never believe what just happened!”
Amika rubbed her eyes and got up. She started brushing her hair and getting dressed.
“What do you mean Kat? What happened?”
“…Saku…He asked me out!”
A blank stare came over Ami’s face. Her friend was still bouncing around with excitement; so she didn’t notice the expression on Ami’s face.
“Well I gotta run! I told him I would be there soon!”
Amika barely noticed as Kat flung herself out the door and down the stairs.
Slowly, Amika got up and left the house. She just walked aimlessly about for a while. She stopped in a large field, with green knee-high grass. She sat down with her legs curled up to her chest and her arms wrapped around her legs.
That was when the tears started falling down her cheeks.
Saku had asked Katsue out? No! What about her? Kat had no right to steal Saku from her! He had been her man since the academy! She had dibs on him first! Her hand grabbed a fistful of grass, how could Kat do this to her!?
“Hey! Who’s there?”
“Hey! Who’s there?”
Amika’s head shot up at the familiar voice. Kiba stood, holding Akamaru, right next to her with a puzzled expression on his face.
“Oh, Hey Amika! What are you doing out here alone? Hey! Are you crying?”
He said all in a rush. Ami’s face went red and she started brushing the tears away furiously.
“No! I’m not crying! Why would I be crying!?”
She said trying hard to keep the tears back. She noticed Kiba sit down next to her, the puzzled expression still in place.
“Hey, calm down. So…where’s Katsue? Aren’t you guys like, best friends or something?”
Amika head snapped forward. She refused to look at him. It was as if he knew what was going on, and was purposefully torturing her! Right now all Ami wanted was to hurt something, someone. And right now her only available target was the boy sitting next to her.
“Yeah, I heard she was going out with Etsuko.”
She tried hard to keep her voice under control, to keep the hurt from showing in her voice.
“What? She’s on a date?”
Kiba’s voice was furious. Yes, Amika had scored. Kiba was the standard overprotective older brother.
“Wait, aren’t you three on a team? They’re just leaving you behind? That’s not very nice…”
Oh god, why couldn’t she just punch him? Ami wasn’t in the mood for this. She clenched her hand into a fist at the mention of leaving her behind. This boy seemed to know just where to prod to get her to feel horrible.
But Kiba wasn’t as oblivious as he looked. He noticed the pain on her face almost instantly.
“Hey…you’re crying again…”
He said quickly brushing her tears away with his thumb.
At that moment Amika looked over at Kiba, their eyes meeting. Their eyes were locked on each others for what felt like hours when it was really minutes.
Ami wrenched her eyes away, an uncomfortable feeling in the pit of her stomach. She stood up, brushing the grass off of herself.
“I…I have to go.”
She said her voice sounding funny, a little off. What had just happened?
“Sure…see you around Amika.”
He said grinning in a very Kiba fashion. Maybe it was because they were siblings, and so much alike! Kiba was so much like his younger sister Katsue. Maybe that’s why she felt so uncomfortable staring into his eyes, yet so safe when he was around.
She sighed. She had almost forgotten all about the small Katsue and Sakuma problem. But that was soon brought to the surface of her mind when she walked past a ramen shop and saw them sitting there together laughing and holding hands. Ami stopped in her tracks and watched them for a little bit. They never noticed their teammate.
When Amika arrived home she quickly went to her room. She didn’t feel like talking to anyone, especially someone who would force her to go clean out the deer’s stable.
She threw herself onto her bed and rolled over onto her back. Today had certainly been surprising. From hearing and seeing her crush go out with her best friend, to meeting up with her best friends brother and learning a few things that she wished had stayed hidden.
She had no wish to know that Kiba liked her. But in that field, it had been plain in his eyes.
Oh my! Some drama! How could he! Saku was supposed to be a nice character! Ah well...it makes a more interesting story. I wonder what will happen? don't you?
