Alright, THIS is where it gets even MORE random. I'm warning you now.
Harry Potter belongs to J.K. Rowling. Deal.

Bellatrix braced herself. She wanted to cry, wanted the Dark Lord there with her when Potter killed her; but she also wanted to keep her dignity, so she closed her eyes and waited for the second word to come. She imagined herself dying a more spectacular death, or if she couldn’t have that, which she knew she couldn’t, Bellatrix moved on to imagine what He would do when he found her…

He would enter the Ministry through whatever way He fancied at the time and would happen through the Atrium. She imagined Him almost floating when he walked, as though His feet only brushed the ground every now and again. He would catch only a glimpse of her at first from behind the statues, but He would stop a moment and investigate. When He found his most trusted Death eater lying sprawled elegantly on the floor, He would let out a cry of anguish, and take her into his arms, and-

Bellatrix opened her eyes at the sudden release of pressure from her throat. She looked up to see Potter still hovering over her, a look of confusion on his face. She wasn’t dead yet. But why? He had every reason in the world to want her dead, and yet he’d not yet killed her. Bellatrix laughed at him.

“What’s wrong, Potter? Come on! Kill me! I killed him! I KILLED SIRIUS BLACK!” she cackled, unsure as to why she was trying to provoke him. He’d not killed her yet; why didn’t she just grab her wand and finish him?

-~-

What was wrong with him? Why had he not put an end to her miserable life already? Harry silently cursed himself as he stood, staring down at Bellatrix. There was some force willing him not to kill her, but why? For a moment, Harry thought that perhaps Voldemort had made his entrance already, without warning, while Harry stood looming over one of his Death Eaters, and had put him under the Imperius Curse.

-~-

I can’t do it,” Harry said finally, his voice barely above a whisper. He expected Bellatrix to have some sort of snide comeback, but she said nothing. Even with her earlier taunting he couldn’t bring himself to finish the curse and kill her.

“Afraid, are you Potter?” Bellatrix asked, smiling wickedly up at him. “Afraid dear ‘Professor Dumbledore’,” she said mockingly, “won’t like it if you use an Unforgiveable Curse?”

Harry backed away from Bellatrix, his extended arm falling to his side along with his wand. “I don’t want to be like you. I don’t want to kill anyone, I don’t want to torture people to insanity,” he said, thinking of Neville’s parents. “Especially my family.”

Bellatrix grabbed her wand and scrambled to her feet, now looming over Harry, dark and ominous like a storm cloud. “You’ll learn one day that family isn’t all it’s made out to be, Harry Potter. Families are full of lies, full of deceit… even you should know that,” Bellatrix said, her voice icy, bitterness clinging to each word that she spoke.

At just that moment, Remus Lupin (having fought alongside the Order for quite some time, he was finally letting his last living best friend’s death sink in) made his entrance, stunned to see Harry standing inches away from one of the most notorious of the Death Eaters, not to mention the same one that had just killed his friend. Harry heard footsteps and turned around in time to see Remus draw his wand and yell ‘Avada Kedavra’.

Without wasting a second, Harry conjured a protective shield to block himself and Bellatrix from the curse. He knew that it hadn’t been intended for him, but he also realized that he couldn’t let Remus kill Bellatrix… it just didn’t seem right. It annoyed Harry that he always had to think the way he did- Remus had done exactly what Harry hadn’t; why had he stopped him?

Remus stood completely dumbfounded in the background whilst he watched the exchange between Harry and the Death Eater.

“Go,” Harry said to Bellatrix, gesturing with his hand towards the many fireplaces that lined the walls.

She turned to walk away, but Harry, compelled by some subconscious thought, grabbed her arm and spun her around. Bellatrix immediately raised her wand, and Harry did the same. For a time the two just stared at each other, wands at the ready, waiting for the other to strike first, though neither did.

“What?” Bellatrix snapped, tired of Potter wasting her time when she could have been finishing off the rest of the Order of the Phoenix.

Harry paused for a long while, not sure that he wanted to say anything, and finding it strange that he’d pulled her back. “Nothing,” he said, completely confused as he watched Bellatrix stalk away.

She realized as she made her way out of the Ministry via Floo powder that she owed him… The stupid Potter brat had saved her life, and now she was in debt to him. Bellatrix sighed as she was engulfed by the green flames.
