Everything in Transit
Chapter Thirteen: Fairweather
The tide rolled in, not a breath in sight,
And this town went down like the moon at night,
These poor rooftops only go so high,
The volume of our bodies is causing the water to rise.
Bella Masen
Early Christmas morning, I awoke to Edward's lips inching up my neck. My eyes refused to open as my body woke up. I pulled out of Edward's arms and got halfway out of our bed when Edward's arm quickly locked around my waist and pulled me back against his chest. I groaned as he rolled on top of me and kissed my lips.
I gasped against his lips, the moment getting more heated as we kissed. We parted, panting for breath. He grinned crookedly and nuzzled his head in my neck. I knotted my fingers in his hair and took a deep breath.
"You will be the death of me," He warned, panting. I laughed and continued running my hands through his hair. "Merry Christmas, baby."
"You too," I mumbled aimlessly. "Shall we go downstairs?"
"Mmm, not yet. I want to stay like this for a little longer."
"Oh, come on, Edward. We can do this all afternoon; let's just get the gift-giving over with." Truth be told, I was excited to give Edward his presents this year.
"Are you alright, my Bella?" Edward teased, reaching his hand up and placing it on my forehead. I rolled my eyes at him. "You feel fine, but you don't sound like my wife!"
"Shut up," I groaned. "I'm just really excited about Christmas this year."
"Well, obviously," He jibed. I hit his chest lightly and sat up on the bed. I stretched and got out of bed. Edward sighed and got out of bed. We didn't bother changing – which meant Edward stayed shirtless. I stayed in my red and white flannel pajama bottoms and white tee shirt. The shirt was one of Emmett's old, old ones that I had stolen in high school.
Edward held his hand out for me and laced our fingers together. I made us breakfast and sat on his lap while we shared a plate. When we finished eating, we decided to open presents.
Edward loved the Kindle his mother got him. Our exchange went on and off. He gave me a present, I gave him a present. In addition to the picture frame he'd gotten me yesterday, he'd also gotten me new luggage and some stuff for my iPod and laptop. When we finished exchanging the gifts, he smiled sheepishly at me and pulled me onto his lap.
"I have two more gifts for you," He said quietly. "Here's the first." He placed a manila folder on my lap and instructed me to open it. I opened it gingerly and saw a packet of paper printed from the internet. On the top page, it gave details about a flight – to Ireland.
"Oh, Edward," I breathed. "This is so wonderful."
"I hope you don't mind it, love. I've wanted to take you there for a long, long time."
"It's perfect, Edward. But what's the next gift?"
"Ah, for that one, we need to go out."
"Should we get dressed?" Edward shook his head.
"No. It'll only take a few minutes."
"Where is this place, exactly?"
"Just a few miles from here." I sighed and put my boots on.

Edward opened my door for me and I stepped out. He had blindfolded me so I wouldn't guess about my gift. It was probably the most aggravating thing he's done – today. Edward knows how much I hate not having one sense. Prick. He wrapped his arm around my waist and helped me out of the car.
"C'mon, darlin'," He murmured, dragging me slightly. I followed him.
"Merry Christmas!" A cheerful voice chirped. "How can I help you today?"
"I'm Edward Masen – we're picking up something?" I could hear the anxiety in Edward's voice as the woman went through the details. Name, address, phone number…
"Just follow me," The overly happy woman announced. Edward tightened his arm around me and we walked together.
"Are you ever going to let me see?" I hissed. He chuckled.
"Probably not," He quipped. "Just be patient, love."
I growled slightly. A door opened, I was led through it. I took a deep breath. The air smelled weird. I couldn't place the exact name for it.
"Okay, sir, here we are!"
"I'm taking your blindfold off, alright?" Edward whispered in my ear. I nodded. His hands gently untied the knot around the back of my head. His lips pressed against the crown of my head as the blindfold fell forward. I caught it and brought my eyes up to my husband. He smiled and cocked his head towards whatever my Christmas gift was. My head turned slowly and zeroed in on an examination table where there was a blue blanket, a tennis ball, and a bowl of water. I looked at the lady who led us in the room and in her arms was a little ball of fluff. I looked at Edward, a smile starting to slide across my face.
Walking over to the woman, I held my arms out. She put the puppy in my arms and I cradled it. I petted its furry belly and looked towards Edward. He slowly crossed the room and wrapped an arm around my shoulder.
"Merry Christmas, baby," He murmured in my ear as his hand came down to pet the puppy's stomach. The puppy made a tiny growling noise and I melted.
"Can we go home?" I asked eagerly. Edward laughed and nodded.
"We have all of the things we need for her at home," Edward told me as we left a few minutes later. "What do you want to name her?"
"Scruffy," I blurted. Edward threw his head back and laughed.
"That's wonderful, baby!" He exclaimed. "Our little Scruffy."
***
It turned out that Scruffy was a shih-Tzu puppy. Her white fur had a little black spot on the back. She was absolutely adorable. She stumbled around our house and barked at Edward when he played his guitar. We laughed a lot at that.
Later that night, Edward and I lay on our couch together with Scruffy curled up at our feet. His arm was wrapped around me, his head resting on mine as he snored slightly. He'd fallen asleep while we watched It's a Wonderful Life. His contacts remained in his eyes. I ran my fingers through his hair and kissed his forehead. I was lucky to have him, lucky to share this marriage with him.
He stirred slightly at the feeling of my hands in his hair and threw his free arm around my waist, holding me in an askew hug. I snorted slightly and pinched his side to wake him up. His eyes flew open, his bright green eyes confused.
"Damn it, Bella, that hurt!" He exclaimed. I laughed and pinched him again, harder. "Bella."
"Edward," I mocked. He looked like he was going to lunge at me, but stopped. A slow grin spread across his face. Oh, no. He knows what the crooked grin does to me. His teeth glinted slightly.
"Oh, jeez," I murmured, completely dazzled. He was so attractive. His cheekbones and jaw were incredibly sharp. Speaking of his jaw, he hadn't shaved this morning and was beginning to form stubble. His eyes, bright and clear pools of green were focused on my face. His hair was messier than usual after sleeping for a while and having me run my fingers through it.
"Hmm?" He hummed. He unwrapped his arm from around my waist and picked up his acoustic guitar. He let me go completely as he began strumming notes out on the strings. He began playing a familiar song – my lullaby. He had never, in our five year relationship played my song on his guitar. I leaned my body against his, savoring the music. The song came to an end but flowed into an acoustic version of 'Such Great Heights' by The Postal Service.
Edward's soft, dulcet voice sang out the familiar words and Scruffy's little head snapped up, confused. She pulled herself closer to me, snuggling into my side. I petted her while Edward sang, his voice lulling her into a deep sleep.
The song ended; he began playing "I Will Follow You Into the Dark" by Death Cab for Cutie. Our wedding song. I grinned at him as he played and sang.
"Thank you, Edward," I said when he finished serenading me. "But we're married, now, you don't have to serenade me to get you into your bed."
Edward broke out into laughter as he put his guitar back in its case. Standing before me, he held his hand out. I pulled myself up, gripping his forearm tightly. I glanced at the clock, it was nearly two AM. We had been up fairly early that morning. I picked up Scruffy hurriedly as Edward dragged me upstairs. I put the puppy on the bed we had designated for her in the corner of our bedroom.
Edward pulled my body against his with a fiery kiss. He pulled me up off of the floor and brought me to our bed.

"I don't wanna go to work," Edward pouted one morning a few days after Christmas. He was being childish because he had to go into work for a few hours to get some stuff done.
"You have to," I muttered, "Pay the bills and all that crap…" My voice was unconvincing as Edward ran his fingers down my back. I shivered and turned on my back. He groaned.
"You're so tempting," He breathed, pressing his lips against mine.
"I'm wearing a shirt, Edward!" I protested. He chuckled lightly and kissed me again.
"You're wearing my shirt," He muttered. "That's just not fair."
He resumed his pouting as he hauled his body out of the bed and walked towards the closet. He disappeared momentarily, but emerged a second later. Classic Edward, he was clad in a pair of jeans that fit him perfectly, a black long sleeve t-shirt, and a long sleeve flannel shirt that was haphazardly buttoned.
He smirked at me and wandered into the bathroom to brush his teeth. He refused to shave or dress nicely when he was forced to go into the office. Not that anyone in his office remotely cared. They all dressed like Edward.
"Classy," I teased as he appeared a few minutes later. He rolled his eyes and made his way over to my side of the bed. He took my face in his hands, gently brushing my hair out of my face. He kissed me softly yet urgently.
"I love you. I have my phone with me."
"Love you, too," I breathed. "Have fun!"
He sighed, kissed me once more, and was gone.
The moment Edward walked out of the room, Scruffy ran to the side of the bed, trying to jump up beside me. I smiled at her cuteness, scooped her up, and placed her beside me on the bed. I lay back, letting my thoughts relax as I drifted into a light sleep.
"Baby," a voice said, "Wake up now."
"Mmm," I groaned. "No."
"Please, Bella," The voice pleaded. "I want to see those beautiful brown eyes. Come on, darlin'."
Wait. I recognized that voice. "Edward!" I cried, prying my eyes open and leaping from bed. My arms wrapped around his neck in a vice. He laughed and wrapped his arms around my waist.
Taking a deep breath, I released him. "What time is it?"
"It's almost noon. Can you make me food?"
"Uh, no."
"Why?" He complained, jutting out his bottom lip. It would've looked adorable if I pissed off at him now. I pushed away from him and hopped off the bed. He followed me like a puppy.
"Edward, you can make your own food."
"But it's so much better when you make it!" He protested.
"I'm not here so you can tell me to make you food when you're hungry!"
"I'm sorry, Bella," He murmured sincerely, grabbing my hands in his and kissing my knuckles. "I don't mean to sound so demanding."
I let out a low hiss of breath. He smiled at me, trying to dazzle me into forgiveness. It was working.
"I love you, Bella," He told me, hesitantly wrapping his arms around my body. "I will make us both lunch and then I will let you do whatever you want for the rest of our lives. Okay?"
I sighed, smiling a little. This was an argument we'd gotten in a thousand times. It wasn't even a serious issue between us. "Okay," I finally conceded.
