September 4th, 1993

Hermione, Harry, and Ron walked out of Gryffindor Tower with their Defense against the Dark Arts books. Today was their first lesson with Mad-Eye Moody and couldn’t begin to describe the excitement they and their classmates were feeling towards this lesson. Hermione took her seat and got out her book rereading the first chapter when Alastor Moody entered the classroom.

“Put your books away, you won’t need them,” he told his class. The class did as instructed as Moody took role-call. “Now I’m only here for a year, and it’s because Dumbledore asked me, that’s all, the end of story. Now your past teacher did do much on creatures, monsters, and Defensive Arts against them but you are all far behind on curses. So that is what you will be learning this term. You need to put that away Miss Brown while I’m talking!” Lavender jumped and put away her two way mirror.

“The Ministry may not approve of me showing you these illegal curses, but Dumbledore believes you all can cope and I say the sooner the better of learning how to defend yourself, so let’s begin. Who can tell me what the Unforgivable Curses are and why they are Unforgivable?”

Hermione raised her hand, “Yes, Miss… you go by Granger or McGonagall or Dumbledore?”

“McGonagall, Sir, but they are Unforgivable because they are just that because they are very immoral Sir.” Hermione answered though a bit shocked he asked her about her last name.

“Excellent and it would earn anyone who uses the curses a one way ticket to Azkaban!” Moody said writing on the chalk board and then turning, “Mr. Weasley, stand. Give us a curse.”

“Um…well my dad did tell me about one, the Imperious Curse.” Ron said a bit squeaky and shaking with fear.

“Yes, well your father would know all about that and it gave the Ministry real problems.” Moody said turning around grabbing a spider and enlarging it, “IMPERIO!”

The spider began to jump and dance around the classroom with the students roaring with laughter as they watched the spider do “tricks” for them.

“Clever lil thing isn’t she?! Now what should I have her do next? Throw herself out the window?” The laughter stopped instantly, “Drown herself?” Moody summoned the spider back to him and into his hand shrinking it back to its regular size. “Scores of witches and wizards swore to the Ministry that they only did You-Know-Who’s bidding because they were under the influence of the Imperious Curse. But here’s the rub how do we sort out the liars?”

The class stood in stun silence for a few moments when Moody cleared his throat, “This is why I’m showing you these curses, because you need to know what you’re up against and prepare yourselves. CONSTANT VIGILIENCE!” The class jumped out of their seats.

Neville raised his hand, “Yes?” Moody asked.

“There’s the Cruciatus Curse, Sir.”

“Correct! Come here boy, come on take a look, CRUCIO!” The class watched in horror as the spider shrieked and twitched in pain. Neville stood stone still turning as white as the moon while his fists clenching closed tightly.

“Stop it, please! It’s bothering him please stop!” Hermione exclaimed. Moody turned around and stopped the curse when he saw Hermione and then noticing Neville’s expression; he cleared his throat and picked up the spider.

“Please give us the last curse Miss McGonagall.” He asked in a quiet hush tone.

Hermione sat staring at the spider then turned her eyes toward Professor Moody, finally taking a glance at Harry she turned back to the spider and picked up her wand. “AVADA KEDAVRA!”

---

“You can do the Killing Curse?” Ron practically pounced on Hermione when they got out of the lesson.

“Yes I can do it, Ronald. Do I like knowing how to do it? No.” Hermione said walking by Neville and stopping. “Neville are you alright?”

“Huh? … Oh yeah, great lesson, wonder what’s for dinner? You know? Oh well I better get to lesson, I mean dinner.” Before Neville could leave Professor Moody caught up with him and led him to his office.

Transfiguration

“Neville hasn’t returned yet from Moody’s office.” Harry whispered to Ron as they sat in the assigned seats.

“Well he was still a bit out of it wasn’t he?” Ron answered, “I mean we have dinner after Transfigurations and he kept going on about dinner, and his eyes were all spacey. Susan Bones said she saw Moody take him to the Hospital Wing, but he was carrying a book with him, must have got it from Moody.”

Hermione sat reading her Transfigurations Book; she hasn’t spoken much since Defense against the Dark Arts either. She couldn’t explain it, but something about Professor Moody seems a bit off. She met him a long time ago when she was about five years old and would see him whenever he would come by for a visit but he now seems different then when he would visit her and her family.

She also noticed that her classmates are looking at her in a bit of awe. Hermione sort of expected that once people found out who her parents are they would look at her that way, but now they are in awe of her power, just because she could do an Unforgivable Curse.

Professor McGonagall walked briskly to the front of her class, “Welcome back now today we will start with a review, which you will all transfigure these items, which you all should remember and recognize from last year’s lessons. The instructions are on the black board. This activity will give me an idea where everyone is at and where we need to start for this year.”

The students read the chalk board and walked up to gather the items or animals they would need to transfigure. After about an hour of working on their transfiguring Professor McGonagall called for a halt, “I see I have my work ahead of me with you lot. Next lesson we will begin on our new subjects for the year I suggest you read chapter 1 and write a one page essay.” The classes nodded their understanding and walked out once the bell signaled the end of class. “Miss McGonagall, stay behind please.”

Hermione sighed and stopped before exiting the classroom. “Yes Mum?”

“What’s wrong you seem quiet?” Minerva asked holding onto her daughter’s hand and leading her to sit in the desk.

“Professor Moody showed us the Unforgivable Curses…and….”

“Yes?” Minerva prompted.

“I performed Avada Kedavra,” Hermione whispered.

Minerva takes her daughter in her arms and holds her close, “Shush Darling, shush…I’m here, I’m here.”
