Aloha E Komo Mai
A gentle breeze swept over the small island of Kauai as the orangish-red orb of which everyone had grown accustom to calling the sun began to creep up from behind the darkness of the previous night. It was now dawn and all the inhabitants of the peaceful town of Hanapepe were sound asleep in their beds inside each of their current place of residences…that is save for one slender young man who was in his mid teens who was wearing a faded pair of denim blue jeans and a maroon t-shirt which displayed three electric guitars which all connected at some point to form the shape of a “W” in the center. His alias was Shawn Avery; he was currently fourteen years of age, and he stood fully awake in his room with only the faint illumination of his navy blue book light to guide him through his room and out of his humble and abode. His father Robert was a public defender at one of the few law firms on the island and his mother Debra was an assistant to the mayor Jason Griscausky so both of them worked long hours so he was able to sneak out in the early mornings without them noticing and do one of his two favorite things in the entire world…surf.
He had enjoyed surfing ever since he was a young boy, mostly because of the feeling of ocean breeze up against him as he rode every single wave. But it had other attributes such as the amount of exercise a man would get just from one hour of surfing and also the calming sensation that washed over him whenever he would come out to the beach, it made him finally comprehend why so many tourists came here three hundred and sixty-five days of the year. Whenever he was stressed out by school or any other stressful situation in which he seemed to find himself in he came to the small beach which lay close by to his house and within minutes he was as lackadaisical as a human being could be…when he surfed, it was as if no issue in the world could hinder him.
He first gathered up his shoes and his blue and black wetsuit which he had laid out on the floor bedside the night before so he wouldn’t wake up his now unconscious parents with attempting to get them out in the morning. He then continued onward and started to make his way towards the front door. Once he finally reached the door he turned the golden brass handle and proceeded to walk through the doorway and started out into the street. He had been doing this for such a long duration of time that it started to run like clockwork; each and every day he would get up at around five o’clock and change into his wetsuit before heading down to the beach and renting a surfboard for a couple bucks before heading into the water to surf for a few hours before having to head back home to see his mother and father off before they left for their places of employment. Sometimes he would have some of his friends come to join him in his surf as he had told them about how great an experience it was and they wanted to see if he was telling them the truth.
It was summer now and he had often found himself with nothing much to do during the day while his mother and father had to work, although he did manage to fill a few hours a day watching a television series entitled ‘Lilo and Stitch: The Series’ which was a television adaptation of his favorite movie ‘Lilo and Stitch’ which came out a year or so ago. It told the tale of a lonely Hawaiian girl named Lilo Pelakai and her alien companion and friend simply known as Stitch who had befriended her in a prior movie. The series then went on to further tell of their ongoing adventures trying to catch and rescue members of Stitch’s family from deadly foes which had ensnared them. He loved it despite the embarrassment of it because it displayed a message which people could highly profit from in the world in which he lived in unlike other shows which were designed only to entertain viewers.
It was around ten minutes later that he finally managed to reach his final destination and walked over towards an old wooden rental shop which had just opened up recently and saw the groggy, slender proprietor of the shop whose eyes gave away that he was most likely heavily sleep deprived and was nursing a hangover from the night before. His name was Rick Burton; he was wearing a baby blue shirt which bore white flowers on it all throughout the front and back with a pair of grey shorts, and he and Shawn had in a way become close friends ever since he had started to make his surfs a regular occurrence. Shawn walked up to the counter where Rick saw him and gave a weak smile before starting to greet him in an almost monotonous tone of voice.
Rick: “Hey man, the usual I presume.”
Shawn: “Sure man, what happened to you last night?”
Rick: “All I got to say is never party all night and think a red bull is the solution man.”
Shawn: “Take care of yourself man.”
From what he knew of the man Rick was a college kid that had been there for the summer who wanted to know personally what it was like to enjoy oneself too much in every way possible, and for that he was probably be in a lot of trouble someday. But despite him not being the smartest when it came to common sense he was a good friend to have as he always tried to lighten the situation however dark. He handed Shawn the surfboard and he quickly compensated Rick for the board before starting down towards the shoreline to wait and see whether or not a friend of his was to come and join him. He waited a good twenty minutes before he dismissed their absence as of no consequence and began to paddle out into the water. He went almost seven feet in before he quickly dipped his whole body in the water to familiarize his body with the ocean’s water temperature before he pressed on a little while longer before he stopped at a reasonable place in which to watch for a decent wave.
Shawn had known nothing of what was to befall him that early morning at the beach, but what would occur that day would transform him into a better individual for the rest of his life. For from this upcoming experience he would gain a new understand for what it means to be a part of a family and how to be a true friend while fighting for what you believe in all at the same instance. If someone would have informed him of what was to happen to him he would have thought them insane but a day or so later he finally realized what had happened…but a day too late.
He had only been watching the waves crash against the dark shoreline for a short while when he saw a wave begin to form about a mile off of the shoreline which he could easily estimate from its distance that it was bound to grow to an enormous size in comparison to others he had seen He took one brief glance at the seemingly “larger than life” wave and concluded that maybe riding it wasn’t the smartest course of action even for a skilled surfer like himself but strange enough some part of him longed to take the challenge and not miss out on a once in a lifetime opportunity. He wasn’t right about much in his life but that very day at the beach when he sensed that there was something irregular about that gigantic wave I which he was peering at…he was never more accurate about anything in his whole life.
Slowly but surly he started to paddle out towards the wave which at the moment had grown to about fifty feet in actual height and continued to paddle against the ocean’s strong current and gradually started to climb up the dense wall of oxygen and hydrogen that was the wave. He persisted, inch after inch and meter after meter he climbed until he reached about five feet from the top and started to try and balance himself on his board and soon enough he was standing steady. Then once he was convinced he was balanced perfectly on his board he closed his eyes as the wind blew over him and he began to be in a state of complete and total relaxation just like all those mornings prior. But he was soon interrupted when he began to feel his leg grow weak and start to loose his balance, causing him stumble over his board and into the rock infested waters beneath him. He was soon taken away by the violent and aggressive current which made his body jerk back and forth as it finally managed to crash against the rocky shoreline. Shawn distinctively remembered every shift of motion in which his body made and if not for being in water he most probably had a severe case of whiplash, but when his head slammed into a stray rock at the bottom of the ocean an excruciating amount of pain went through his head and his whole world went black.
Well, there's chapter one for you guys. I 'm sorry it's a bit short but i promise it'll be longer.
