Who's Afraid of the Doctor?
Chapter 6 - Surgery
Once everyone made it back to Kento's room, Kento was put back into his bed. All five of the others sat around him, though a little distant to give the doctors some space.
Both the doctors and nurses put on their masks and pulled on their gloves. Doctor Saito pulled in a couple of large tanks. But before Kento could take his first dose of anesthetic, he had to be looked over by Yuko first. She took his temperature and his blood pressure and listened to his heart, the whole time she was gentle.
When that was done Kento asked, "What happens now?"
"Now we go for the first dose of anesthetic," replied Doctor Kimura.
"Remind me what is that?" Kento asked, more nervously this time.
"It's just a special drug that we doctors use to give patients before surgery," Doctor Saito explained, "It makes you sleepy and it numbs the nervous system, that's all."
"I knew that," said Kento.
Doctor Kimura chuckled before picking up a small gas mask.
"Okay ya ready?"
Kento sighed and nodded, and reluctantly leaned forward so the doctor could put the mask on.
Kento was told to take slow deep breaths for a couple of minutes. He looked down so everyone would quit looking at him. Slowly, the gas began to take effect. Kento's vision blurred slightly, his head began to feel numb, and he could feel his heart slow down with ease.
Before he knew it, the mask was taken off of his face. He let his head fall against his pillow.
"How do you feel?" Doctor Kimura asked.
"I feel a little, dizzy," Kento replied, "Kind of light-headed."
Doctor Kimura, "Good, that means it's working." The nurses then pulled back two levers on the side of Kento's bed to make it movable.
"Okay we're all ready to go," said Saori.
Kento smiled at his friends and said, "I'll see you when I get back."
"Wait," said Ayana. She then went over to Kento, and gave him a little kiss on the cheek. "Be good Kento." She smiled and ruffled his hair.
Kento's smile grew bigger. "I'll catch ya later."
"How long might it take?" Cye asked.
"It might be about an hour before he wakes up," Saori replied, "We'll come get you when he's done."
Kento was then rolled slowly out of his room and into the hall, with every minute that passed, he felt sleepier and sleepier, and before he knew it, he was in an operating room.
On his right were trays holding operating tools, and on his left was a heart-rate and breathing monitor, like the ones he saw on medical t.v. shows.
"Hold still," said Saori. She put small stickers on his chest, which were hooked up to the monitor. Beeping noises then began to fill the room. Saori then put a breathing apparatus into Kento's nose to help him breath throughout.
Just then, the lights in the room were dimmed, until only a big light in the center of the ceiling was on. On his right were the shadows of Doctor Kimura and Doctor Saito.
"Okay Kento, we're going to put you to sleep now," said Doctor Kimura.
"Okay," Kento rasped.
Doctor Saito dabbed his wrist with a numbing substance before he stuck in a needle containing anesthetic. He then put tape around his wrist so the needle would stay in.
At that point, Kento's vision became as blurry as ever. Part of him was telling him to stay awake, but the other part of him just wanted to go to sleep.
"Just relax Kento," said Doctor Kimura, "It'll be over soon."
And that was the last thing he remembered before he closed his eyes, and fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.
