The plane ride felt like days when it was only a few hours. He was sitting in his seat looking out the window as they took off. He could see her building and he felt a tear roll down his cheek. He knew leaving her was stupid but he didn’t think she would ever be able to forgive him. And he could stick around and watch as she gave up on him. Helena was right. The ring disaster was an omen and he knew that he couldn’t stand to see her hurt, so here he was sitting on a plane going to Detroit. He was going to stay with Sam and hopefully be a family again.
As the plane started his decent he got a little nervous. He knew Sam would be happy but he didn’t want Jamie to think he wanted to get back together with her. He got up when he was told to and he got his bags and got a taxi to take him to Sam’s school. When he got there he smiled and paid the cab driver and went inside. He went up to the front desk.
“Hi I am here to pick up my son.” Larry said to the secretary.
“Name?” She asked looking at him.
“Sam Paul.” Larry said smiling.
“Do you have permission from his mother to pick him up?” The lady asked seriously.
“I’m his father.” Larry said getting out his ID and showing it to her. She nodded and called him down.
Sam’s Classroom
“Ok he will be right down.” Sam’s teacher said hanging up the phone.
“Sam your dad is here to pick you up.” His teacher said to him. Sam’s eyes lit up and he jumped up and got his stuff and ran to the front office.
“DAD!” He yelled jumping in Larry’s arms.
“Hey buddy.” Larry said smiling and spinning him around. “Do you want to go surprise mom?” Larry asked nicely, even though he didn’t want to see Jamie yet, he knew Sam would like it.
“Yeah! Where’s Ally?” Sam asked looking around for her.
“She couldn’t come buddy but she did tell me to say hi.” Larry lied. He got Sam’s bag and him and they walked over to Jamie’s office, which was a few blocks away.
“Jamie, Sam is here.” Her secretary told her.
“What…” She said walking out to find Larry and Sam right there.
“Larry?” She asked shocked.
“Hey mom, dad came and picked me up from school and we wanted to surprise you!” Sam said smiling. “Ally couldn’t come though.” Sam said sadly.
Jamie looked at Larry and saw the pain in his eyes when Sam said that. She knew she needed to talk to him so she asked Sam to wait outside while they talked.
“What happened?” Jamie asked as soon as she closed the door.
“It doesn’t matter.” Larry said not wanting to talk about it.
“What happened Larry?” She asked more forcefully.
“I tried to propose and it got messed up…stupid waiter…and I saw it as an omen so I left. She is still in Boston.” He said sadly. “So don’t worry you get what you want. “No more Ally we can be a family again.” He said harshly.
“No Ally?” A voice said from behind them. Sam had opened the door without either one of them noticing.
“Buddy…” Larry tried but he was cut off.
“But…Ally…I liked Ally.” Sam said running out the door.
“Sam!” Larry said running after him. He looked everywhere and finally found him in a corner of the office that was pretty well hidden.
“You lied…you said you loved Ally…but you left her!” Sam said crying.
“Listen buddy…it just didn’t work out…I’m sorry.” Larry said hugging Sam. After a while they walked out. They met Jamie and they went to the house so Larry could put his stuff there. They went out to dinner and started being a family again.
Two years later
Ally hated Richard Fish. She hated him more than any other person she had ever met. They had a client in Detroit and of course he had to send her. He knew that she didn’t want to go and even after much protest he sent her and Ling. That is another thing. Her and Ling? Come on they fight like animals whenever they are paired together. So there she sat on the plane that was going to land in Detroit in 15 minutes. She hadn’t said a word the whole flight and to tell you the truth Ling didn’t mind. She just sat next to her and read some book she had found at the book store.
When they landed they headed straight to where they were meeting the client. He had been a long time friend of Richard’s so he promised he would send people to help. When they got there they were led to a conference room where their client was waiting.
“Mr. Andrews I am Ally Mcbeal and this is Ling. We are going to be your lawyers.”Ally said not very enthusiastically. They sat down and for the next hour they talked about why he was being sued and what they were going to do to fix it. When it was done Ally and Ling were tired, pissed off, and wanted to get drunk so they found a local bar. It was nothing like theirs but it sold alcohol and so they were happy. The bar had a small piano and dance floor, but it wasn’t as friendly as the one in Boston. They sat there most of the night listening to music and drinking. At some point Ally realized that she had to pee, so she went to the bathroom. She was walking out when she heard a voice that she had missed for the past two years.
“This is for someone I haven’t seen in a while, but someone I will always love.” Then the man started playing her song.
Chances are you'll find me
Somewhere on your road tonight
Seems I always end up driving by
Ever since I've known you
It just seems you're on my way
All the rules of logic don't apply
I long to see you in the night
Be with you 'til morning light
I remember clearly how you looked
The night we met
I recall your laughter and your smile
I remember how you made me
Feel so at ease
I remember all your grace, your style
And now you're all I long to see
You've come to mean so much to me
Chances are I'll see you
Somewhere in my dreams tonight
You'll be smiling like the night we met
Chances are I'll hold you and I'll offer
All I have
You're the only one I can't forget
Baby you're the best, I've ever met
And I'll be dreaming of the future
And hoping you'll be by my side
And in the morning I'll be longing
For the night, for the night
Chances are I'll see you
Somewhere in my dreams tonight
You'll be smiling like the night we me.
Chances are I'll hold you and I'll offer
All I have
You're the only one I can't forget
Baby you're the best I've ever met
The bar cheered when he finished and Ally had tears in her eyes. Ling was looking right at her. Then she walked over, but Larry beat her to Ling. He didn’t even notice Larry behind him.
“Ling…what are you doing here?” He asked shocked.
“Case.” She said simply.
“Wait are you Mr. Andrews lawyer from out of town?” He asked shocked.
“Yeah why?” She asked fiercely.
“I am against you.” He said rolling his eyes.”How’s Ally?” He asked quickly thinking of her.
“Not good, you broke her heart. She hasn’t let anyone in since you.” Ling said while ignoring Ally’s silent protest.
“I know I screwed up. But I couldn’t see her hurt.” He said frowning. “Just tell her I say hi I have to get home to my son.” He finished frowning.
“I will. Tell the little home wrecker we at Cage and Fish say hi.” She said sarcastically. Larry ignored her and turned and ran into the person standing behind him.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t see you…” Larry said looking up and noticing Ally for the first time. “Ally…” He said shocked. He turned to Ling who just shrugged.
“You couldn’t stand to see me hurt, yet you are the reason it happened…” She said before running out. Ling pushed passed Larry and followed her.
“Ally…I can’t believe I am being nice, but are you ok? Are you going to be able to handle this case?” Ling asked actually serious.
“I can…I have to beat him so I can put him in my past.” Ally responded as they reached the hotel.
That night Ally didn’t sleep at all. She could only think of Larry singing the song and of what he said to Ling. So not to her surprise the next morning came quickly, and that meant it was time for court.
When they got to the court they met their client and headed in to where Larry and his client were sitting. He was about to go over and talk to her but the judge came in and the trial started.
“So you are telling me you didn’t fire Ms. Jacobs because she was over weight?” Larry asked Andrews forcefully.
“No I did not.” He answered seriously.
“Then why?” Larry asked.
“Because she tried to seduce one of the lawyers in the office. It is against the rules to date a colleague. We think that if you date someone in the firm then you will get distracted.” He said angrily.
“Who did she try and seduce?” Larry asked.
“Me.” Andrews responded. Larry told the judge and he was finished.
“Ms. Jacobs, why do you believe that Mr. Andrews fired you?” Ally asked calmly.
“He had told me the week before that he thought I was fat, and then when I went in to ask if he wanted to get a drink he said the same thing and then fired me.” Jacobs said letting fake tears roll down her eyes.
“But why did you ask him to get a drink with you when one you knew he was married and two you knew it was against the rules?” Ally asked forcefully.
“I just wanted to get to know him…” She said lying very poorly.
“No more questions.” Ally said going to sit down without even looking at Larry.
“Try to come to a settlement tomorrow, if not we come back in two days at noon.” The judge said ending the case for today. Ally and Ling said bye to their client for now and walked out. Larry tried to talk to her, but was interrupted, but not by her…
“Ally!” Sam yelled running at her. She smiled and picked the boy up.
“Sam…how are you buddy…you have gotten big.” She said hugging him.
“What are you doing here?” He asked smiling. She smiled and told him. She then looked up and saw a very shocked Jamie walking towards them. Jamie came right up to Larry and kissed him. Ally rolled her eyes, and turned away. She didn’t see Larry push her off him but she didn’t care anyway. She kept talking to Sam, until Jamie took him and went to go get some lunch. Larry stayed behind.
“Ally…” He said seriously. Ling rolled her eyes and went back to the hotel leaving them alone.
She turned towards him with a pissed off ‘I don’t care what you have to say’ look on her face.
“I’m sorry.” He said. It was all he could think about.
“Sorry for what Larry? Breaking my heart or leaving me with a fucking note!” She yelled at him.”
“For everything! Ally, you have to understand…I didn’t want to leave, but I had to. Helena…” This time she cut him off.
“Helena what? You decide you blow off lunch with me so you could have a secret lunch with your ex-wife!” She yelled.
“Ex…ALLY…that is the point. She is my EX wife. She and I are still friends and I needed someone to talk to.” He said trying to defend himself.
“And you couldn’t talk to me Larry? You know your girlfriend!” She said still yelling at him. “What in the hell could you talk to her about and not me?” She asked.
“This!” He said pulling out the ring. She shut up pretty quickly. “That night at the restaurant…I got the waiter to put the ring in your cobbler, I watched you eat it bite after bite, but nothing happened. He gave you the wrong damn cobbler, and I took it as an omen, so I needed to talk to Helena. That is why I had lunch with her. I needed to know what to do.” He said closing his eyes and taking a deep breath.
“Why didn’t you tell me?” She asked quieting down.
“I…I couldn’t…I thought you would laugh and say no.” He said frowning.
“We do need to talk about this…after the trial.” She said seriously. He nodded.
“Do you and Ling want to have dinner with Sam Jamie and I?” He asked.
She just gave him a look. “True it is Ling…” He said smiling slightly.
“No…Jamie.” She said.
“Nothing is happening with us. I promise. I will even sit next to you. Sam would love it.” He said smiling.
“Ah…using your son as bait…” She started. “I can’t say for Ling, but I want to spend time with Sam.” She said also smiling. He nodded and they headed out, with plans to meet later at a restaurant that Sam liked.
“But Ally…that means being polite to people…I hate being nice and polite.” Ling said protesting.
“You don’t have to go.” Ally said getting dressed.
“No…I’ll go.” She said rolling her eyes. They left half and hour later and arrived at the restaurant on time. They walked in and went to sit with Larry, Sam, and Jamie. Ling growled at Jamie, and Jamie did the same for Ally when Larry got up and hugged her. So did Sam. Then she sat between the two of them.
They ate and talked. Sam was one of the main ones to talk but no one minded except Ling, but then again it was Ling. When Larry paid the check they got up and just started walking. Sam insisted that they get Ice Cream. So they did. Jamie hadn’t spoken much the whole night but her face showed that she was not at all happy seeing Larry and Sam laughing and talking with Ally. When they got to her hotel they said their goodbyes and Ally hugged Sam, and Larry. Ling and Ally then walked into the hotel.
“That was the most boring night of my life. Does that kid ever shut up?” She asked referring to Sam. Ally just laughed at her. They were going to have an interesting day tomorrow. So they went to sleep really early.
Larry’s House with Jamie and Sam
“Did you have fun buddy?” Larry asked Sam. Sam nodded, but you could tell he was tired so he said goodnight to his parents and went to bed.
“I don’t like her being around Sam.” Jamie said once he was out of ear-shot.
“Well too bad. I told her I was going to propose.” He said watching the anger build on her face.
“What? Do you want to leave Sam again so you can marry some slut?” Jamie yelled.
Larry was shocked by her words. “Get out…of my house…I won’t leave Sam and she is not some slut! I LOVE HER!” Larry yelled kicking her out of his house. He closed the door and saw Sam standing in the hallway.
“Sam…” Larry didn’t know what to say.
“Promise you won’t leave.” He said quietly.
“I promise buddy.” Larry said hugging him. They then went to bed silently.
Next Day
“Mr. Andrews, Ms. Mcbeal, Ms. Woo.” Larry said walking into the conference room where they were all waiting.
“Mr. Paul, Ms. Jacobs.” Ally said suppressing a smile at Larry.
“Let’s start shall we.” Larry said. Ally nodded and the discussion started. They talked for three hours before coming to an agreement. They would give Ms. Jacobs a severance package until she got a new job, and she would not stick with the charges. Larry, Ally, and Ling all sighed as the two clients left. They filed the paper and were done with the case.
“The case is over?” Ling asked wanting to make sure she wasn’t just dreaming. Both Larry and Ally nodded and she smiled and walked out of the room.
“It is after the case…” He said referring to their previous conversation about needing to talk.
“Let’s go to the bar.” She said as they stood at the elevators. He agreed and they walked there together. When they got there they ordered drinks and started talking.
“I’m sorry I left with a note…you know I hate goodbyes.” He started.
“But why? You could have told me.” She said seriously. He just shrugged.
“Why were you carrying it around anyway.” She asked.
“Were?” He said pulling it out. “I carry it around everywhere I go. It makes me feel like I still have a part of you with me.” He said blushing slightly.
“I have to leave tomorrow.” She said frowning.
“I know…” He said trying to forget that little detail. They just sat and talked for hours until they knew they had to head to their separate housing. He walked her to her hotel.
“Will I see you tomorrow before you leave?” He asked.
“I thought you hated goodbyes.” She said seriously.
“I won’t say goodbye.” He responded. She smiled slightly and nodded. She hugged him and walked inside. She knew that leaving him would be hard, but she couldn’t move here. Her life was in Boston. She walked into the room to find Ling asleep. She laughed quietly. She went to asleep.
The next day she woke up and left to go see Larry. She found out where his office was and went over. She knocked on the door and he smiled when he saw her. She walked over and sat down.
“When is your flight?” He asked after a while.
“I have to be there in half an hour” she said frowning. She stood up, as did he. He walked over to her and hugged her.
“I’m going to miss you.” He said seriously. She started to cry.
“Hopefully I’ll see you soon.” She said wiping away her tears. He kissed her on the cheek and she left. She cried while she and Ling waited for their flight. When they boarded and took off she watched as the city slowly disappeared. When they landed she didn’t talk at all. They got their things and headed back to the office. When they got there she walked over to Elaine’s desk and asked for messages.
“No one called that was important. Just clients than John, Nell, and Richard handled. Oh and your mother.” She said. Ally just rolled her eyes and walked into her office.
“Um…excuse me but get out of my office whoever you are.” Ally said to the person who was sitting in her chair. She could only see their head but she wasn’t having a good day and she didn’t want to have to put up with any crap. The person turned around and smiled.
“Hi…I need a lawyer.” The man said.
“Larry…” She said shocked. “How did you beat me?” She asked.
“One way flight, first cab, and a really good advantage.” He said standing up. He looked in the corner and Ally followed his gaze. That is when Sam ran out and hugged her. She smiled and hugged him back. Ally looked at Larry and smiled.
“I told Jamie that I was coming back and that I was taking Sam…she threw a fit, but I told her that she could come with us or stay there. Sadly she came but she is working right outside of town so you wont see her unless necessary.” Larry said walking over to her. Sam looked up and smiled. He knew what was about to happen and so he walked out.
“I love you Ally Mcbeal, and two years away from you was too long…marry me?” He said pulling out the ring for a reason this time. Elaine, Mark, Ling, Richard, Mark, John, and Sam were all listening at the door. She was shocked. She didn’t know what to say. Well she knew what to say but she just couldn’t speak. So she nodded vigorously, and smiled. He smiled also and kissed her for the first time in two years. He put the ring on her and Sam ran in. He joined on in the hug. Larry kissed Ally again. Everyone in the office cheered which made Ally blush.
Sam, Ally, and Larry all walked over to what was his old office. His old associate was still there. Ally had faced her a few times, but she wasn’t well known. She smiled at Larry when he came in. After a few minutes of talking he got his old office back. They walked in and smiled. This was the start of something new and Larry actually had a good feeling about it. He had his son, his girl, and his job. Life couldn’t get better.
Two Months Later
“Do you Larry Paul take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?” The priest asked.
“I do.” He responded smiling at her.
“And do you Ally Mcbeal take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?” He asked.
“I do.” She said crying a little.
“Than by the powers vested in me by the state of Massachusetts and God, I now pronounce you man and wife you may kiss the bride.” The priest finished. Larry leaned in and kissed her hard. Everyone cheered and they both couldn’t stop smiling.
They walked down the aisle past their friends and family and into their new life together forever.
