Chapter 1

Kyra stared out the window. The sky was growing dark. Much like her thoughts. She had been stuck in this orphanage for so long. She had been promised long ago that her parents would return, but they never did.

That had been ten years ago. She had turned seven years old on that day. And this day, ten years later, would be the day she turned seventeen. She was one year away from being legally old enough to be on her own. But when she was old enough to leave, what would she do? Where would she go?

I need to get out of here! she thought suddenly. I’m going to die here if I don’t get out! Not physically die, but spiritually. She had felt the feeling gnaw at her for years. Now she had to make a decision. Soon, the few clothes and possessions that she owned were packed in a duffel bag, and she was climbing out through the window.

She had only made it a few blocks when she had to stop for a rest. She had always been frail in health, tiring easily and prone to sickness. She had always hated going outside and playing with the other children, preferring to stay in and pursue her own activities, like studying or reading.

When she had rested, she looked around. She spotted a forest close by and ran toward it, leaving the lights of the city behind. She never looked back. Never wanted to return.
