Summary: He was a genius no one had heard of; he was a prodigy no one could win against, yet he didn’t seem to enjoy playing at all. Who is he? Hikaru Shindo. What is he? No one really knows, but Akira Toya is determined to find out.
PLEASE READ: A/N: I changed a few things, notably Hikaru’s age and I added a detail. The next chapter will be up really soon!!
Chapter 1 First meeting Sai
“What do you think Hikaru?” Heihachi Shindo asked his grandson as he gestured towards the goban, where a match between 2 pros has been recreated. “What should White have done in order to reduce the final gap from 4 moku to 1?”
7 years old Hikaru Shindo looked up calmly from the Go magazine he had been going through and gave the board a cursory once-over; automatically analyzing and taking in the weaknesses and strengths of each player’s game. Although the general layout of the game looked unfamiliar, Hikaru had played enough to see the answer as easily as breathing.
“1,4” he answered confidently after merely 10 seconds of thought, “then cut black off at 3,4.”
Nodding in agreement, Heihachi couldn’t help but look proudly at Hikaru and think about just how totally unbelievable his change over the years was. When Heihachi had started to teach Hikaru the basics 4 years ago, he had never even dreamed that his energetic grandson would turn out to be such a prodigy. 4 years of training later and the young boy was already capable of beating him; Heihachi Shindo, a player that even the great Koyo Toya sometimes loses against. The amount of raw talent Hikaru had was unconceivable and what’s more mind-blowing was that he wasn’t even finished progressing; he was only 7 for god’s sake. Heihachi shivered at what the boy would be like in 4 years. He knew that if Akira Toya was considered a prodigy then Hikaru would be the reincarnation of the God of Go, descended among mere mortals, to teach them a lesson…that is if there was such a thing as a Go God.
However, like many things in life, there were always a bad and a good side. A good side to this genius was that Hikaru was undefeated; and the bad side was that Hikaru was…undefeated. Despite all protest of the contrary, Heihachi could see that because of the lack of a good rival, Hikaru was beginning to get bored of this game. He also knew that he needed to find someone who could beat his grandson soon, or else Hikaru may just decide to quit for good. Of course, there was another bad side to being a genius at his age; he couldn’t go to any salons to play because he was too young. He, Heihachi, would have liked to bring the boy to play against other people but unfortunately his bad legs prevented him from moving too much. Thus, the boy ended up only playing against him and sometimes against players on the internet.
“I think that’s it for today,” he said, smiling at the preteen, “You did good Hikaru and as a gift, I’m allowing you to go choose something you want from the Shed.”
Hikaru’s eyes widened as they brightened in excitement…only if he could be so enthusiast about Go.
“REALLY!” he exclaimed happily, “I can?”
“Yes, go ahead.”
After hugging his grandfather in thanks, Hikaru rushed out of the door, not knowing that what he would find in that shed would change his life forever.
