AN: This is dedicated to the wonderful Kristin, who purchased my time and challenged me to step outside my comfort zone to write this story.
And, for the purposes of this story, Halloween falls on a Friday.
Let me know what you all think!
"And so it begins," muttered Emmett evilly, throwing back his head and letting out an exaggerated "Muah-ha-ha!"
Jasper and I simply rolled our eyes. Emmett was certainly the most devoted to the night out of the three of us, but he had a tendency toward the melodramatic. He was, to put it mildly, a little over the top.
I leaned back, my head held up awkwardly as the rest of my body relaxed against the picnic table, enjoying the unusual presence of the sun in the rainy town of Forks, Washington. It was October 30, mischief night, and it was a tradition amongst us three to be the bane of the Forks population for the past six or so years, ever since we had entered middle school. It had earned us the personal interest of the local chief of police, Chief Swan. His wrath the morning after was nearly as much fun as the mischief itself.
"So," I inquired causally of the people sitting at the table with me, Jasper Hale and Emmett, my older brother, "what are we doing and who are we hitting this year?"
"I vote classics. Eggs, Vaseline, ceran wrap, TP, the works," Jasper drawled from beside me.
Jasper's accent had come from years of living in the south with his father. When he was about 11, his father passed away. He had then moved to live with his mother and his twin sister. This had happened in the beginning of middle school, and we had taken him under our wing until he was like a brother to us as well. His sister and Emmett had eventually, after years of tormenting one another, they were the high school equivalent of married, despite being busy as the quarterback and swimming team captain. They were also this year's homecoming king and queen, to no one's surprise except their own.
Jasper and our sister Alice, had finally fessed up to each other at the beginning of this school year, just in time for the "Welcome Back" dance and were now going steady. It looked like it was going to last until he graduated, and then only they knew where things would go.
As for me? Single. And hating every minute of it. I was in love with my sister's best friend. And she wouldn't even look at me as anything other than her best friends brother. I'd heard her tell my sister as much one night during a sleepover. Isabella Swan never had and never would like me. And I would learn to accept that.
Or at least, that's what I was telling myself as she walked out of the building, hand in hand with class douche Mike Newton.
I let out a low growl that made Jasper roll his eyes. Emmett just looked confused. He didn't know about my feelings for Bella. Telling people would only complicate things. Jasper though, he was a different. It was almost as if he could sense the way my emotions changed whenever she entered the room. Thankfully, he was the only one who had it figured out.
Bella gently pulled her hand out of Mike's and gave him a quick peck on the cheek before walking off in the direction of her car. Mike slapped her on the ass as she walked away, and i found myself perched on the edge of my seat on the bench, fists clenched and teeth gnashing. How he could treat someone as beautiful, intelligent, witty, and all out amazing as Bella with anything but reverent respect was beyond me. As was why she put up with his shit. There were people out there who would treat her much better, and happily too.
"Swan!" I called out involuntarily, my mouth operating of its own accord, trying to get her closer.
She turned around and a smile lit up her face before she came running over. "You rang?" she inquired cheekily, and I felt a smile spreading over my own lips.
"Anyone on your shitlist you'd like to add to ours?" I asked her. "One time special offer."
Emmett looked eager at the mention of new victims, and Jasper simply stared at me incredulously. I just shrugged my shoulders at him, not turning away from the deep chocolate eyes that currently captured my gaze.
"I'm going to break up with Mike," she said suddenly, glancing over her shoulder to see if he had overheard her. "Tomorrow."
"Good," Emmett said, "He's a jackass." Over the years he had sort of adopted Bella as a younger sister and didn't approve of her choice in men any more than I did, although at least his motivations were a little more pure and a little less selfish.
We all nodded in agreement. Mike Newton was on all of our shitlists, not just mine. He had been in a fixed position there since the beginning of high school when he had first called Alice a lesbian because of her pixie cut. It had all been downhill since then. And tonight was the night we got to get revenge. Although I had my own plans for the boy, of a far more personal nature, that didn't mean we should give his place a miss.
"I'm not telling you so you can abuse the guy," she said sternly, looking at each of us in turn in a style that was scarily reminiscent of her father. The resemblance was uncanny. "I'm asking you to give him a break just this one mischief night. He's going to have a rough enough time tomorrow as it is. Don't add to the poor boy's troubles."
We all stared at each other incredulously. Could we really do this? I looked back at Bella, saw her biting her lip, the small worry line back between her brows. For Bella, I told myself sternly. Besides, she hadn't said anything about not fucking with the guy tomorrow, which is when I had planned on exacting revenge anyway.
"If we do what you ask," Emmett said, "you have to come trick-or-treating with us. No ifs ands or buts."
"And you have to kiss Edward," Jasper added, his eyes dancing wickedly.
"Why?" we both asked at once, her face and the tips of my ears turning red.
"To humiliate both of you. And we have to piss Newton off somehow, don't we?" he said, an evil smirk in place on his face.
Bella looked back at Mike, then sighed. She squared her shoulders and then walked a few steps closer. "I'm sorry Edward," she whispered, her brown eyes catching my green before she gently pressed her lips to mine.
My world was on fire. Her lips were so soft, so warm, so right against my own. I had to struggle to keep my hands at my side. To Bella, this was nothing more than a dare. But to me, it was so much more. It was my entire world. She was my entire world.
Far, far too soon, Bella pulled away, face bright pink. "There," she whispered before dashing away to her car, not looking back once.
Emmett and Jasper burst into laughter, Emmett pounding me on the back as he shook with laughter. "Your faces!" he managed to gasp out.
And that was all my brother and best friend had to say about the best moment of my life so far. They were too busy laughing to add much more.
"What do you mean you won't sell it to us?" Emmett exclaimed at Jessica, the girl working the cash register at the grocery store, gesturing vehamently at the eggs on the conveyor belt.
"The owner told us all not to sell to you tonight by orders of the chief of police, and especially not anything that could be used for mischief, as these clearly are intended for. Come back and buy them tomorrow if you actually need eggs for non-mischief night purposes."
The three of us walked out of the store, somewhat defeated. We had everything else, and we didn't really need them, but egging the chief's car had become a sort of tradition amongst us.
"What do we do now?" Emmett asked, his voice that of an upset child. He really was just a gigantic kid at heart.
"That's simple," I told him, a plan forming in my mind. "We get someone else to buy them for us."
"But they probably won't sell to Alice or Rose either, knowing that anything they buy is probably for us," Jasper said, pointing out what he thought to be a flaw in my plan.
"That's why we don't recruit them. We get the daughter of the police chief to do it for us. If she's willing, which would surprise me after the stunt you pulled this afternoon," I said, shoving Jasper a little harder than was necessary just to be playful.
"It can't hurt to ask," Emmett said, sounding thoughtful for once. The rest of us agreed and climbed into the Monster, our nickname for the giant jeep Emmett drove. Soon we had pulled up in our driveway, next door to the Swan's house. Parking in the chief's driveway would have been too suspicious, we decided. So we, the three of us, ran over and knocked on the door.
"What if the chief answers the door?" asked Jasper as Emmett rang the doorbell.
Crap. I hadn't thought of that. "Bushes!" I called, jumping sideways into the nearest shrubbery, forgetting that to the right of the door was the rosebush. "Fuck!" I shouted, essentially blowing any cover we had had.
"Edward?" called a voice, which I was relieved to hear belonged to Bella and not her father. "Is that you cursing in the bushes?"
"Maybe," I said, sticking my head up and attempting to disentangle myself from the thorny foliage. Jasper and Emmett, sensing that it was safe to come out, emerged from their own, thorn free bush. They looked at me, at the predicament I was in. And they laughed.
"Just shut it," I muttered angrily, finally disentangling myself from the bush, bearing several scratches from my efforts.
Bella's hands flew to her mouth as she tried to hold back her laughter. She didn't succeed, but her mirth let me feel at least a little better about the whole thing. I had made her laugh. "What are you three doing?" she asked, giggling uncontrollably.
"Hiding in your bushes," Emmett replied matter-of-factly
"I can see that," she said, giggling again. "What I meant to ask was why."
"Well, we needed to talk to you. And then it occured to us that your father might answer the door. And considering what we plan on doing tonight, we're probably number one on his list of people to bring in. Or at least bring home. Anyway, it's too early in the night for him to mess with our plans. So we hid," Emmett explained.
"You needed to see me?" she asked, her brown eyes meeting my own before she glance away quickly, cheeks turning red. I looked down at the ground myself, more than a little embarrassed after this afternoon. What if Bella couldn't stand to be around me anymore?
"We need to ask you a favor," Jasper began, practically oozing charm. Bella smiled at looked up.
"And what on earth," she said, smiling sweetly, "makes you think i would do you a favor after that stunt you pulled this afternoon?"
Jasper and Emmett at least had the decency to pretend to look abashed. I had nothing to apologize for, so I got to stare at them accusingly as well. Then it was my turn to turn on the charm.
"Bella, please, without your help mischief night will be ruined this year, and the entire town of Forks will be disappointed."
"Except my father."
"Can we compromise?" Emmett asked tentatively.
"I won't talk to anyone but Edward," she growled, at the other tow, making them flinch. I tried not to laugh. Bella could be freighting when she wanted to be, but she reminded me more of a kitten that thought it was a tiger. "He and I were the victims this afternoon."
"So, fellow victim," I began, trying to hide my smile. "What would it take for you to procure some eggs for us?"
"Give my house a miss this year," she said immediately.
"One condition," I said. "The cruiser is fair game."
"Done," she said, a smile lighting up her face. I couldn't help but grin in response, and then we both seemed to remember this afternoon, glancing down, faces turning red. "I'll be right back," she murmured before dashing into the house, slamming the door in my face.
"Thank you. Thank you so much Jasper," I said, voice oozing with sarcasm. "Now she can't even look at me." I scuffed my shoe like a petulant child. Which is essentially what I was.
"What's going on?" Emmett asked, looking back and forth between us. Before either of us had a chance to respond, thankfully, the door opened once again, revealing Bella, but for once it was not her I was focused on. It was what was in her arms. A pink carton. Filled with on dozen, beautiful, elliptical, brown eggs. The three of us gazed up at her in awe. She was our savior. Emmett told her as much as he gingerly removed the eggs from her hands, holding them reverently.
"You have just saved the night. Shall we kiss you feet?" I asked jokingly, trying to salvage something of our old relationship. Bella muttered something to herself, something I was unable to catch.
"Now, you boys have a good night, and tell me all about it in the morning," she said, smiling before closing the door on us.
Emmett turned back to us, egg in hand, box open in an offering, evil look returning. "Let's get this party started!"
"What 'this' are you referring to?" I murmured, face down in the pillow.
"Chief Swan's cruiser is outside, on blocks, tires missing, covered in eggs and marker."
"Don't worry about any of that. It's washable," I told her, turning over so I faced the wall, balling up under my covers. Soon the covers were gone, and I was faced head on with an irate adoptive mother.
"You will return those tires to that man by the end of the day or so help me..." she didn't bother finishing her sentence. My imagination could supply a much better ending than anything she could come up with. There was a slammed door, and several angry footsteps, and a few minutes later, I could hear the shouting of "Emmett McCarty Cullen!" from an entire floor away.
I glanced at the clock. 4 am. Chief was getting started early this year. But not me. There were another two and a half hours before this ass had to be out of bed. And I planned on enjoying those two and half hours. But the universe had other plans for me. It was a mere hour later that my sister came bounding into my room, squealing at a pitch that only dogs could fully appreciate.
"You kissed her!" she cried jumping onto the bed, landing on her knees.
"I did what now?" I muttered, lifting my head from my pillow to stare bleary eyed at my sister.
"You kissed Bella! Why didn't you tell me!" she exclaimed, bouncing up and down in her excitement. "Oh, I've been waiting for this to happen for so long. you two are going to make such a cute couple!"
"It was a dare Alice, nothing more," I told her, lying through my teeth.
"She's going to break up with him, you know," she told me, her eyes making it clear that she knew all about my secret feelings for her BFF.
"I know," I muttered staring at the wall. Thoughts of her looser of a boyfriend reminded me of what I had planned for the day. "Hey Alice, I have a favor to ask you."
It was almost the end of English, our last class of the day, and my plan was in place. All I had to do now was wait.
"Newton!" called Mr. Allen as Mike's bag began to vibrate. "No cell phones in class!" he called out, walking over to Newton, holding out his hand expectantly.
"But my phone is in my locker, I swear," he said, looking confused.
The entire class had turned around to see the drama being played out for them in the second to last row. I put my head down and tried to fight off a smirk. Soon. Soon I would have my revenge. Soon Newton would pay, at least in part.
"Well," said the teacher, reaching into Newton's bag, "then what do you call this?" he asked, pulling the offending object out of Newton's bag. But it wasn't a cell-phone.
The entire class burst into laughter as Mike's face turned a tomato soup red.
"Sir," began Jessica Stanly, smirk on her face, "I believe that's what one would call a vibrator."
The bell rang at that moment, saving Mike from further humiliation and saving me from being discovered. I waited at the door for Bella, who was also in the class, only to have her brush past me without a word. Confused, I followed.
"Bella," I called, grabbing her by the shoulder. She turned around, her eyes red. "Are you angry with me? I know we promised not to play any tricks on him last night, but today was fair game..."
"It's not that, I couldn't care less what you did to Mike. I'll see you tonight," she said before pulling away and running towards her truck.
I stood and stared after my love, hand still outstretched towards her.
"Alice, I look totally and completely ridiculous," I said, staring at myself in the mirror. I was wearing a black suit and a white button up shirt, and dress shoes. My hair was slicked back with gel and combed into submission. I was wearing a long black robe, red on the other side, and going out as a vampire. For some reason, Alice hadn't given me plastic fangs. In fact, she had insisted on my not having them.
"It's Halloween Edward. You're supposed to look totally and completely ridiculous. Everyone is," she retorted. Alice certainly didn't look ridiculous. She was dressed as a dark pixie. No surprise there. More sexy than stupid. Emmett was going as a knight, Rosalie as his damsel in distress. Jasper was going as a confederate solider. And Bella...I had no idea what Bella was going as. Everyone except her had come over to prepare, but Bella had said to just come pick her up when we were ready.
As if sensing my thoughts, Alice smiled before shoving me out the door. "Go get'um tiger," she whispered, patting me on the back.
I waled next door to Bella's house, ringing the bell. And my angel opened the door.
She was beautiful, wearing a white dress that clung to all the right places. Her wings glimmered in the light from the door, halo above her hair which was in a neat and tidy bun. Her eyes were wide and they traveled up and down.
"You look..."I trailed off, not knowing how to complete the sentence.
"Yeah," she said, looking a little dazed. "You too."
"Edward! Bella! get your asses over here!" Emmett hollered from our house next door.
We walked in silence a few steps behind the rest of the group. We were planning on doing some trick or treating on our way to Angela's party, but it was a pretty long walk to the first house we knew would give us a reward for our efforts.
"Bella," I began, sensing her awkwardness around me and wanting it to go away, "are you being so weird because of the kiss?" She nodded, while the others ran ahead to the house of our first victim. I held Bella back though. "Because it really isn't a big deal," I told her, trying to sound serious.
She mumbled something under her breath. I made her repeat it, and she did, although her eyes were downcast as she said, "It was to me."
There were no word to describe how i felt at that moment, so I simply pressed my lips to hers.
"Come on," I told her, gently grabbing her hand, "There's candy to be had."
