Hard-drives

Chapter 1

Iden was not looking forward to summer vacation, because he knew that it would be the same as last year, a trip to the Bahamas, every single year! It was the same, the school sent Mr. Del-Rio and his family to the Bahamas, Iden practically knew the Heartson hotel staff by name. Plus, Iden was not the type of guy who liked to overwork holidays. The boy was a workaholic, work was like his drug, his holiday, and his friends were always telling him to tone it down. Initially, he was just like his father.

Speaking of his friends, which he had a lot of, but that’s not the point, his best friends were Yasmin Polk, Aubrey Brooks, Kina Williamson and Dylan Powers. They called themselves 'The Rejects', because a couple of months go, they were. See, Iden, Aubrey, Kina and Dylan used to be 'Rejects' and when Yasmin’s friends stopped trusting her because she had kept a really big secret from them, that secret was that she was rich. Anyway, one day when Yasmin was singing in the theatre Kina got carried away and cheered her on, and from then on they had been friends. A month later Dana invited them all to an all night mall party, the result of that was that they and the Bratzpack had become friends.

But the point was, his friends were all going to new vacation spots. Let’s meet 'The Rejects' right now, they were sitting in the cafeteria only one table away from the Bratzpack, Yasmin waved over at Jade, who waved back and came over to the table.

“Hey guys!” Jade said with a smile on her face. “What’s up, what are you doing for the summer?”

Yasmin, Kina, Aubrey and Dylan smiled in thought while Iden kind of smirked, along with a grimace. “My summer is going to rule!” Kina said pumping a fist in the air, and almost knocking Aubrey over, but Aubrey caught herself and settled down to hear what Kina was doing over the summer, after being swung at like that. “I won a contest yesterday and now I’m spending my entire summer touring with Katy Perry!” The entire table was filled with oohs, ahs and of course Aubrey’s very inquisitive “How come you didn’t tell us earlier than lunch?”

“I wanted to surprise you guys!” Kina shouted, flipping one of her curly pink streaked ponytails behind her back. Today, Kina was wearing a pink, yellow and blue striped top and blue jeans with sparkling rhinestones all over them, as always, Aubrey blamed the outfit for her retinal damage and Dylan had already asked whether or not Kina could go any brighter, to which Kina had responded with a happy ‘YES!’.

“Wow Kina!” Jade seemed very envious so Kina decided to offer her the extra ticket. “You could come with me Jade, they said I could bring one person with me so...” Iden gasped quietly. How could Kina offer Jade the trip and not him!? That was proposterous! I mean she knew that Iden hated his vacation situation and that would have been an awesome opportunity for a holiday. But anyway, Kina had offered it to Jade and there was no point in arguing. Even if Iden did feel like it.

It was Yasmin’s turn to explain her summer situation. “Well, I’m skiing in the Alps, and since my parents said I could bring one friend, I’m going to take...” Iden crossed his fingers, hoping and praying she would pick him “Aubrey with me!” Aubrey let out a squeal of delight and Iden almost dropped his head onto the table. Was there something wrong here? Of course there was! Everyone was getting offered trips left and right and he was being left out! Who wanted to go to the Bahamas this year anyway? He hoped some type of tsunami happened and he didn’t have to go.

Well, there was more to the reason Iden didn’t want to go to the Bahamas this year, but that comes later, and I mean way later. The point is, Iden was seriously going to kill someone if he didn’t get offered something apart from the Bahamas this summer. Eitan came over to the table, and already Iden was seeing this as either his or Dylan’s chance out of Stilesville.

“Hey Eitan.” Kina greeted, “Hi.” Jade followed suit, everybody around the table greeted him until it came to Yasmin, who said “Um... nice to.... Eitan. Hey.” It was a well known fact that Eitan had a huge crush on Yasmin and wasn’t above crazy stunts to get to her heart. An example was the time he’d once used the Stiles Mall to broadcast a heartfelt poem to her, so while everybody watched Yasmin blush continuously they also tried to find wherever Eitan was singing from. But that isn’t the point of this...

“Well, I’m going to Hawaii for the summer so I was wondering, Yasmin, are you...” Eitan didn't even get a chance to ask the girl before she came out with her response. “Skiing, alps, with Audrey.” Yasmin said, trying to avoid embarrassment at all costs. Eitan, apart from being known for his ‘Embarrassing Yazzie’ attitude was also known for his childish tantrums at times. So for major damage control, Yasmin always tried to answer before he was done, as that stopped him in his tracks most of the time.

“Aw! Okay, then. Who wants to go with me?” Iden may have been desperate, but no way. I mean, to spend the entire summer with Eitan the baby, make that, Eitan the straight baby. It would just be leading to the inevitable way of kind of in a way falling in love with Eitan and ultimate rejection. Iden was not going to get involved in this love triangle. But maybe Dylan would take the trip?

“No way.” Dylan sad before Iden could even form a sentence in his head “I think I’m content with staying in Stiles this summer.” Everybody turned to Iden “Um... I . . .” Iden had nothing to say, so he had to think of something, and fast. “Well, I can’t, I sunburn easily.” He finished that statement with more of a questioning voice but Eitan got the hint.

“Okay.” Eitan looked disappointed, but still moved on to the next table, hoping to bring along at least one friend on this trip. Iden thought about it, why not let Cade take his parents on by himself? Why not stay in Stiles and look after the house? He could make up a good excuse. Was Byron still doing the entire pretending to be a bandit thing he had done on the girls reality show? Well, this was total evidence he was desperate, 100% bone-fied desperate. Ugh.

“Um, so Yasmin, room for one more?” Iden said to his latina friend hoping for something, as in, an invite too. “Sorry, girls only this summer.” Yasmin said, a bit on the sad side. It seemed as if Iden really wanted to get out of Stilesville this summer. “Not even my dad is coming, anyway, Kina? Jade? Would you want to?” Both jet black haired girls shook their heads, there was no way now, especially with those Katy Perry tickets in their hands. “Sorry Yas, not missing Katy Perry.” Kina said happily. Iden wanted to kill himself right now, but he couldn’t, the lunch break ended and everybody headed toward their classes.

-(I)-

Iden headed toward his fathers homeroom class, practising what he was going to say. Practicing his convincing speech for when his father gave his the ‘Oh no, an Iden idea...’ look and being as co-ordinated as ever. Okay, I lied about the last part since he crashed right into the librarian, Felicia Powers, who was, as you may have figured out, was the older sister of one of his very best friends, Dylan Powers.

Felicia, where do we start? She was thirty five, but still pretty in a teenager way. Her skin tone was much darker than Dylan’s and her eyes were a lighter shade of green than his were, so they were half and half, even though humans have way more skin than eyes, or in this case, irises, but let’s not go into the genes and looks too much. Her hair was also a kind of light brown, similar to Yasmin’s sister Beth’s. And the girl had the entire library memorized by heart. She had only been working in the library for three years but she knew the library like it was the back of her hand... maybe even better. If that was at all possible.

“I’m sorry Fel...” Iden said, then realised how informal he was being pulled that back and said “Uh, I’m sorry Ms. Powers.”

“Oh no problem Id-” She said in her almost hoarse voice, she cleared her throat a bit. It wasn't that she was sick or anything, it was just her natural voice, Kina thought it was because she never spoke and was always reading, and she would always tell Yasmin and Aubrey they would suffer the same fate if they kept ‘over reading’ “And call me Fel.”

“Okay, what’s up?” Iden inquired, wondering where she seemed to be going in a bit of a hurry. He was just a bit curious.

“I’m going digital with the library’s Stiles archive this summer and I just can’t find anyone to create a database because I also am really busy this summer with the entire gaming and magazine sections coming in soon and...” Iden smiled, a database? That was cake! And to spend all summer working, which was his favourite thing to do and to spend it in the not Bahamas which was, well, Stilesville? It was way better than summer, in... summer...

Oh yeah, one more thing, there never is summer in Stilesville. It seems the temperatures hate anything above fall heat, and that’s what they have n the summer, so usually, if you’re staying home in the summer, you can work, even though most people still liked to take their long vacations and... I’m off track aren’t I? So the point was, Iden was saved this summer. Yay for him!

“I’ll do it!” Iden said, not giving Felicia a chance to elaborate “I’m just gonna tell my dad, okay?”

And this is where Iden, and to a certain extent Dylan’s summer began. With Iden walking toward his father's homeroom class to tell him the good (or disappointing, if you were in Mr. Del Rio’s place) news.
