Jacob’s POV
I never was really into Valentine’s Day. I realized that now that I was with Edward that would quickly change. I awoke up to the smell of chocolate and an empty bed. I sat up groggily and wondered where on earth Edward could possibly be. That thought was quickly dismissed when I noticed the bed was littered with rose petals and oddly enough, differently shaped boxes of chocolate. There was a small note on one of them.
Jacob,
I wasn’t sure which one to get so I got them all.
Edward
I was beyond impressed. I knew I should get up and go look for Edward so I could show my appreciation but all that chocolate was calling my name I just couldn’t resist. I was even more pleasantly surprised to discover each box was a different flavor. Out of all of them I liked the one filled with mint chocolate the most. Aidan most certainly agreed.
Okay, seriously now, I need to go and look for Edward. I climbed out of bed and threw on some sweatpants, making my way to the kitchen first to see if he would be there. I was not disappointed. Edward was standing there waiting for me. The whole kitchen was filled with flowers. At least at first I thought they were flowers. When I looked closely enough I saw they were edible bouquets.
Not flowers, fruit. Is there nothing he doesn’t know about me?
“My God Edward. You really go all out don’t you.” I pointed out as he chuckled and walked over to me, kissing me on the lips as I melted against him.
“When it comes to you there are no exceptions.” Edward pecked me on the lips one last time before pulling back. “I thought you might like this instead of real flowers.”
“Like it? I’m seriously considering having more of your children right now.” I answer truthfully as he laughs. I walk over to one bouquet and pluck of a piece of melon, stuffing it in my mouth and sighing in content. “I should have gotten you something. Now I feel bad.”
“You’re giving me more than enough.” He pats my stomach fondly before grabbing a piece of watermelon and feeding it to me.
“More than enough does not even come close to describing your son Aidan.” I felt him shift, as he always did when he heard his name. It always amazed me how intelligent the kid was. He’d figured out his own name right away.
“I’m hoping you’ll be up to doing a lot more later on. There was something important I wanted to ask you.” Edward pauses thoughtfully as I eat a grape. “I was hoping to get in your good graces by then so that you would be able to forgive me.”
“Forgive you?” I repeat back in confusion. “What do I need to forgive you fo-”
“Edward hurry it up! We’re not going to wait forever!” Alice’s voice yelled up the stairs and my sensitive ears picked up even more chatter. Chatter that all came from excited female throats. Every one else’s voice was easily distinguishable. I shot Edward a dirty look.
“You didn’t…” I whined and he smiled apologetically.
“Alice could not be deterred. We shouldn’t keep them all waiting.” Edward pushed me towards the stairs and then down as I came face to face with blue streamers, baby banners and other baby-shower induced themes. My grandmother, Carlisle, Rosalie, Jasper and Seth were there. As was Sam, Emily and Emmett. Then there was Victory and Laurent. Near the middle of it all was Rachel, Rebecca and Alice.
“I want a divorce.” I hissed at Edward who chuckled.
“We have to be married.” He points out as I scowl.
“Then marry me so that I can divorce you.” Alice and Rachel took me from Edward’s grasp and sat me on the couch, putting some weird baby hat on my head. I snatched it back off and crushed it in my hands. Rebecca, who had the camera, went to work on snapping pictures.
“Awe, smile Jake, this is a special day.” Rebecca urged but I gave her the middle finger. She snapped another photo. “You can put that in your private stash. You’re so cute when you’re angry.”
“Well then I’m about to be adorable in a minute.” I threatened and everyone in the room laughed. I was not having fun.
“Happy Baby Shower Uncle Jake!” Natalie throws some confetti over my head, as Renesmee throws some on my stomach. Aidan started to grow really restless and gave me a couple of sharp kicks. He almost seemed panicked. “Oh, stop Nessie. Aidan doesn’t like it, he’s scared.” Natalie dropped the bag of confetti and hugged my bare stomach. “Sorry Aidan, we didn’t mean to scare you.”
“Sorry.” Renesmee whispered and I felt Aidan settle down a little bit. Natalie pulled back and I ran a hand over my stomach feeling a little concerned. I didn’t want Aidan to have some weird confetti phobia.
“He should be fine now.” I murmured and both girls nodded. I glanced around and noticed everyone watching me. “So was that it? Please tell me that was it.”
“Be nice. Your sisters and I put a lot of thought into this whole shindig.” Alice drops a gift bag in front of me. “So smile and act like this is the best day of your life.”
“Yeah because that will be easy.” I muttered sarcastically and ruffled through the gift bag marked from Rachel. I pulled out a set of bibs. Rebecca snapped a picture. “What is this? Baby napkins?” Rachel stared at me mortified and I laughed. “I’m kidding. How ignorant do you think I am?”
“I’m hoping not at all, other wise I would have to take away Aidan and raise him myself.” Rachel crosses her arms as I roll my eyes and dropped the bibs back into the baby bag.
“Thank you.” I say and she nods. Alice places the next one in front of me. It was marked from Rebecca. I pulled out a pack of bottles, bottle cleaners, rubber pacifiers and receiver blankets. “Thanks.”
“They are essential.” Rebecca winked and she was a nurse so of course she would know. She snapped another picture.
“Okay, now you get to open one of mine.” Alice placed a large package in front of me and I eyed it up wondering what it could possibly be. I started tearing the paper off and saw it was a battery-powered swing.
“Okay, why does he need this?” I look at the picture of a smiling sitting peacefully in the swing. “I could take him to the park for half the trouble.” I pointed out and Alice rolled her eyes.
“You’ll thank me, trust me.” She moved the box off to the side and put another, smaller box in front of me. It was marked from Rosalie.
This should be good. I tear off the wrapping, face going red when I saw it was a breast pump.
“I figured you might need it mutt.” She cackled from the other side of the room.
“You’re a real riot Blondie. I’ll try to return the favor when you give me grandkids.” I shot back and she glared at me. Again, Alice whisked the gift away and replaced it with another. She set another small box in front of me, this time it was marked from Natalie and Renesmee.
“Thanks.” I say, looking down at the box-full of newborn diapers and wipes. I knew that would be handy.
“My mom said that it’s one of the things baby needs the most so me and Nessie knew it was perfect and her daddy, Uncle Emmett helped us buy it.” Natalie beamed, wrapping an arm around Renesmee’s shoulder.
“Open the other one.” Renesmee says quietly as Alice put a gift bag in front of me. “The one time when I was wearing my duck shirt, Nat said that Aidan really liked it so we bought him a duck.” I pulled out the plush toy and it came with a matching outfit, hat and a blanket. “He can take it anywhere. In his bed or when you give him a bath…”
“This is really neat.” I say honestly. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” They say simultaneously and then giggled when they realized they did.
“Speaking of baths…this one is from Carlisle.” Alice set a medium-sized box in front of me. I tore off the wrapping and saw a real expensive looking baby bath. I told him thanks and he said no problem. “Next one is…” Alice looked for the label on a small box. “From Emily and Sam.” She handed it to me and I opened it to see a baby monitor.
“We figured you might need it.” Emily shrugged shyly and laced her fingers with Sam. I gave them both a thanks.
“This is from Jasper and I.” She set the gift in front of me. “We had to get it specially made.” I removed the wrapping to reveal night-lamp/music box. There were shapes of wolves in the carving. It looked pretty cool.
“Thanks, this is nice.” I put it back in the box. Alice handed me a box marked Rosalie and I wasn’t so sure I wanted to open it. I ripped the wrapper off. I was right.
“You’re so funny. Really.” I shove the box of condoms away as Rosalie smirked.
“Never can be too safe.” She throws Edward a wink.
“Keep it up Godilicks, I can’t wait to return the favor some day.” I cracked my knuckles and Rosalie just rolled her eyes. Alice handed me the next gift marked Edward. I opened it and saw it was a spooning-pillow for expecting mothers. It said it fit to the shape of your body for a more relaxing night of rest.
“Thanks.” I smile at him as he nods, walking over and giving me a kiss and a flash goes off. I growled and give my sister an annoyed look.
“What? It was hot.” Rebecca laughed and high-fived Rachel as I blushed. I tugged on Edward’s sleeve so that he would sit by my side.
“From Seth.” Alice handed me another gift and I tore off the wrapping to see a bear.
“It’s called a Womb Bear or something. It plays like the sounds of the inside of your stomach because the baby gets used to it I guess. Anyway, it supposed to help them get to sleep faster.” Seth explains and I nod.
“Thanks.” Alice hands me another gift bag, marked from Rosalie and Emmett. I really didn’t know if I wanted to see what was inside. I reached in and pulled out a set of baby caps, each one had a smartass saying on it. I knew that had to be from Emmett because he had a thing about hats and smartass sayings. I reached in again and pulled out a set of shoes. That was Rosalie’s, I knew right away.
“I didn’t want him to have your poor taste in shoes.” Rosalie sniffs as I scoff.
“Yeah, sure. Thanks.” I say to both of them and they nod. My grandmother bought Aidan a bassinet and told me that Edward had already taken it up to our room. Alice also handed be a basket full of baby cleaning items that was from my grandmother, along with a large bag of clothes. Even before the baby shower, Aidan had already had a lot of clothes. That number just intensified.
“He’ll never have to worry about going…” I trailed off as I stared out the window. Bella stood right there, leaning against the tree. Everyone noticed my strange pause and looked in the direction of my line of sight. It was almost amusing, the instantaneous tension that thickened in the room.
“What’s she doing?” Rosalie growled, flexing her finger as Bella smirked at all of us.
“Mommy…” Renesmee walked forward but Emmett snatched her up quickly and Renesmee whimpered in confusion. Bella looked at Renesmee with a little longing but then cleared her face. She walked forward and entered the house nonchalantly.
“Happy Valentines everyone.” She smirked and held up her palms when she noticed some of the men getting ready to pounce. “Ah, ah. I wouldn’t if I were you. You won’t get through.” Bella encased herself in some kind of shield. Seth and Sam had long since phased and when they tried to tackle her, they smacked into the shield with a sickening slap. They limped backwards but kept their threatening crouches. “Thanks for the demonstration.” Bella smirked their way as they snarled. “Anyone else want to make an ass of themselves?” She looked around at the crowd of glares. “Good. I really don’t have a lot of time to waste. And if you keep it up, you won’t learn why I’ve willingly exposed myself.”
“What is the meaning of this?” Carlisle was the first to speak and Bella gave him a wink. Carlisle barely contained an enraged growl. My grandmother came to his side and placed a comforting hand on his shoulder, getting him to calm down. It seemed to have worked because he relaxed and placed his hand over hers.
“Edna Black, it’s been a while since I last saw you. You know, I can see you’re helping Carlisle with his grieving. It’s touching really.” Bella laughed and Rosalie charged at her. “Don’t be rude Rosalie.” She held up her palm, sending Rosalie flying back and pinned her to the wall with her invisible bindings. “I’m sorry, you know I forget sometimes that I stole your husband so of course you’re mad.” Bella shook her head, feigning a look of modesty.
“Isabella, you will explain yourself.” Carlisle demanded and she turned to him with a bored expression.
“If people would stop trying to attack me I will.” Bella dropped her hands and Rosalie was loosened. The blond had fire in her eyes, even I had never seen her so pissed off. Bella turned her gaze to me. “My, my Jake. This is unexpected.”
“Yeah, no shit.” I grumble back and she laughs. Edward was standing over me protectively and his body was wracked with tension. It was obvious that, like everyone else, he was trying to contain himself.
“How many months are you now?” Bella cocked her head, staring down out my stomach with a twisted expression of fascination. “I really just want to touch your stomach. Then again if I do that I might just get the urge to rip what ever mutant child you have inside out of you.” Bella laughed as everyone started standing in front of me protectively with a growl. “Oh give me a fucking break! You don’t have to get all uptight. I’m not going to touch your precious Jacob.” She sneered.
“Then why are you here?” Alice asks and Bella gives a pause.
“Don’t you know Alice?” Bella says in a sarcastic, surprised tone. “My, this is interesting.” Bella sighed. “Now…what was it that I came to tell you all?” She tapped her chin thoughtfully. “Right, I remember now.” She fakes a sheepish look. “See, I was having a conversation with some good friends of mine, some people who offered me and a little minion of mine a position in their coven, seeing as how we have unique gifts they find useful. The Volturi sound familiar? You might know them. Anyway, I might have possibly let it slip that a fellow member of our kind was in a relationship with a certain shifter. Of course Aro found that to be incredibly interesting. I told him it was nothing special but he was insistent so I told him everything. Long story short, I was sent to relay a message…what was it…what was it?” Bella looks around contemplatively.
“Enough with the fucking games you psychotic whore.” Rosalie hissed but Bella ignored her.
“Oh yeah, he says, and I quote, ‘You can either come to them or they will come to you.’ So, I don’t know, it took me a while to get that message here, I was too busy sight seeing and what not. Anyway, that was a month ago so I don’t know when the expiration date on that warning was. I’d love to stay and watch you all get killed, well who am I kidding, I’d love nothing more. But I usually like to stay out of the line of fire. Have fun, I hear they’re great, like the best house guests.” Bella turned to Emmett and Renesmee. “Give me my daughter Emmett, I’d really like to get going.”
“No.” Emmett growled, clutching her and Bella’s eyes flashed dangerously.
“I wasn’t asking you.” Bella stepped back as another person entered the room. I know I wasn’t the only person who was surprised to see it was Jessica. She stood beside Bella with a zombie-like expression. “He’s being difficult, see if you can’t do something about will you Jess? Show them all why I call you the puppet master.”
“With pleasure.” She responds obediently and pins her red eyes on Emmett. Emmett struggles, body tensing and locking up and it looked like he was fighting with himself. “This one’s stubborn.” A chilling smirk crosses Jessica’s pale face and she never takes her eyes off of Emmett.
“Don’t play around, we have to get going. A fucking massacre is about to go down.” Bella hissed impatiently and my chest tightened with anxiety. Jessica nodded and kept her eyes trained. She moved her arms and Emmett imitated the motion and we were all horrified to see that Jessica had complete control over his body.
“Nat…” Renesmee reached for Natalie in panic and Natalie cried out, but was held back by Rachel. Victory and Laurent try to charge on them but again Bella had them encased in an unwavering shield. Rosalie, Jasper and Alice tried as well, but no luck. Bella didn’t even give them a glance. Emmett started walking closer and closer to Jessica, holding Renesmee out with outstretched arms.
“Hold him for fuck’s sake!” Rosalie snapped, jarring Edward and Carlisle into action as they tried to pull him back. I could see they were having some trouble since Emmett was such a big guy.
“Nat!” Renesmee yelled out again. It was a change from her usual soft spoken demeanor and it sent chills of sadness through me. I felt utterly helpless. There wasn’t much I could do and everyone was preoccupied with trying to disarm Bella and Jessica or Emmett. I had forgotten that my grandmother, Rebecca and Emily were the only other humans. All three women sat beside me on the couch, holding each other’s hands as we watched this tragic sight unfold helplessly.
“Nessie…” Natalie whimpered, her small frame shuddered with restrained emotion but the house started to shake. “Nessie…Nessie…” Natalie chanted and her green eyes started to glow and she turned them on Bella and Jessica.
“What…the fuck…” Bella started, taking a step back in concern.
“I won’t let you hurt anyone, any more Izzy…” Natalie lifted her hands and concentrated. Rachel looked panicked for a moment.
“Get back. Get back!” She warned to Victory, Laurent, Rosalie, Jasper and Alice. They moved out the way and the house continued to quack and shudder. It almost felt like an earthquake. The lights flickered on and off repeatedly and as Natalie kept her glowing eyes on Jessica and Bella.
“Do something, what the fuck, why are you just standing there?” Bella hissed at Jessica and she stopped her control over Emmett and turned her attention on Natalie.
“I…I can’t get through she’s so…so…” Jessica gurgled and Bella choked, her shield wavering on and off. We all watched in awe as their skin started to literally disintegrate into mere, dust-like molecules before ripping apart completely in a fleshly tear. There was not one piece of evidence of their existence when it was all over. Natalie collapsed on her knees, breathing heavily as the house stood still. She started to sob once she realized just what she did.
“It’s okay…oh baby…it’s okay…” Rachel instantly wrapped her arms around Natalie’s weeping form. “You were just trying to protect us all…” Renesmee wiggled out of Emmett’s arm and went to comfort her best friend. She started crying herself when she saw that her mother was gone for good. She didn’t seem to blame Natalie at all, she just seemed really sad, like she understood why it had to be done.
“One hell of a baby shower huh?” Emily broke the silence and I couldn’t help it, I laughed as tears fell down my eyes. Bella may have been a monster, but at one point she had been my best friend. She wasn’t always evil.
“It’s alright Jake…let it out…” My grandmother rubbed soothing circles into my back and as I sobbed and Aidan grew restless. I know that he could feel my distress.
“We need to prepare ourselves.” Alice speaks up, looking around the room. “The Volturi are on their way here. I can see clearly now that Bella is no longer a factor. They should be here by sunset tomorrow.” Edward pulls me up into a hug and clings to me almost desperately.
“I’ll never forgive myself if I something should happen to you.” He whispered in my hair and my arms tightened around him.
“Who are these…vultures or what ever their name is?” I pulled back as he stared at me with distraught golden orbs.
“The Volturi. They are the ones who keep order in the world of our kind.” Edward pauses, and he has that expression again, the one where he’s not sure if he should share something.
“Just tell him.” Rosalie says as she helps my sisters clean up the mess. Edward glances at her with a frown before turning back to me.
“They are the ones who started the war between your kind and my kind long ago. They have utter disregard for shifters.” Edward explains and I think back to the story that my grandmother had told me a long time ago. “She was correct.”
“So, what, they’ve come to do what with me? Kill me for existing?” I ask and Edward’s jaw hardened.
“No, not for existing.” He merely says and I’m confused. Alice glances at Edward before turning to me.
“Interaction between your kind and ours is frowned upon by them but they don’t think much of it. Becoming romantically involved on the other hand…” Alice trails of but I get the gist of what she’s trying to say.
“They still consider shifters to be inferior. It is one of the unspoken rules. They say a master can not lay with his slave.” Edward clarifies and I feel a little offended.
“They sound like jackasses.” Seth says exactly what I’m thinking.
“They have a very old-world view and mindset. They’ve existed since the dawn of mankind.” Carlisle offers and takes a moment to look around. “I can not see why the situation can not be explained to them.”
“You’re suggesting we ask them to change a law they’ve upheld for centuries.” Edward hisses impatiently but Carlisle looks at him calmly.
“We won’t know unless we try son. We don’t have much of a choice. And if it does come to us having to fight, we’ll just fight to the best of our abilities.” Carlisle says and turns to my sister Rebecca, Emily and my grandmother. “You three should get home and somewhere safe.”
“No, I’m not leaving my brother.” Rebecca says, teary-eyed and pale with fright.
“Becky please, I’ll be okay.” Even though I say this, I don’t completely believe the words myself. Edward gives my hand a comforting squeeze and it puts some of my fears at ease.
“Jake…” She sobbed, walking over to me and wrapping her arms around me before looking at her twin. “If I lost you two…”
“Don’t Becca, you’ll see us again.” Rachel says and motions Rebecca to the door. Emily follows and my grandmother stands to her feet, pausing in front of Carlisle.
“I expect to see you soon.” She says to him quietly. Carlisle brushed his knuckles against the back of her hand subtly. I was the only one who caught the small act affection. They catch each other’s eye and something unspoken passes between them. She looks away and takes a deep breath before she turns to me with worried eyes. “Don’t overdue it Jake. We don’t want Aidan coming into this world before his time.” She gave a wry smile and exited the house with Emily and Rebecca.
“I’ll inform the rest of the pack of the situation. I’m hoping this is the only time we have to fight side by side.” Sam says, glancing around. “You have our support. Through and through. Seth.” Sam turns to Seth who nods and they both phase.
“I want to go lay down.” I say weakly and Edward’s gaze softened and he takes me to our room. I’d be lying if I said I was scared. I lie on our bed, spooning the pillow that Edward bought for me as he holds me from behind.
“I won’t let anything happen. I promise you that. I’d gladly give up my life for you two.” Edward whispers fiercely.
“Don’t say that. No one’s going to die.” I clench my eyes shut and tried not to think about any of it.
“I just wanted you to know.” Edward replies softly. I was distraught with warring emotions that I couldn’t even get the sleep I wanted. It didn’t matter because I wanted to savor the feeling of being in Edward’s arms forever.
“Edward…please…I need to feel you…” I whisper, turning to him. I couldn’t help that I cried the whole time, Edward showering me with kisses and gentle touches. I just knew that I needed him desperately. We made love into the night and even when the dawn broke through. I wasn’t sure what day would bring but I just enjoyed the time of slight peace that came when Edward and I were together. I just focused all of my energy and all on my thoughts on that.
No matter what, I love you.
Okay, so, um…this was hard to spit out so I really need some encouraging words to help me get through the next update. Show me you value my time.
