Thirty-two-year-old Greg Sanders had dragged himself through the door to his house. He was exhausted from the double shift that he had just pulled and he just wanted to sleep for the rest of the week. He rubbed his extended stomach as he eased himself onto the couch. He was five months pregnant with twin boys that he decided to name Andrew Nicholas Sanders and Ryan Michael Sanders. He had gotten pregnant from his previous relationship with Daniel White. Daniel had broken up with him since he was not as attractive as he used to be ever since he was blown up in his lab and then attacked by a group of teenagers that called themselves Fannysmackers. He was still sporting the bruises on his face and had his right ankle in an ace bandage.
He sighed in relief when the pressure on his lower back was alleviated. He knew that he was going to have to take maternity leave in a couple months so he forced himself to work and save up enough money. As he was sitting on the couch, he was thinking about the man that he had fallen in love with, Assistant Supervisor Nick Stokes. He had been in love with the older man for over three years but never told him. Nick had adopted a young woman that had lost her family to a sociopath five years ago.
Cassie Stokes, formerly McBride, was a very inquisitive and mature young woman for the age of sixteen. He used to think that she was older since she could see things that even adults could never notice at first. She was like a daughter to him and he loved spending time with her when she and Nick came to visit him. He wanted to be a part of Nick and Cassie's lives but knew that Nick did not love him. He ended up falling asleep in the same spot four hours later.
The Next Day
Nick Stokes and his daughter, Cassie, were heading over to see if Greg wanted to spend the day with them. He knew that the younger man was like a second father to Cassie. Cassie had told him one night that she wished he would tell Greg that he was in love with him. Nick knew that Cassie wanted him and Greg to get together so they could be a real family. Nick smiled and thought about Greg and he being married and raising children together.
When they pulled into the driveway of Greg's house, Nick handed Cassie the spare key that Greg had given to the both of them. If Nick was working late, Cassie would have Catherine Willows drive her over to Greg's house since she was her carpool ride. She jumped out of the Denali and headed over to the front door. She unlocked the door bolt first and then unlocked the door handle. She quietly opened the door and walked in. "Uncle Greg, are you here? It's Cassie," she called out.
A few minutes later, Greg had walked downstairs after cleaning up and getting dressed for the day. He was wearing an emerald-green buttoned-down shirt with a pair of baggy black jeans and his black All-Stars. The bruises were still on his face but she did not care. "Hey Uncle Greg, Dad and I came to see if you wanted to spend the day with us since he has two weeks off," she replied as she hugged Greg around his shoulders. She avoided his stomach so she would not hurt his children.
"I would love to spend the day with you and your father. I think a little fresh air would help me relax. I have not been getting enough sleep since last week. I still have nightmares recurring every night I close my eyes," Greg replied as he hugged Cassie close to him. He was glad that he had a form of distraction to get his mind off what happened to him two months ago. He was just glad that he did not miscarry. He would have been devastated if he lost his twin sons. Nick smiled at the man that he was in love with and hoped that his feelings would be returned when he told Greg.
"Cassie and I decided to go to the wax museum then go out to eat," Nick replied as he rubbed Greg's lower back to soothe his edginess. He knew that Greg was still a little wary of going out into public after almost dying when he saved an older man that was attacked by the Fannysmackers.
Greg took comfort in the hand that was massaging his lower back. It felt good to have someone take care of him. His own parents had disowned him when they found out that he was pregnant and unmarried. His own mother had slapped him across the face and told him that he was a mistake and he should have never been born. He had cried for days after his parents left and wondered if they would let him back into the family if he was married. He probably would tell them that they broke his heart and he never wanted to see them again.
Greg nodded and smiled at the two Stokes. "Well, come on then. We can get a good parking space if we leave now. Uncle Greg, you should probably be in a wheelchair when we are walking around the museum. You look too tired and exhausted to be on your feet that long," Cassie replied as she pulled Greg out of the house. Greg smiled at his adopted daughter's concern for him. Nick had locked the door before getting into the Denali. Nick made sure that Greg was comfortably seated in the truck before getting in himself. Once Greg was comfortable, Nick closed the passenger door and walked over to the driver's side. He got in and buckled himself in. He turned the engine on and backed out of the driveway. Once he saw that there were no other vehicles approaching, he turned around and drove down the street towards the entrance to Interstate 15.
When Nick turned onto the interstate, he glanced over at Greg. He smiled when he saw the younger man rubbing his stomach softly. He hoped to have more children with Greg one day. As he was driving down the highway, he heard quiet snores being emanated. He looked over and saw that Greg had fallen asleep. He knew that Greg was exhausted from working so many long hours being pregnant and still trying to take care of himself.
Thirty minutes later, Greg felt someone waking him up. He opened his eyes and was met with Nick's sparkling deep brown eyes. "Hey G, we are here at the museum. Cassie went to go rent a wheelchair for you. Let's get you out of the truck," he replied softly. Greg nodded and unbuckled his seatbelt. Nick saw Cassie returning with the wheelchair and helped Greg out of the car. Greg's right ankle was wrapped in an ace bandage because he had fallen at work and sprained it severely. Cassie parked the wheelchair right where Greg was standing and Nick eased the younger pregnant man into the chair.
Once Greg was comfortably seated in the wheelchair, Nick started pushing him towards the entrance to the museum. Cassie opened the door for her father to push Greg through. Once Nick cleared the threshold, Cassie walked through and caught up with her father. Together they walked through the museum. Cassie was intrigued by two men that looked like her father and Greg. "Dad and Uncle Greg, you got to see this. These two men look almost like you," she replied happily. Nick wheeled Greg over to where Cassie was standing and was amazed by the resemblance that the wax images had to him and Greg.
Greg was laughing as Nick and Cassie teased each other when all of a sudden, he saw his parents walking through the museum looking at each of the exhibits. He felt the tears gathering up in the back of his eyes. He felt the slap that his mother gave him across his face. He whimpered loudly and raised his arm to cover his face from letting Nick see the tears that were starting to fall. Nick and Cassie heard Greg's whimper and wondered what was wrong with him. "Greg, what's wrong?" Nick asked as he kneeled down in front of Greg and rested his hands on the young man's knees.
Greg let out a choked sob and replied, "M-My parents are h-here. They disowned me f-for not b-being married and pregnant. M-My mom s-s-said that s-she wished I was never born." He broke down sobbing and Nick's heart broke at the devastation on Greg's face. He gathered the smaller man into his arms and held him as he sobbed brokenly. Nick looked over at Greg's parents and saw the heartache and remorse in their eyes. He knew that Greg would not want anything to do with his parents after they almost destroyed him. "Nicky, can we leave please? I cannot be here anymore seeing my parents," Greg mumbled into Nick's shoulder. Nick knew that Greg would be upset for a while and he hated seeing the man that he was in love so upset and wearing a lost and sad expression. He wanted to be the one to take Greg's pain and sadness away from him.
