Crystal Ball

Edward's gaze wandered around the vicinity. Nothing much had interested him in the carnival because for him, it was all the same. The same wild colors and beating music that seemed dead to him. Turning his head, he looked back at Alphonse who was busy burying his head under water, trying to catch a small fish with his bare hands. Edward could only laugh to himself at the sight of this. It had been a long time since he saw his brother exert this much passion and effort. It was a good change for him, to finally be this energetic. Edward couldn’t help but feel that his brother was alive again.

Finally, after a few minutes, his brother's head came up from the basin of water. In his hands were two gleaming gold fishes. But of everything that shone that moment, his brother's smile was the brightest. Edward couldn't help but grin as he hit his brother lightly on the head.

"You didn't have you wet yourself you know." Edward muttered with a laugh in his voice. Alphonse grinned back at him as he pulled his handkerchief from his pocket. The brothers laughed together as they waited for the booth keeper to hand over their newly acquired pets. After saying their thanks, Edward and Alphonse decided to visit a friend of Noah who, by the way, was said to make accurate predictions with her crystal ball.

Upon entering a red and purple tent, their eyes centered on a woman clad in Romanian linen whose eyes were covered by her veil. Sitting opposite to her was a blonde haired woman who had seemed to be intrigued with the pictures displaying on the magical crystal ball. Laughing still, the two brothers received a glaring hush from the blonde on the chair, her sapphire eyes stunning them. The two brothers froze in sight. They immediately shut their mouths and exchanged glances. At the sight of his flustered older brother, Alphonse grew bold and decided to walk forward. Edward reached out for his brother’s hand and stopped him with a stern look on his features.

"Don't." He hissed dangerously. Alphonse simply stared at his brother and for the first time, since they came back into the world parallel to theirs, glared at the man. With that, Edward's head bowed down in defeat. Nobody could stop Alphonse from meeting people who he had knew. And by the looks of it, this woman seemed to have been their prime target since they lost their way from home.

So, Edward stood back and watched as his brother boldly walked over to the woman and mystique. Edward could only see his brother make hand gestures towards the woman and the mystique. At first, the two seemed piqued by the sudden holdup of their arrangement. But as Alphonse turned towards his brother and pointed at the man, there was a sudden change of expression in the blonde woman's features. Frozen shock, Edward stood still and felt a chill cruise down his spine as he remained under the gaze of the woman who looked terribly like his childhood friend. Suddenly, Alphonse gestured for him to come closer. Stiffly, Edward nodded and awkwardly walked towards the three.

"He's my brother, Edward Elric." Alphonse started. Edward simply gave them an awkward grin as he scratched the back of his neck. The blonde woman only smiled gently. And the mystique amidst them simply watched knowingly as the three indulged in the moment. After a few seconds that had seemed to last forever, the blonde woman who introduced herself as Winry Rockbell, asked if the two would like to join her watch what the mystique predicted of her apparent future. Alphonse nodded eagerly as he pulled out a chair from the side and sat beside the table. Sighing, Edward followed his brother's example. And as the young man sat down, he stole a glance at the now preoccupied woman sitting beside him and smiled to himself. He couldn't help but think how his old friend would've aged as beautifully as the woman beside him. Suddenly, the eerie voice of the magician brought him back to the present.

"Winry Rockbell, alive and well; loved and cherished; married and a mother." Edward couldn't help but choke on his saliva. Looking back at the three who had seemed more preoccupied by the display of images before them, Edward leaned forward to have a better view into the crystal ball. He couldn't believe his eyes. The pictures were of a yellow house in the country side. A dog had been running around. Suddenly, the scene changed and the three found themselves staring inside a house. With that, Edward couldn't help but gape. He looked up from the crystal ball and toward Alphonse. He looked at his brother, waiting for a reassuring glance. But Alphonse seemed unphased by the display before him. Edward looked back at the crystal ball.

Didn't it look like their house back in Risenbool?

Suddenly, the images stopped in front of a woman sitting on a rocking chair. Her blonde hair fell gently on her shoulders. On her arms was a small bundle. The bundle giggled. Edward's eyes widened as his heart tugged. As the crystal ball looked in deeper into the woman’s bright yet gloomy exterior, Edward couldn't help but feel a tear cruise down his left cheek. And slowly, the ball darkened, leaving the three stunned and dumbfounded. The first to break the silence was the blonde woman whose future had been displayed before her.

"Wow. So, a house in the countryside? Who wouldn't love that, huh?" She laughed half-heartedly, obviously still in shock. Alphonse only smiled at her and nodded, later on stealing a quick glance at his brother. Edward was now leaning on the back rest of his chair and was staring back at the ball. The blonde woman looked back from Alphonse and Edward with a smile on her face. "So, are you guys going to try looking into your future?"

Edward and Alphonse simply looked up at her, and with a purse of their lips, they said, "Not today."

As the woman stood up and said her goodbyes, she left the tent. Edward and Alphonse started to stand up as well. Grabbing their coats, Edward couldn't help but look back at the mystique before him and wonder whether or not he just saw his house in Amestris, or the future of a woman he had yet to know. Similarly, the veiled woman slowly looked up at him. The shadow covering her eyes were slowly disappearing. And Edward found himself staring at her blinded eyes. Then, she spoke.

"You know your what you saw." She softly said, with a gentle gesture to her heart. And as slowly as she looked up, her head bowed down, hiding her facial features. Alphonse simply stared back at the two and smiled knowingly. Edward was simply taken back. And with the mystique's words slowly dawning in, he brought his left arm over Alphonse's shoulders and led the way back to their apartment with a smile grazing his features, because for all he knew, the woman in the crystal ball could still be waiting for him.

Finish. Sorry for a lot of holes.
