Okay, this is only half a story. Reading the first half isn't necessary to understand this story, but I recommend it because it gives a bit more clarity as to how the characters got to this point. In case you're wondering, the story is called Runaway, and the link to it can be found in my profile.
I don't own Dark-Hunters. That honor and prestige belongs to Sherrilyn Kenyon. I also don't own Digimon, Inuyasha, and Chrono Crusade (mini-crossovers, still at heart about the Dark-Hunters. The demon, human formed Nyaromon returns! the others will be made clear later). All I own are the sisters Kamiyama.
Also, beware: Spoilers if you haven't read from One Silent Night on. Especially if you haven't read Bad Moon Rising.
Finding Destiny
Chapter One: Demonic Metamorphosis
They weren't safe. Ever since coming to New Orleans, Shizuka and Anzu had been hard-pressed to find a haven to stay, and found it in the form of a tiny, dilapidated house in a strange street that most resembled an alleyway. It was hard, living as they did, but it was what they had to do. Shortly after their money ran out, Shizuka turned to theft, taking only what she and Anzu needed to survive and nothing more. The police, puzzled by the strange thefts, didn't have any idea who their mystery criminal was.
During their first few days in America, Shizuka had stolen a knife just in case anyone tried to attack her. However, it wouldn't stop what would happen.
Two weeks after Shizuka and Anzu arrived in America
^I'm going out again, Anzu,^ Shizuka said in their native Japanese. It was a bit hard, trying to fluctuate between Japanese and English, Anzu needing to learn it and all, but sometimes Shizuka slipped back into their native tongue.
^Okay – ^ "I…I m-m-mean…o…kay…?" Anzu said in broken English.
"You're doing fine," Shizuka said in her accented English. She was somewhat of a natural when it came to learning languages, and that one had been what she'd chosen for her foreign language class. "I'm gonna go get our dinner for tomorrow night," she said, leaving.
Please stay all right, onee-sama, Anzu thought. She always worried about her sister whenever she went out. If anything happened to Shizuka, Anzu wouldn't have anyone.
How little she knew.
Outside, Shizuka had successfully broken into a convenience store closed for the night, and began swiping bags of chips, sodas, and those little bottles of milk (because two of the first things Shizuka stole was an ice chest and some ice); Lunchables, candy, and various other things also made their way into the basket she was using. She also made certain to take some bandages – just in case. One day, the teenage girl planned to attack a supermarket and actually get some better things for her and Anzu to eat. But for now, the young woman took what she needed and fled the building, running down alleys and side streets to get back to where she and Anzu had set up camp.
"Well, what d'ya know?" a voice said from behind her. "What's a tasty looking girl doin' out here all by herself?"
The speaker was a guy who looked in his twenties, with black clothes and black hair. His eyes were really quite strange, and glinted red. Shizuka backed up a little.
"Who are you?" she demanded.
"Heya, girlie, I'm just passin' through. I'm pretty hungry, though. Mind helpin' a guy out?"
Shizuka dug around in the basket and pulled out a package of hot dogs. "Here, ya go. Take this and leave me alone."
"I'm not hungry for that, you little brat," he snarled. Shizuka began to tremble a little as his eyes seemed to glow with an unnatural light. She knew enough about those kinds of looks to know that he wanted one thing. "Come here," he grabbed for her. Shizuka dodged his grip and managed to pull out her steel knife.
"You don't scare me, you freak!" Shizuka snarled defiantly at her assailant, rushing forward to slash him.
"You should be scared, little girl," he said. "I'm one of the things all you little children fear."
"Yeah, right!" she shouted.
The two of them fought hard against each other, Shizuka to get away, the man for reasons unknown. The fight continued until the man managed to grab Shizuka and bite her in the arm, sinking his teeth in deeply.
"Hey! Let go of me!" she shouted, straining to escape as a strange, burning sensation began in her arm and began spreading. She tried even harder when she realized he was drinking her blood. "You disgusting pig, if you don't let go of me, you're gonna be sorry!" Shizuka snarled, ripping herself away at last. She turned and faced her attacker, clutching her arm that dripped with thick red blood. Strange patterns danced in front of her eyes, as she tried to stay conscious – but something was determined to pull her under.
"Feeling tired, little girl?"
"What have you done to me?" Shizuka snarled. She took a step forward, but fell to her knees. Something in her was trying to wake up, and it wasn't happy.
"I haven't had my dinner yet. Don't worry, you'll be out cold while I – argh!" he growled in pain as his head slid from his shoulders. Shizuka blinked as the man fell to the ground, but no longer looking like a man.
^Oni…^ she whispered in her own language. "Wh-what…?"
"You're lucky I'm feeling in a good mood tonight, little changeling," a new man told her, chuckling lightly. He had long dark brown hair tied behind him, clothes black, brown, and white, a gold collar with a green stone, and the strangest eyes. His left eye was a deep earthy brown, and his right eye was a green that seemed to glow in the darkness. "And that the Gallu I just took out was trying to go back on our deal. Who are you, child?"
"Leave me alone! Just go away!" she shouted.
"Okay, then, I guess you don't need me around," the man said, turning and beginning to walk away. Shizuka doubled over from the pain while he left, it was too unbearable.
"W-wait! P-please…h-help…I'm sorry…"
The man walked back over to her, and crouched in front of the teen girl. "What's your name?"
"K-Kamiyama Shizuka…" she said, fighting to stay awake. There was something about the man in front of her that terrified her more than Chosei ever did. "S-stay away from m-me!" she snapped.
The man sighed. "I'm not going to hurt you, rape you, or kill you, Shizuka. My name is Jaden, and I'm a broker of sorts. I deal with your kind."
"M-my kind? Y-you're not h-human?" she asked.
"First off, before you faint…" Jaden said, leaning over her. Shizuka grasped at her knife and raised it.
"S-stay back!"
"I'm not going to hurt you," he said. "Put that down. If I wanted you dead, I would have already done as such."
Shizuka relaxed a little bit but kept her guard up as he held his hand over her wound, healing it.
"There's always a trade-off, though. You're gonna be pretty sick for a while. Don't worry, it isn't contagious."
"Wait, you…you aren't human?" she asked, still weak from the blood loss.
"Not at all, Shizuka. I'm a demon broker; I barter with demon kith and kyn – that's you – for something from the higher powers."
"But I'm human!" she told him, confused.
"Not anymore. Let me fill you in on something – that thing that attacked and bit you was a Gallu demon."
"You told me that."
"What I didn't tell you was that when you get bitten by a Gallu, you become one. You get infected by their venom and become one of their species."
"Like a vampire?"
"Kinda – only you aren't weak against garlic. The holy stuff depends on the pantheon. Usually. Face it, Shizuka, you're a demon now."
"But…I never asked…I never wanted…I-I…" her last words went unsaid as she fell unconscious. Jaden uncharacteristically collected her belongings and picked the young girl up.
"We don't get to decide our destinies. Very often do we even get a tiny say in them, and even rarer we like them."
He could easily tell where she'd made her home, they were no more than a block away, and her scent led him straight to the run down building that housed the sisters. Silently, he carried Shizuka into the room where Anzu sat asleep in a makeshift chair with one of Shizuka's old textbooks in her lap. The twelve-year-old came awake as Jaden walked into the room.
^Who are you?^ Anzu said, forgetting to voice her words in her broken English. ^What have you done to my sister?^
^I'm not here to hurt you, kid. I saved your sister earlier and brought her here. You might want to help her, she's a little sick.^ Jaden told Anzu, setting Shizuka down on the floor and placing the basket with the stolen food right next to her. ^What's your name, kid? I'm Jaden.^
"A-Anzu…" she attempted in English. Having someone help her sister that also spoke their language eased Anzu's nerves a lot. "Th-thank you…"
"You're welcome," he said, getting up to leave. ^She'll need your help more than ever now, Anzu,^ Jaden said before leaving.
"Onee-sama…" Anzu said, going over to her sister and began helping.
If they only knew what was in store for them.
