Chapter 1: Club invitation

Thank you Satu-D-2 and Raditz Silver for beta reading!

Translations for Japanese words in italics used in this chapter at the end…

She was doing it again, damn it. She was thinking about him. Honestly, it was so vexing and annoying. It always got worse when she didn’t have a boyfriend. Why? Why was it that she could get pretty much any guy she wanted but could never have the one she longed for?

Goten.

The young heiress sighed and kept driving, giving the road her full attention. She needed to stop doing this right now, because she wasn’t a twelve-year-old lovesick little girl in the throes of her first crush anymore. She was almost freaking twenty years old. A grown woman. Possessing beauty, brains, riches and fame. She was going to be a famous fashion and interior designer in a few years and she would be in charge of the design for her mom’s company. What more could a girl want?

In other words, she could have anything she desired. She’d almost never been denied anything she really truly wanted and it was difficult to accept that she couldn’t have what she craved the most.

Yes, Goten.

She really needed to stop thinking about him. It was no use. He would never see her as anything else but his best friend’s little sister while she would always love him madly. He was everything she wanted in a man; honest, funny, handsome, sexy, strong, easygoing and charming just to name a few. Okay, she was getting sidetracked; she was supposed to be trying to stop thinking about him, not reflecting on all the reasons why she was thoroughly and absolutely obsessed with him. Her studies needed to be a priority now and perhaps she should just stay single for a while… This behavior wasn’t healthy; trying to find a replacement for Goten in her heart with anyone who would show her affection, real or otherwise.

Finally, Bra got home and did her best to leave her thoughts of Goten on the doorstep. Frowning slightly, she pressed her hand on the new fingerprint-coded panel her mom had recently installed on the front gate of the living area of Capsule Corporation. Walking into the compound, she wondered what Pan wanted to tell her and the gang so badly she’d canceled their lunch plans to eat at the college’s coffee shop. Her best friend had also asked her to invite Goten and Marron to C.C. That was what had prompted her recent Goten-oriented musings anyhow, the fact she was about to see him for the first time since her latest breakup.

Shrugging, she decided her curiosity would have to wait just a bit until Pan and Goten arrived. Marron was home sick with a killer flu, so she wasn't going to show up.

Sighing in relief, she noticed there were no reporters and paparazzi at the entrance and was glad her friends wouldn't have to avoid them. They often milled around, hoping to catch a member of her family doing something interesting. Imagine if they knew just how very interesting all their families really were!

Grinning at that thought, Bra Briefs walked quickly into the kitchen, deciding she was going to grab some snacks. Her half-Saiya-jin stomach was growling painfully. Pausing long enough to check her appearance on a gold-plated mirror in the hallway, Bra nodded. She looked pretty good, although she would have to re-apply lipstick before they got there. Now she wished she had done more to her hair, being that Goten was coming…

Stop it! she scolded herself. That’s enough!

As soon as she opened the kitchen door, she groaned. Great, now she would have to fight her brother Trunks for refrigerator privileges. She just didn’t feel like going all the way to her room to get something from her own refrigerator and besides, it wasn’t as well stocked as the one in the main kitchen.

"Hey, playboy, buzz off. I wanna get a granola bar!" she complained loudly. Bra knew he hated that nickname. She was in the mood for a squabble and she could always count on her hotheaded brother for one.

"Wait for your turn, fashion girl. You're not even supposed to be here at this time anyway. Aren’t you supposed to be in college learning how to dress and stuff?" he mocked her, all the while totally blocking access to the refrigerator.

Honestly, the "I-think-that-the-fact-that-you-are-studying-fashion-is-hilarious" joke was wearing thin after eight months. But she always called him playboy, so it was even. She enjoyed what she was learning, so it didn't matter that people thought she was an even bigger airhead than before. Or at least she was trying not to let it bother her.

"And you’re supposed to be working... What am I saying, you never work baka," she shot back and before he could retort, she continued, "Pan and Goten are coming over in a couple of minutes you know, and you're sweating like a pig."

Bra smirked at Trunks, making sure to do it just like Tou-san, knowing full well she was baiting her brother to try not to dwell too much on the fact that the object of her girlish adorations and more womanly fantasies would be right in front of her in the flesh in less than ten minutes. Her heart started beating faster and she had to use every single meditating technique her dad had ever taught her to calm herself.

"Do I look like I care? I was training; I need to look good you know and keep up with Dad. Anyway, I already knew they were coming, Goten called my cell," he replied in an annoyed voice.

"Knew what? That you stink? Just go take a shower before I pass out 'cause of your smell and hunger and let me get a damn granola bar!" Bra ordered as she pushed him away. He just grunted because he probably knew that he did need a shower and he had already grabbed a few snacks while she had been complaining and moaning as always.

Oh, the joys of sibling rivalry. How childish and immature they both became when arguing. Listening to them, you would never believe he was 32 and she 19.

Bra grinned to herself as she unwrapped the much awaited granola bar, opened a carton of yogurt, peeled a banana and sat down in one of the kitchen's chairs. Less than ten minutes later, Trunks walked into the kitchen dressed in khakis and a dark blue polo shirt, his hair all wet. That was his usual work attire. He had just started dressing much more casual for work lately. No matter how much their Kaa-san complained, he kept going to work in polo shirts instead of suits.

Trunks was about to speak, most likely to say something to aggravate her, when the intercom buzzed and Pan and Goten appeared in the surveillance TV in one of the corners of the kitchen.

Trunks got up and pressed the intercom button and said, “We’re in the kitchen.”

Both Goten and Pan had security clearance so they were let in right away. Anxiously, Bra waited for them to make their way in.

A minute later, they walked into the kitchen. She stood up smiling, and waited for Goten to pat her back as usual. She couldn't tell what cologne he was wearing, but it smelled heavenly. She almost sighed but caught herself before doing something embarrassing. His outfit consisted of jeans and a tight fitting green T-shirt, his hair all appealingly spiky as always. She averted her gaze after making eye-contact with those gorgeous onyx-colored eyes for a second. I wasn’t even fair, why did the man have to be so damned perfect and kawaii? Not to mention, hot. And why was it that the minute she had turned sixteen, he’d started treating so damned impersonally? He always said hi to Marron with a kiss.

Trying not to get worked up over that fact, she kissed Pan, who was looking very pretty in a short purple skirt, a halter-top white blouse and white sandals, her dark hair in a pony tail. She would tease her about the skirt later. It was such a rare occurrence; she knew Pan had probably dressed up just to impress her boyfriend. He had accomplished what Bra hadn't been able to achieve in the two years they had been best friends.

"So, Pan, what is this about, huh?" her brother was the first to ask, grinning at his best friend and the girl he used to baby-sit as he sat down besides Bra just after she did.

"Well, it's about the weekend. I know it's Thursday already and kinda last minute, but do you guys have any plans?" she inquired. Bra could tell there was something cooking and she was more and more curious by the second.

"I am going out with Tram," Trunks informed them a bit smugly, and Goten elbowed him.

"Is she that hot chick you've been after for ever and ever?" he asked, winking mischievously and laughing cheerily. “She actually made you work for it, huh?”

"Excuse me!" Bra interrupted, annoyed at the little macho exchange. She frowned at them and they smiled back with equal sheepish expressions.

"I don't have any plans... I guess I don't feel like going out that much," Bra said.

"Oh yeah, I forgot it has only been a month since Akira. Sorry about that," Pan murmured. She knew Bra was probably still sad about the break-up, even if it had been obvious that it wasn't working for quite a while before the end. "But still... the thing is, Ben wants to meet my friends and..."

“Ohh," Trunks exclaimed. Immediately, Bra and Goten joined in, whistling as Pan blushed.

"Ben getting serious, Pan-chan? Meeting the friends is almost as serious as meeting the parents," teased Bra. "How long have you been going out now? Four months?"

"Yeah. I want him to get serious," Pan enthused. "He’d better!" she added, laughing a bit. Pan never went for the empty, just-to-be-with-someone relationships, unlike the other three in the room.

"I have nothing to do either. I was just going to rent a movie or something. I also don't feel like going out that much," Goten told the little group, smiling and stretching back. Bra ran an appreciative eye over his strong body before she could stop herself.

Goten and Paris had broken up a few months ago and ever since, he’d seemed a bit down. After all, they’d dated for five years, off and on. No one had liked Paris at the end. In the beginning, everyone had loved her, even though she’d been quite an airhead. She was fun, vivacious and very sweet. Bra had hated her on sight, of course, but for different -and obvious- reasons. However, Paris had slowly turned into the girlfriend from hell that last year. From one moment to the next, she had stopped wanting to hang out with anyone at all so Goten barely saw his friends anymore. She had become possessive, paranoid and just exceedingly annoying. Bra didn’t know what had brought this change but everyone had been glad to see her gone, even though it had been obviously hard on Goten.

“You’re probably going to go out on some very hot date and you just don’t want to say it in front of the girls, you dog,” Trunks jokingly said, leering.

"Hey! I have feelings you know! And you are hurting them," Goten growled, leaning forward getting into his face with a mock-menacing look on his handsome features. Bra and Pan glanced at each other and burst out laughing. Trunks and Goten joined them right away. Trunks might be right and Bra just hated that idea. She always attempted not to find out whom Goten was currently dating, but was mostly unsuccessful due to her idiotic curiosity. She hated feeling the urge to scratch the lucky girl's eyes out and Goten was such a flirt that she would have already maimed half of Satan city’s population by now if she gave in to that impulse.

"Hey Pan, I'm game. What did you have in mind?" Bra asked her friend as Goten smiled, his happy-go-lucky expression beaming again. That grin flustered her, and Bra’s knees threatened to knock together so she crossed them delicately, trying to avoid looking at Goten.

"Well, Ben and I wanted to go to that new club that opened last week," Pan said.

“‘Shake it up?’ Oh yeah, I went there on the opening night. It's an awesome place, you guys would love it. I would definitely want to take Tram there this weekend," Trunks said.

"I don't have a date," Goten and Bra said at the same time. They eyed other and smiled sheepishly. She was hard pressed not to look down or titter in blushing embarrassment.

"Hey, why don't you call a girl up from your infamous little phone-book? I'm sure you could get someone to go with you if you beg long enough," Trunks taunted. Bra snorted, thinking Goten had never needed to beg for a date in his life. Everyone turned to her and she masked it with a cough.

"I don't know... I don't really feel like a date-date, if you know what I mean,” Goten replied, gazing straight at Bra.

"Well, Bra doesn't have a date either. Do you have anyone in mind?" Pan asked, directing her attention to Bra.

"Iie. Not really," she replied, glancing at Goten quickly and then turned to Pan. Pan wagged her eyebrows. Bra inwardly groaned. Great, could Pan be more freaking obvious? Trunks was now glanced at her with an inquisitive expression.

"Hey, let's just go -you and I. What do you say?" Goten inquired, staring at Bra.

Bra was speechless for just a couple of seconds before blurting out, "I would love to!" Then she looked down at the tip of her black boots and blushed. Trunks frowned and Pan smiled.

"Then it is settled. Well, I think we have to leave now, Bra," Pan cut in as she stood up. Bra did the same, smiling at Goten as she struggled to regain her composure. What the hell is wrong with me? she mused. So he asked me to go to the club. It is not like it means anything. Calm down!

"Thanks for the ride," Pan called out to Goten as she dragged Bra out of the kitchen.

Once out of earshot, Pan eyed Bra worriedly. "Whoa girl. I thought you were going to make an excuse to get out of it," Pan scolded as they walked towards Bra's little red Porche convertible. They could all fly, of course, but the older members of the Z clan had long ago decided it wasn’t wise to be flying around, attracting undue attention, so they did it as least as possible. At least that was the plan. Besides, they all needed to have cars to retain semblance of normality towards their neighbors and the tabloids.

"Are you sure about this? You can still back down. It is a bad idea, you know," Pan informed her firmly as soon as Bra backed out of the driveway.

"Well, I couldn't just say no! Besides nothing's going to happen. What I feel for him is impossible. He is twelve years older than me; I've known him too long… besides, I just want to dance with him…" she trailed off.

Bra blushed, remembering the last time they had danced when he had asked her to at Marron’s university graduation party. They’d never danced before, at least not since I she had been five and he had been playing around, and Bra just felt so right and wonderful in his arms, as if she had been waiting for that moment all her life.

Pan gazed at her friend sympathetically as Bra turned on the car and began backing out to the street. "Don't worry, everything will be fine."

"Yeah, I fervently hope so."

Back in C.C.’s kitchen Trunks had been silently staring at Goten for a whole minute. "What?!" Goten finally asked.

"Do you have a thing for my sister?" he asked, a frown on his features.

"Hell no, man... She's your kid sister. What the…? Trunks. You're nuts!" Goten replied fervently, shaking his head and opening his eyes wide at the implication of his friend's words, almost making it sound like Bra would be the last woman on Chikyuu he would date.

Trunks didn't reply for a few seconds and then burst out laughing.

“Ha ha, got you!”

“You baka!” Goten exclaimed, laughing along with Trunks. The laugh was slightly forced, however because for some reason, the idea of feeling attracted to Bra wasn’t as funny as Trunks presented it…

Author’s notes:

I am BEGGING you on bent knees to please review. There is no pride here, just the desire to hear what you have to say about my fic…

I started writing this fanfic back in 2002 and left it unfinished it in 2003 after writing 13 chapters. Real life intruded. I got married in 2004, moved twice, just basically got too busy. Then I got divorced in September of 2007 and decided to continue this story, even if I had abandoned it for almost four years…

Now chapters 14 and on have been posted and the end is near.

I just finished updating and rewriting parts of this fic. I added more scenes between the Vegita family, softened Goten’s attitude a little, -even though he’s still more feral than we’re used to, but there’s a reason for that…- corrected a lot of mistakes and re-wrote certain sections like the one when Goten barges into Bra and Giovanni. Oops, sorry for the spoiler… big grin

This fic is has also been beta-read by Satu-D-2 and is in the process of being betaed by Raditz Silver. Most recently Trynia Merin has helped me with the later chapters. Thanks guys!!!!

In any case, if you used to like this fic and have come back, I would recommend you re-read it because it’s changed some and it has been a while since I wrote it, so you might not remember a l lot of it. If there are still some fans of this story around, I am so very, very happy!

This is by no means my first fic. I’ve been writing dbz stories since 1997 but a lot of them are not publishable -they might be somewhere in the net, to my embarrassment- and this is my first longer continuous fic, well, after the Vega stories which were pretty much connected one-shots.

In other words, this is my baby so pretty please, be nice to it… hehe.
