This is just a little bit of something from me... and sorry its sooo pants!
"Grissom and I take canoe trips. We went looking for bugs in a canoe on our honeymoon."
Isn't it the way every girl wanted to spend her honeymoon. Bug chasing. Again she smiled at the thought. She was no ordinary wife, she was now an entomologist's wife. Of course bug hunting was going to be part of their honeymoon. He wasn't in the least bit fazed at all when he had mentioned it. They were after all going to be going to Paris after this to wait for their research grant. Paris had been her idea to begin with, so it was more than fair that he got to pick something for them to do.
"I think thats us." he mumbled out loud to himself as he perched on the seat opposite her and took the paddle, pushing them away from the bank. There was a little wobbling but it soon sorted itself out. He looked up, giving her a grin that was matched, before paddling off down the river bank. She watched him as he paddled them into the middle of the water. Little insects flew all around them, the peaceful sound of their buzzing and of the soft paddle motions helped her to relax.
The whisper of 'Sara, take a look at this' broke the silence of their journey. He lifted the paddle out of the water and pointed to the insect that was skimming along the top of the water. She carefully made her way to him, not rocking the canoe very much and sat beside him. "It's a Lepidoptera." He whispered out to her as he moved his head closer to hers. "There are only a few Lepidoptera, the butterflies and moths, that are truly aquatic." He paused as he got her attention. "Most of these would normally be found in say the Connecticut River. Especially the Noctuid moths that live as larvae in the stems of aquatic plants. But it seems like we are in luck, my dear, we have some here." He sounded like a small child that had gotten a bike as a Christmas present. She turned and smiled at him, before turning and watching the insects fly all around them.
They sat there watching this rewarding site before moving on. She had moved back to her original postition of watching him. And again he paddled, slowly and gently. He stopped a few times and pointed out more and more insects.
They had travelled maybe a mile downstream when Sara had screamed and fell of of her seat backwards. He immediately stopped paddling and moved over to her carefully, wondering what on earth she had screamed about. Thats when he saw it. "Argyroneta aquatica - a.k.a the water spider". He grinned as he helped her up and acting on a reflex held his hand out to the spider, allowing it to crawl on his hand. He carefully moved his hand to the side of the boat and put the spider back into the water. He knew that the species was the only one that lived in water all the time. The velvet grey appearance of the spider quickly changed as it hit the water. Sara sat back and watched in awe as it changed to a silvery appearance before gliding off to its nest in the water.
She looked up at him embarrassed by the scene she just caused. Thanking God that no one else was around to hear her.
"Oh my god." She whispered as he took hold of her hand and rubbed his thumb across her knuckles. "What the hell was that thing" Sara asked quietly as she continued to watch it swim away from them.
"That, my dear was 'Argyroneta aquatica' also known as the 'water spider'. It is part of the 'Argyronetidae' family that tend to spend most of its life under the water. Not many people see it. They live in underwater retreats amongst the weeds which they fill with air by travelling up to the surface and returning to the retreat, carrying air bubbles around the body." He paused to look at her. Taking her face in his hands and giving her a sound kiss on the lips. "Honey, they can't harm you." He whispered once he pulled away and seen the look of fear still in her eyes. "There's nothing to worry about." He rubbed her cheek again and stood up moving back to his side of the boat.
"You really don't like spiders do you." He asked her as he started to paddle back upstream towards the bank. The shake of her head was the answer to that question. "How did you manage to keep them away from you in the jungle."
"I had you and I had Hank. You got rid of them without realising it. Every spider that came into either the camp or into the text you would pick up. It was like they were pets to you. It kinda freaked me out a little." She paused. " And Hank, well he ate them. Who knew that a dog would eat spiders. I guess I should really be getting used to spiders, but I'm just not. I have no idea why. Maybe it's all those legs. EUGH." She shivered a little as he gave out a chuckle. His wife was adorable. Always seemingly scared of nothing, but in actual fact scared of spiders.
They made it back to the bank, where they made small talk about more of the bugs flying around them. Both slowly got out of the canoe and wandered back to the camp, where the spotted Hank by the entrance way of their tent. Sara burst out laughing when she seen him. "You see what I mean about the spiders."
Grissom's eyebrows shot up when he noticed she was right. Hanging from his mouth was 4 spindly legs. He had obviously eaten a spider.
Sorry about the crappy ending. I was trying to make it fun and happy and exciting.. and all I got from my muse was a big pile of poop and it is 8.20am and I haven't slept!
Maybe an 'M' rated one will be up soon.. tehe! Seems thats what Im best at...
