Chapter Six: Care Bears and Marshmallows

Lilly unlocked the door to Scotty's apartment, carried her suitcase in and straight to the bedroom. She smiled when she looked at the bed and saw a Care Bear sitting on the bed with a gift tag attached to it. Lilly picked it up and read on the tag. 'Lil, so glad you decided to move in. Love you so much, Scotty.' That's when her dad, brother and stepmom entered the bedroom with suitcases and boxes.

Her brother rolled his eyes. "A Care Bear, really sis?"

She smiled and turned to him. "It's Love-A-Lot Bear you dork, I think it's sweet of Scotty to do this."

Paul laughed. "I have to agree with Finn on this one, a Care Bear really?"

Margaret walked over and took the bear out of Lilly's hands. "I agree with Lilly, it's incredibly sweet. This is showing her that he's happy to have her here. A wonderful expression, now let's get out of here and let her put her things away."

Margaret gave the bear back to Lilly. "Thanks Margaret, I'm glad you understand what this means to me. I'll walk you guys out."

She walked with them to the door when there was a knock at the door. She opened the door and there was Scotty's mom and sister-in-law. They both smiled at her and walked in, Scotty's mother had a big pan in her hand. "Hi Lilly, how are you doing."

"I'm good Maria, how are you doing? This is my dad Paul Cooper, my stepmom Margaret and my brother Finn. This is Scotty's mother Maria and his sister-in-law Allie. Please come in, my family was just leaving." After exchanging pleasantries her family left.

Allie smiled at Lilly. "We brought dinner for you tonight, all you have to do is heat it up. We didn't want to step on any toes, but Scotty said you were moving things over and with you unpacking and putting things away we didn't want you to have to worry about dinner also."

Lilly smiled. "Don't worry about stepping on any toes here, food is always welcome. I'm not that great of a cook even though I would love to learn so I could cook for Scotty but I just never had anyone to cook for and when I was younger I never had anyone to teach me, I just met my stepmom recently. Although she is an excellent cook and has offered to teach me to cook some things. He loves his mothers lasgna, I do know that."

Maria smiled. "Well good because I brought lasgna for your dinner tonight. So I just met one brother and he took your little brother to the game, do you only have the two?"

Lilly took cups out of the cabinet and poured coffee for them. "No ma'am, I have one more brother but Michael doesn't get here very often he goes to NYU."

Allie laughed. "So you have a Mike in your family as well?"

Lilly laughed. "Yes but mine is only 19 years old."

Maria explained to Lilly when to put everything in the oven so it would be ready when Scotty got home. They had even brought a salad because as Maria put it she was sure Scotty wouldn't have the ingredients for a salad in his refrigerator, something she was sure Lilly would take care of since she was now living with him. They were sitting down at the table and Lilly looked over at the older woman. "I know this isn't what you want for your son, every mom wants her son married and settled down. I know because Margaret and dad have three boys, she's talked about it for my brothers."

Maria put her hand over Lilly's. "This is not my business, I'm happy that Scotty found someone he could love after Elisa I worried that Scotty would never love like that again. That was a child's love, this is different, the love of an adult and I am sure that one day maybe the two of you will want marriage. But only if that's what you want, not for anyone else. The worst mistake two people can make is to get married for the wrong reason."

Lilly nodded. "Thank you, my mother was married 4 times so I'm just a bit nervous when it comes to marriage."

Maria nodded. "I understand but if the two of you really love each other, one time would work out. There will be rough spots, all couples have them it's just how you deal with them. Now we're going to go and let you get unpacked, I wrote down the instructions for dinner. You have a great evening sweetheart and we'll work on teaching you to cook for my son." Both women hugged her goodbye to her surprise.

Scotty dropped Gibson off right after the game, he carried him in since he fell asleep in the car. He carried him straight to his bedroom and laid him down for Paul, after a thank you from Paul he left the room. Margaret smiled at him. "The bear was a nice touch, she loved it. So who gave you that idea?"

"Actually no one did, I was at the store picking up a baseball cap and glove for Gibson and saw it, I just thought maybe it would be a nice welcome home present. She was so nervous about moving in together, I thought maybe it would help with that."

Finn laughed. "I'm going to stop calling you Scotty and start calling you Marshmallow."

Scotty started for the door. "Well while your calling me that, remember who has the girl wise guy. Margaret, thanks for letting me take Gibson we had a blast. He's a great kid and Em had a great time with him. They kept trying to figure out how they were going to be related when I marry Lil."

Finn looked at him and smiled. "You said when and not if."

Scotty smiled. "Yes I said when and not if, I do plan to marry your sister. Now I'm going home to my girl, catch you guys later." He walked out the door.

Scotty unlocked his door and walked in slowly, the lights were dimmed and it smelled really great like his mother's lasgna. He looked toward the small kitchen table and saw the it was set with candles in the middle. He walked in the kitchen and there was Lil in only his dress shirt and panties at the stove. She looked toward him and smiled. "Hey honey, dinner is ready. Do you want to shower or change first?"

"No we can eat now since it's ready."

"Well just have a seat and I'll get your food over to you."

"You don't have to wait on me Lil."

She smiled. "Let me do it just this once please, I've been practicing and I'm all ready to do this. You can wait on me one night if that makes you feel better."

He smiled and sat down, she had wine poured and everything. Lilly joined him at the table with bowls of salad, he was glad she sat beside him and not across from him. "This is really nice Lil, thanks. So did you get plenty of your stuff moved over here and put away?"

"I had some help from dad, Margaret and Finn. I got enough put away for now but not all of it, I'm afraid that I might have to bring one of my dressers from my place over here but it might make us a bit crowded." She smiled at him. "I loved the bear, it was sweet of you. Thank you for that."

He shrugged. "If we're a bit crowded for now that's okay, we can always find a bigger place later if we need to. I'm glad you liked the bear, Finn theatened to call me Marshmallow instead of Scotty but I told him to remember who has the girl."

She laughed. "That's a good one." They finished the salads, she picked up the bowls and carried them to the sink and then came back with plates of lasagna and garlic bread. "This is your mother's, she dropped it off earlier to help me out while I was unpacking my things. Your mom and Allie have offered to teach me how to cook."

"If they get to be too much just let me know."

She put her hand on his arm. "I like your mom and Allie, they're really sweet. I want to learn to cook for you Scotty, who ever heard of a wife that couldn't cook?" She realized what she said and then stumbled to clear it up. "Not that I expect you to marry me or anything."

He laughed. "Calm down Lil, I did expect us to get married one day and ma couldn't cook when she first married pop. Give him the chance and he'll tell you plenty of horror stories about it." He leaned over and kissed her. "I can cook and I'll teach you right here in our kitchen, it doesn't matter if you learn before or after we get married. The important thing here is that we love each other."

She smiled at Scotty and he could see unshed tears in her eyes. "I do love you Scotty, you're the first guy that hasn't expected anything of me and you know all my flaws."

He smiled. "I love you and your flaws Lilly Rush, now eat your dinner young lady before I have to call ma on you." They finished their dinner quietly, then they cleaned up the kitchen together storing the leftovers for later. After they finished cleaning up he stretched and then laughed as she squealed when he grabbed her and picked her up.

"Scotty, what are you doing?"

"We're going to bed, not that I'm exhausted or anything but I feel like making love to my girlfriend." He put her on the bed and kissed her. "I'm going to take a shower, so no running off while I'm gone?"

She pulled him down for a kiss. "I'm done running Scotty, I thought I proved that already by coming back. I love you and in about a week this will be my only residence since I gave up my lease today." She kissed him again. "Go shower."

He got to the bathroom door and turned around. "So that at the precinct, what Gib said was just a little kid talking right? No baby yet?"

She smiled as she was undressing. "No baby yet Scotty, he heard part of a conversation I had with Mikey and took it totally out of context. We were talking about you and he asked if this was a forever thing and I told him yes, the kind of have kids together and grow old together kind of thing. At least it is for me."

Scotty walked over and slipped his shirt from her body. "It is for me too baby." He smiled and walked into the bathroom. When he came out she was sitting in bed with the covers up but he could tell she had no shirt on and she was reading over a case. He dropped his towel and slipped into bed. She smiled at him and put the case file on the floor before turning to him. He moved over toward her. "I missed you so much while you were gone but I had one regret when you left."

"What was that Scotty?"

"That we didn't make love before you left, I thought maybe if we had that you would feel while you were gone that I loved you somehow and you should come back to me." He shook his head. "It's dumb, never mind."

She ran her hands through his hair. "I felt it, that's why I started cutting conversation short with you. Talking to you made me sad, I missed you so much. Then one day I was talking to you and one of the women in the office smiled at me and asked if I missed my guy back home as much as my face said I did. I told her I missed him more, that we were basically in a new relationship and then I left." She backed away from him a little and looked up. "I showed her and another woman a picture of you and the other woman told me not to worry that you had the other side of the bed filled the day I left."

He moved over and pulled her on top of him. "No Lil, ask anyone I moped the whole time. I missed you so much, I never want to be without you again."

She leaned down and kissed him. "No more talking, it's time for action big guy." He laughed at her but all became serious as he made love to her, and he realized that he really did want to marry Lilly and soon.

The next morning she heard talking and got up slipping on Scotty's discarded dress shirt and her sweats, as she got closer to the kitchen to heard the voice of Nick Vera and she rolled her eyes. Not him this early on a Saturday morning. She walked in the kitchen and saw not only Vera but Will, Kat and Stillman at the table and Scotty was leaning against the counter. He smiled when he saw her walk in. "Mornin baby, want some coffee?"

She kissed Scotty. "I can get it Scotty, so what's everyone doing?"

Stillman laughed. "We were going out to breakfast but we were waiting for the princess to wake up, Scotty didn't want to wake you up."

She laughed. "This isn't weird to anyone?"

Will smiled. "Better than taking him to the ER because someone had to take a boot out of his ass because he was so down while you were gone. But we expected this would happen when you got back and well it was going on before you left too."

"I'll go get dressed." Then she put her head back around the corner. "By the way I was not having sex with Scotty before I left, or I wouldn't have been able to go and the reason for that is my secret."

Kat left the room behind her yelling. "Oh no girlfriend, you are sharing with this part of the class."

When they got to the bedroom and the door was closed, Kat sat on the bed while Lilly gathered her clothes and went in the bathroom leaving the door open. "So you want to know why I wouldn't have been able to leave if I had already slept with Scotty? Well I mean sex, because we had slept in the same bed together a few times just holding each other and it was great."

"Oh yes, you can't say something like that in my presence and not tell me why."

"Have you ever had sex so mind blowing that you want to cry and scream oh yes at the same time? But yet so right that you know any sex you had before was some how wrong? And so beautiful that you really do want to cry?"

Kat was stunned listening to Lilly. "No way, do you see a man with me all the time? If I had sex like that he would not be getting away."

Lilly came out of the bathroom and wiped her eyes with a tissue. "It's like I can feel how much he loves me when he makes love to me, it's so different."

Kat smiled at her. "That's because it is, he loves you."

"Before I left we had said the love you's to each other but I think that was different, that was more of a deep friendship love. This is so scary, but exciting."

Kat nodded. "The two of you are just so right for each other, everyone can see it. Now let's get out there before Vera starts to die from starvation."

They went back in the kitchen and Lilly immediately went over and kissed Scotty again, he put his arm around her. "Okay who wants to ride with us?"

Kat laughed. "I will, I'm probably the only one who can stand being around the two of you lovebirds right now."

They went to a small diner around the corner from Scotty's, he had been there but no one else had and he saw the server that flirted with him all the time. He just prayed that she would not come to their table, he didn't know what Lilly might do. Then he saw her make a bee line for their table.

The server smiled and then winked at Scotty. "Hey Scotty, it's been awhile since you've been here. I was beginning to think you didn't love me anymore." He was nervous, had no idea what Lilly might do.

Lilly smiled and took his hand hers and then put her other hand up to the server. "I'm Lilly, Scotty's girlfriend. He hasn't been home much in the morning to come in here, we've been staying at my place a lot and I don't live on this side of town."

The server shook her hand. "Oh I didn't know Scotty had a girlfriend."

Lilly smiled. "Well we kind of kept it just between us at first, we're on the job together. So I'm starving after last night, are you sweetie?"

Scotty looked at Lilly and smiled. "I sure am baby."

Stillman cleared his throat and laughed. "We'll all have coffee for now, give us a few minutes please?"

She nodded. "Yes sir."

When she left the table Stillman looked at Lilly. "Was that really necessary Lil?"

She smiled. "She was flirting with Scotty, yes it was am I right Kat?"

Kat laughed. "Totally worth it, no one understands that except a woman. I just never thought I would see the day when Lilly Rush's claws came out with a big do not touch sign on Scotty Valens, this is classic. Hands off my man if you want to live."

Scotty winked at Lilly. "After last night I'm starving?"

Lilly leaned over to Scotty. "Yes, I won't go into it with Boss here but yes I'm starving."

Kat laughed. "I have to say when I joined the team I saw this coming, bet I was the only one."

Stillman shook his head. "No, I saw it coming the first time I saw them coming out of the break room and Lilly was giggling at Scotty. Then they were working on a case and he was so optimistic about solving it and it was a long shot at best, match made in heaven right there."

Scotty smiled as he leaned over and kissed her. "I got the one girl in the joint, and I'm keeping her." Lilly smiled through her tears.
