The New Girl at Mode

Story Summary: Crystal Matthews has just been offered the job as the new receptionist at Mode Magazine and will have big shoes to fill even if it means cleaning up the mess of Daniel Meade's assistant Amanda. And things will get complicated along the way. Please be patient with me if it is unfinished as I will try and on a bit each day.

Chapter 1

Remembering My First Day at Mode

Today was an exciting day for me it was a the first day of my new job and a turn of a new leaf for me to leap in to the world of fashion by working for one of the biggest and the best fashion magazines in the world Mode. I had picked out my best clothes for today a high-waisted floral skirt with a black tank top and cute black pumps with a bow and styled my chocolate brown hair to be soft and wavy in a sexy kind of way. I grabbed my red over-shoulder bag and kissed my sleeping fiancé on the forehead and left and went to hail a taxi.

A taxi stopped and I got in "Where to?" the gravelly voiced driver asked me.

"The Meade Building please" I told him kindly as got out a mirror to apply some lip gloss to my lips. "You're not from around here are you?" asked the driver "No I'm not, I moved over from London two years ago with my fiancé." I replied. And nothing else was said on the half hour journey to my destination.

"Where here that would be $35.00" I got out and handed him the money "And have a nice day" and then he was gone and then I looked at the building Christ it was huge and then I walked in to the building and went to press the button for the elevator then the door pinged open and I entered the elevator when I was about to press the button an attractive man in his early thirties with piercing blue eyes as clear as the ocean, with short light brown hair and what looked like a pretty expensive suit, shirt and tie was rushing towards me looked a lot like Daniel Meade. But I thought that I was just kidding myself when I took a quick glance at him again while he stepped into the elevator and I realised it was him Mr. Daniel Meade himself.

And when I looked at him again he looked angry and looked a little pissed off as he was talking on his iPhone.

"Amanda, how could you forget!" he said angrily running his hand through his brown hair "You know that meeting was important and you forgot to tell me about it, we were about to make a deal with Alicia Keys manger for her to appear on the cover of next month's issue and you blew it now Cosmo have taken her, now where are we going to find time to get someone else to do the cover, and has that new receptionist turned up yet, then where is she?" he said starting to get more stressed and clearly not a good start to his day and now I knew that I was already in big trouble on my first day by not being there before him. And I knew I had to say something to let myself be known as soon as he ended the call and put it in his pocket.

So I cleared my throat and spoke "Um, excuse me Mr. Meade if you're looking for your new receptionist" I said kindly him looking at me and still a little pissed "She is standing right here in front of you" pointing to myself as I said it. "Sorry if I was supposed to be here before you I thought was early for work especially if it is my first day here, and I never thought I would bump into my boss on the first day of the job either I'm really sorry Mr. Meade" I said apologetically.

"Hey no need to apologize about that the old receptionist Amanda she's my assistant now used to be late all the time, but tomorrow try and be here at least two hours before me" said Mr. Meade it seemed that he now had cooled off since I opened my mouth.

"Of course Mr. Meade I will be in extra early tomorrow I promise" I said back to him with a with a small smile.

"OK, well and stick to it, and don't call me Mr. Meade it makes me feel old and uncomfortable, just call me Daniel" he said back to me.

Then the doors to the elevator opened to the modern beauty that is Mode and went through the round archway where I saw the round orange reception desk and went to the side of it to open the door, put my things down and turned on the computer and grabbed the blue-tooth ear piece and put it on.

"Um I hate to ask you to do this on your first day but would you mind covering for my assistant Amanda she has done a vanishing act again, she does that a lot" asked Daniel.

"Um, sure I don't mind" I replied back with a smile.

"Great, and don't worry about reception I'll get someone else to do it" said Daniel in return.

I got up and followed Daniel to where his office was and sat down and looked down at the desk in front of me. It was such a mess and so disorganised why someone would work in this mess was beyond me.

"Um, hey could you first send a message out for an emergency meeting to start in ten minutes all departments, then after that could you get this expense report for last month's issue down to accounting they need it pronto, then join me in the meeting when you get back and take some notes down from it for me" handing me the the piece of paper across from his desk to me.

"Of course Mr Me... Daniel I will get to it" I replied starting to walk away with the report.

" Oh, how rude of me I never asked what your name was since I will be seeing from time to time if Amanda doesn't show up" he asked me

"Crystal Matthews, Crystal with a C and not a K, will that be all now Daniel" I answered back.

"Yes that seems to be it at the moment" said Daniel putting his head down and getting back to work.

As I was about to leave he stops me dead in my tracks before I could open the office door "Oh, wait after the meeting could you get me a coffee and bagel with cream cheese, then sort out all my appointments Amanda has seemed to of got all of them mixed up, that's it now I swear" he said quickly as he noticed the look on my face that I really wanted to get started.

"Ok good" then I left his office and sat down at the desk and started typing up the message.

Then I heard clicking of heals and turned and saw a young woman dark hair Latino skin wearing, a blue skirt and blazer, sinched in with a belt and wearing a pearl necklace with the letter B then she spoke when she noticed me.

"You're not Amanda?" she asked looking at me confused.

"No, I'm Crystal the new receptionist, nice to meet you" I replied looking back at her.

"I'm Betty junior features editor I used to be Daniel's Assistant by the way nice to meet you, let me guess Amanda has done a disappearing act and you're covering her on your first day here, that is so typical of her" She asked me looking concerned.

"Yeah apparently Daniel I heard him on the phone to her in the elevator sounded pretty pissed at her said something about Alicia Keys meeting that she was supposed to remind him about, and now Daniel has just got me to send out a message to everyone for an emergency meeting in ten minutes" I said back to her.

"Oh, ok then nice to meet you I better get back and prepare for that meeting, thanks for telling me" she said as she rushed off.

I got up from the desk and went down to accounting and handed in the expense report and then went and grabbed a pen and notebook from my bag and headed over to the meeting area and sat down next Daniel where everyone else from the other departments gathered.

"The reason I have called this meeting is that we lost Alicia Keys for the cover and know we are going to need some new ideas on who we could use for the this issue and new clothing ideas and theme of the shoot, so go get me some ideas and come back here at 11:30" said Daniel looking around at everyone as he spoke, he seemed so passionate and caring in his work and I saw why most of the women in here could not stop looking at him, he was attractive, charming and a little dumb but maybe some thought that was cute, the way he smiled at anyone and I left for the cafeteria to go and get the bagel and he asked for earlier.

"Here is your coffee and your bagel with cream cheese" placing it down on his desk in front of him and started walking back to my desk to start on Daniel's appointment schedule.

"Crystal, do you have those notes that I asked you to make during the meeting?" Daniel asked coming out of his office an hour later. "I completely forgot to ask you for them" he said leaning against the desk, as I grabbed the notebook out of my bag.

"Here, you go" I said giving him the notes and then he returned to his office.

"Crystal, can you come in here for a minute" Daniel called ten minutes later

"Yes Daniel, have I done something wrong?" I asked looking at him waiting for a reply which seemed like forever.

"Did you write these ideas down during the meeting earlier this morning, they are amazing, how you came up with all this, the ideas for clothes, theme of the shoot?" he said looking at me sounding really surprised.

"I was just thinking of someone famous like Joss Stone for her I was thinking hippy chic like in a meadow or near the sea with old Volkswagen van, and you could do an interview on her life and how music has changed it so much for her, it's just a few ideas that's all" I replied

"Well, how about I put in your idea in the meeting, and see where it leads to, how about that?" Daniel asked kindly.

"Sure, just let me know how it goes, the meeting is in ten by the way" I answered back, and then looked at my watch and tapped it showing it to Daniel.

Daniel went to the meeting and pitched my idea to the rest of the magazine. The last time I had an idea at another magazine, for the person I worked for, they just threw it in the bin, said I had no imagination. But this was something else, a man that I had not long met and loved my idea was doing this for me and I felt grateful that he was willing to do it for me.

"So, how did it go, did they like any of the ideas?" I asked nervously following him into his office, with my hand behind my back with my fingers crossed.

"Well, they have taken some of your ideas on board, like the old van idea and hippy chic idea, some people were thinking instead of Joss Stone, they were thinking Taylor Swift someone who is more new current to the music scene" Daniel looked at me happily as he said this.

"That sounds great, thank you for putting it out there for me, I really appreciate it.

And I went home that day it felt really good to achive something, to put into a magazine and on my first day, what did not relise that in three months my luck was going to change when Daniel made me his assistant.
