"Hey..." Michael paused to close the door behind him, turning to face Madeline with an awkward smile. "How're you doing, Ma?"

Maddy frowned at Michael, seeming wary of his presence. Only a couple months had passed since Michael had returned and relations between the two of them were still rather strained.

"I'm fine. What are you doing here, Michael?"

Michael deliberated for a moment before walking up to her and giving her a strong hug. Maddy froze, surprised. After a long minute, Michael pulled back.

"Just wanted to wish you a Happy Mother's Day. That's all."
