Chapter One
Harry had spent most of his vacation up already, though most of it wasn’t filled with anything new to him. He had been having a normal boring summer, with almost nothing to do. His mind sometimes wandered and thought about what had happened at the end of his forth year, and how Cedric died, but Sirius had wrote him and told him not to think that on several occasions, so eventually his thoughts didn’t linger on that.
His summer had consisted of sometimes just lying around, and thinking what it would be like in the wizarding world, but he knew that wasn’t going to happen until September first, when he took the train back to Hogwarts.
For the rest of Harry’s summer though, the Dursleys were going on a vacation to some random place. They decided to leave Harry at Ms. Figg’s house not caring how he would manage to get to the train to school. Dudley was still on a diet, so Harry had been receiving weekly packages from his friends. Fortunately, this meant Harry was content when it came to food, unlike Dudley.
Harry now packed his school trunk back up. He emptied his floorboard under his bed, and packed up all his prized possessions. Among these possessions were his racing broom (a Firebolt), his invisibility cloak, and a photo album that contained pictures of the parents Harry never knew. Once he was finished packing he put his trunk in the car along with Hedwig, his owl, who was in her usual cage. Harry’s Uncle Vernon drove him to Ms. Figg’s house and then drove off only saying not to let her find out about his fellow freaks. Harry knocked on the door just as Ms. Figg opened it and gave him a warm smile.
"Hello Harry dear."
"Hello Ms. Figg" Harry said unenthusiastically, but he smiled slightly back, glad that at least he would not have to live with the Dursleys for the rest of the summer.
With that, Harry brought his trunk inside and put it in the guestroom where he would be sleeping. He then made his way down the steps and into the day room.
The first couple days went by quietly. He would eat, sit around and do homework, sometimes help her with some chores and nothing else but just sit around and listen to her tell stories.
But then, on the third day, something very odd happened. Ms. Figg called him into her day room after dinner. She was sitting on an old chair by the fire, smiling as he walked in. From her outer pocket she pulled out something that made Harry gasp with surprise. Ms. Figg, the elderly lady that had always watched him when he was little, was holding an oak wand.
"Is that a…?"
"Yes."
"But you’re not a… all this time you cant have been a… a…"
"Yes Harry, I am a witch. Now, don’t ask any questions, I will explain everything. The night you managed to escape Voldemort, Dumbledore came to me. I had retired from the ministry of magic and was looking for a house in the muggle world. He asked if I would be your secret keeper. You do know what a secret keeper is, don’t you?"
"Yeah."
"I gladly said yes. It was not just a regular old job you see. I was one of your mother’s friends. I was the only witch that lived close to her in the muggle world. When the Dursleys were looking around for a baby sitter I immediately took the job."
"So all these years you have been my secret keeper?"
"Yes. Dumbledore and I both thought it would be best to wait until you were older to tell you. Now off to bed, you have a day full of surprises waiting for you tomorrow and what I just said to think about. It’s not everyday that you turn fifteen."
So Harry went off to bed wondering what the surprise would be, but also what Ms. Figg had just told him, still amazed at what she had told him, and what he had never suspected. No wonder Dumbledore had said that the he had to go back to the Dursleys, he was perfectly safe there as long as Ms. Figg never told Voldemort where he was, and Harry knew that Ms. Figg would not betray him after she was friends with his mother.
Harry woke the next morning and hurried down stairs to the kitchen. There were five owls perched on the table all carrying letters and packages. Wow, Harry thought to himself.
"You had better open them all quickly and get some breakfast before our guests arrive."
Harry then untied all the letters and packages from the owls and they left. He started at the first one while wondering who would be arriving. When he opened the letter he immediately recognized Hermione’s neat writing.
Dear Harry,
I hope your doing well. I had a great time in Bulgaria with Krum. I got your Birthday present in a Quidditch store there. It is a book that updates itself. Whenever something new is found out about Quidditch, additional pages appear. See you soon!
Love,
Hermione
Harry opened the package and read the title of the book; New and Old Quidditch: a self-updating guide. Wow, he thought as he opened the next letter, which also contained a smaller envelope, recognizing Ron’s writing he read.
Hey Harry,
Happy Birthday! The envelope contains a gift certificate to Honeydukes in Hogsmede. The package is a gift to you from Fred and George. They said it’s a parchment piece that whenever something is being said behind your back it appears on the parchment. Cool huh! See you soon.
-Ron
Harry put the package and letter aside and opened the next card. It was from Hagrid.
Harry,
Hope them muggles are treating you ok. If not remind them of that time I gave that ruddy cousin of yours’ that pigs tail.
-Hagrid
The package contained a large assortment of all Harry’s favorite candy. There were chocolate frogs, Bertie Bott’s Every Flavor Beans, and licorice wands. Then next letter Harry opened eagerly. It was from Sirius.
Happy Birthday Harry! I can’t send your present by mail so you’ll get it later. See you sooner than you think,
-Sirius
Harry put that letter under the others so Ms. Figg wouldn’t see whom it was from. He didn’t know whether Ms. Figg knew if Sirius was really innocent or not. The last letter was the usual letter from Hogwarts that contained his new book list, and other information.
"You better go clean yourself up before our guests arrive."
Harry went upstairs, washed his face, and brushed his teeth. He then went back downstairs. Ms. Figg called him into the day room. To Harry’s surprise Ron, Hermione, Sirius, and Remus Lupin were all standing there.
"What are you all doing here?"
"We came to give you a birthday party, I mean cause you have never had one," responded Ron.
Then Ms. Figg spoke, "I know about Sirius being innocent Harry. Also, I knew Lupin, and he has something to do along with Sirius."
"Wow."
Sirius then handed Harry the Marauder’s map saying, "I made some adjustments. Now, Ron and Hermione are bold dots, your enemies are red, and teachers are blue."
"Thanks!"
So Harry ended up having the best birthday ever. They chatted the rest of the day. Then they had a large birthday cake, and butterbeer. Harry said goodbye to Lupin who then apparated. Ron, Hermione, and Sirius spent the night. There was no doubt in Harry’s mind that his day had been great, and with that he drifted off to sleep.
