"Kurama," Hiei greeted as the red head walked up to him.
"Hello, Hiei," Kurama said. He looked where his friend was looking, over the vast forest that surrounded the temple.
"How long as it been?" Hiei asked. He looked at Kurama, "Since she left, I mean."
Kurama lowered his head and frowned, "Almost eighteen years."
Hiei nodded glumly. He scoffed lightly, "And we haven't changed at all."
Kurama nodded. Their friends had all gotten old on them, but since they were demons, they were unchanged. Except for Kurama. He was slowly turning back into Yuko, since Shuichi was human. His hair was streaking with the white of Yuko's, and his eyes were slowly bleeding from their emerald green to the harsh gold. He didn't have the ears and tail yet, but it wouldn't be long. Shuichi was almost forty years old. Not exactly old in human terms, but with his life, old enough. People blame the constant stress of his life being a top-of-the-art teacher, single, and living alone to be the reason for his going grey early. He let them believe that.
Hiei frowned again. He was still short, black haired with white streak and red eyed. Yukina hadn't changed at all either, even though she had married Kuwabara. They were content with the fact that he'd die before her.
"We do this every year, and it never gets any easier," Hiei said.
Kurama nodded, "We seem to be the only one's who believe she'll still come back."
Hiei nodded.
"She will," Kurama said. "I know she will."
Someone sighed behind them. They turned to see Yukina. She smiled softly at them, "Still mourning?"
The men turned completely to face her.
She sighed, "Come inside. Have something to eat with us at least."
Kurama smiled and shook his head, "Thanks, but no thanks Yukina. I'm just going to head home."
She frowned, "You're always eating by yourself. It's not good for you."
"Mama!" The three looked back at the temple. A young girl stood, leaning on the railing. She had her father's hair pulled back in a high ponytail and her father's eyes. Behind her was a boy, with his mother's hair and eyes. His hair was pulled back in a loose braid. Neither were older than sixteen.
The girl was waving, "The rice is done!"
Yukina nodded and called back, "Okay, I'll be right there Ayame!"
Ayame nodded and ran off. She grabbed the boy's wrist and dragged him with her.
"Go in and eat with your family," Kurama told her. He started walking off, "I'll be fine."
Yukina watched him walk off and said to her brother, "I worry for him. I really do." She looked out at the forest, "And for Itami-chan."
Hiei looked up at her, "You never told us what you found out. If you did we might be able to. . ."
Yukina shook her head, "It would only make things worse for you and Kurama."
Hiei looked after his friend. "What could make it worse for us, Yukina? What could possibly make us feel more like failures?"
Yukina looked at him, "You didn't fail in anything."
Hiei clenched his fists, "We couldn't make her confident enough to stay. We couldn't convince her that we loved her. She left us, Yukina."
His sister nodded, "If I were in her position and had all that had happened to her happen to me, I'd run with this news, too." She set her hand on Hiei's shoulder, "It had nothing to do with us not loving her, and everything to do with her not loving herself, Hiei." She squeezed his shoulder and walked back to the temple.
Since Master Genkia had died, Yukina ran it. Kuwabara worked as someone who helped the delinquents get back on the right track. They had three kids. Shauron was seventeen. Ayame and Rune were both sixteen. Ayame loved her older brother with all her heart. She also loved to drag Rune everywhere with her, even if he didn't want to go with her in the first place. Ayame was loud and obnoxious, like her father. Shauron was respectful and kind, but had his loud side. Rune was quiet. He tried to make it like he wasn't even there. Yukina did an excellent job running the temple and a family.
Hiei sighed and looked over the forest again. After awhile longer, he took off into the darkness. He caught up with Kurama and walked with him in silence for a few minutes.
Hiei groaned, "There's been nothing to do lately."
Kurama looked at him, "Nothing in the demon world?"
Hiei shook his head, "Everything's quiet. I'm so bored that it's not funny." He stuffed his hands in his pockets, "I wish something would happen."
A flock of crows leapt from the tress a ways into the forest. They were all calling alarms, as if they had been startled.
"You were saying?" Kurama asked.
Hiei was looking at the crows, "Let's check it out."
"Seriously?" Kurama asked.
Hiei nodded. He smirked and stated, "It's been awhile since we had a decent work out."
Kurama looked at him for another second before smirking himself. They both took off into the forest.
