A/N: I'm baack! Updating Yesterday's Feelings was just the start I needed to get cracking on all my fics! (Also, I just broke up with my boyfriend so I'm home more than twice a week again so that's also a factor).
So, this is the revised first chapter of Beautiful Disaster and I am 100% satisfied with it and excited to get going on the second chapter! In fact, I might start working on the second chapter as soon as I post this up!
Also, the fifth chapter of Headfirst for Halos is almost ready to post! I've just got a few more scenes to write. And I am currently re-writing Novocain and slowly working on the ninth chapter of Second Heartbeat.
Oh, and I actually deleted the old Beautiful Disaster and uploaded this as an entirely new fic because, as Takato the Dreamer (whom I love & appreciate, by the way) brought to my attention, when you re-post chapters it doesn't let the same person review twice! And I of course want feedback on my new chapters from people who have read the old version!
...oops, I'm dumb and didn't realize until I deleted it that it won't alert people who have it on story alert that it's updated. Does it even do that if I replace a chapter with a new one? I don't know. Hm.
This is an AU fic, as usual. The boys (as well as Mimi) are in their senior year. Here are their school schedules if you're interested and want to keep up:
Tai: Math, Language Arts, Lunch, Law/Politics, Photography
Switches to: Language Arts, Photography, Science, Lunch, Math
Yama: Math, Science, Lunch, Law/Politics, Phys Ed
Switches to: Language Arts, Photography, Guitar, Lunch, Math
Mimi: Math, Language Arts, Lunch, World Religions, Photography
Switches to: Math, Photography, Language Arts, Lunch, Fashion Design/Cosmetology
DISCLAIMER: I don't own Digimon or any of the characters, or anything related to it. Unfortunately, I am not making a profit off of this.
Beautiful Disaster (version 2)
Hi, I'm Taichi Yagami. Yamato Ishida, a gorgeous blond wonder, is the love of my life. It hasn't always been that way, though. In fact, we started out on some pretty rough terrain... that is, when I finally got the chance to be with him for more than five seconds.
Curious? Somewhat interested? Just plain nosy? Then listen up; it's a long story...
It was the second day of second semester, in my senior year. I was sitting in my new homeroom class with my chair tilted back, my hands behind my head, and my feet on the desk when my friend Mimi Tachikawa walked in.
"Hey," she said, sitting down beside me. "I heard there's a new kid in our class."
I raised an eyebrow. "Yeah?"
At any given time, Mimi knows every piece of gossip possible about anyone and anything. She's usually the first to know, and if she isn't she gets caught up pretty damn fast. Mimi is probably my best friend. I have a ton of acquaintances, mostly due to being the captain of the soccer team, but not many close friends. My last best friend, Daisuke Motomiya, ended up sleeping with my girlfriend behind my back. As you can imagine, we don't talk anymore.
Mimi has naturally brown hair. Last year, she decided to dye it bubblegum pink. For some reason, instead of looking ridiculous, it actually suits her. That's probably why she knows so many people; they see her and are intrigued by her hair, so it starts a conversation. Of course, there's also the fact that she's on the cheerleading squad.
Myself; I've known Mimi since I was twelve. The only other person I'm still friends with that I've known for that long is Koushiro Izumi- and I've actually known him for longer. Our parents knew each other, so we met when we were in kindergarten. Koushiro's a year younger than me but he's pretty much a genius, so he skipped a grade and now we're always in classes together.
Anyway, back to mine and Mimi's conversation.
"It's a guy," Mimi informed me. "I haven't seen him yet, but I hear he's hot."
I'm bisexual, by the way.
"Alright, everyone!" called our teacher, Ms. Gardler. "Settle down and take your seats!"
That didn't really do much good- at least not immediately. Eventually, though, everyone stopped chatting and sat down when they were ready. Ms. Gardler is one of those teachers who doesn't know how to control a classroom full of kids.
"I have an announcement to make," our teacher said. "We will be having a new student joining us for the rest of the school year."
Except for the new grade nine kids, we don't usually have new students in the middle of the school year. So, we were all pretty intrigued. We waited for the teacher to go on, patiently.
...and waited. And then waited some more.
"Well, where is he?" Someone finally asked impatiently.
"That's a very good question," the teacher said. "He should have been here minutes ago."
At almost that very second, the door opened and a boy walked in. He looked at the teacher coolly, as if staring right through her, and flicked a few strands of hair out of his eyes.
"Judging by your ridiculously thick glasses, I'd say I'm in the right room," he said in a bored tone. "This is senior math, right?"
Our teacher gaped at him in shock as the class watched with interest. Obviously the guy had balls.
The guy also had messy-on-purpose blond hair that hung just below his chin, and startling sapphire eyes. His skin was rather pale, which made his eyes stick out even more, and he was wearing all black with a skateboard and a sweater tucked under his arm. The skateboard was black as well, with various writing and designs on it. A few silver chains hung from the black jeans he was wearing, which were tight but not as tight as I would have liked them to be, and his tank top revealed a thin layer of gauze wrapped around one of his elbows- probably because of a skateboarding injury. Now, my description doesn't do him justice at all but believe me when I say he was hot.
Our teacher finally managed to shut her mouth, only to open it again.
"Young man!" she exclaimed. "I do not allow new students to walk into my class, late, with a skateboard and blatant disrespect!"
The boy shrugged and said nothing, looking like he had not a care in the world.
Our teacher stared, waiting, for a little while longer and then turned around and began shuffling some papers- I guess so she didn't look as stupid. She's pretty spineless.
"They warned me about you," she said, almost under her breath, then added in a louder voice, "Yamato Ishida, isn't it? Go find a spot to sit down."
Yamato shrugged and happened to walk right beside my desk as he headed for the back of the class. I didn't give a second thought to turning around to try and check out his ass after he passed me, because I knew other people were doing it too. He ended up sitting two desks behind me, beside an empty desk, and I must admit I was disappointed he wasn't sitting in front of me; that meant I couldn't stare at him during class.
"What a hottie," Mimi murmured as our teacher began her lesson.
I nodded in agreement. "Fucking sexy, is what he is."
"I assume that means you're going to go after him."
"Do penguins fly?"
Mimi gave me a look. "Um, no."
"Well... whatever, I'm still going after him."
Yamato wasn't in my second period class but apparently he had the same lunch as Mimi and I because, at third period, we saw him down the hall at his locker pulling out a hat and gloves. He put them on, along with the sweater he'd been carrying around, and headed for the closest set of doors. I, of course, dragged Mimi along with me to discreetly follow him and we found him skating away in the snow when we got outside.
"Jeez, let's go back inside, it's snowing," Mimi said with a wrinkle of her nose.
"Who the hell skateboards in the snow?" I wondered aloud.
"Your new boyfriend does, apparently," was Mimi's response.
People were talking about Yamato all throughout lunch. I knew Mimi would store all the gossip she heard, so I didn't bother to listen to half of the things being said. All I knew was that I was interested in getting to know this guy. It wasn't just his looks, although that was a big part; instead, I was drawn as well to his attitude. Pretty faces are everywhere, but captivating personalities are not. When I meet people I get vibes about them, and I had a feeling that Yamato was going to be the most interesting person I'd met in a long time.
Mimi and I parted after lunch seeing as she's not in my fourth period class and when I got to class, I nearly did a little fist pump when I saw Yamato sitting at the back of the room. I contemplated walking over to him and trying to start a conversation, but Koushiro was in that class with me and he grabbed me when he saw me walking past my seat (the seat beside him).
"Where are you going?"
I glanced at Yamato, then back at Koushiro, then shrugged and sat down. "...nowhere."
"Good, because I need to talk to you about something."
Koushiro may be one of the smartest people I know, but he sucks when it comes to girls- and guys, since he's bisexual too.
"Alright, what's the deal?" I asked him.
"Well... there's a girl..."
"Yeah, yeah. Who is it this time?"
"Actually..." Koushiro looked a little guilty. "You probably won't be happy about this."
I looked at him in question.
My eyebrows shot up. "Sora?"
"Nothing happened," Koushiro rushed to clarify. "I just... well, we sit together in one of my classes and-"
"Don't do it, Kou."
"I know you don't like her, but we've been talking and she seems so nice..."
"Do you not remember how she went out with me for almost two years and then cheated on me with Daisuke?"
"Maybe she's changed," Koushiro suggested.
"I highly doubt that. The only thing that's changed is that she's probably slept with half the guys in the school by now. You want herpes or what?"
Koushiro didn't answer for a moment, doodling on a piece of paper silently. Eventually he sighed.
"You're right. I should probably stay away from her."
"Good. You're way too good for her."
Koushiro just shrugged- he doesn't think he can get anyone, so he probably didn't even believe me.
"There's someone else, too," Koushiro added.
"Who?" I asked curiously.
"Ooh," I teased. "Hey, wait- what about Jyou?"
Koushiro's been obsessed with this guy, Jyou Kido, for over a year now. They're both super-smart and really shy around girls and really into each other, you can tell, but they're both too scared to act on what they feel.
"I still like Jyou," Koushiro admitted, "a lot. But there's another guy I find really attractive."
"Yeah? Maybe you can use this guy to make Jyou jealous. Who is it?"
"Well, I haven't spoken to him or anything yet, so I don't even know if I'd like his personality-"
"Yeah, I get it; you just think he's hot. That's usually how things start out. So who is it?"
"Well... there's this new guy in my science class..."
A new guy? It was highly doubtful that there were two new guys- and if there were, Mimi would have known.
"Wait, you've got science second period, right?" I asked Koushiro.
He nodded. "Yeah, why?"
"Is he blond?"
Another nod. Yup, it was him.
"He's in our class right now, Kou," I informed him.
Koushiro turned around and spotted him, and I had to pinch him to make him turn back around because he was staring so hard. Jeez, apparently I wasn't the only one mesmerized by him.
"How did you know who I was talking about?" Koushiro asked, seemingly surprised.
"How often do we get a new student? Besides, I've got my eye on him too," I added.
"Well, I get the feeling he's more your type than mine... since my type is Jyou."
I couldn't help but snicker. Koushiro knows he's stuck on Jyou; I don't know why he bothers bringing up anyone else, ever.
"Oh, shut up," Koushiro said. "One day."
"One day, what? You'll finally gather the balls to ask him out?"
Koushiro fully ignored me. "Have you talked to him?" he asked, clearly speaking about Yamato.
"Not yet. But, trust me," I declared as the teacher began to start the lesson, "he's going to be mine."
The next day at school, everybody was talking about Yamato. There were rumours circulating left, right, and center- and most of them were pretty far-fetched. I heard from one person that he'd done some time in jail, then I heard that he'd set someone's car on fire, and then I heard that he'd knocked out the principal of his last school. I don't know where the rumours were originally coming from, but I doubted any of them were true. I planned to find out soon anyway, because my goal was to actually talk to him that day.
Yamato walked into homeroom twenty minutes late. Sure, students come five minutes late sometimes. If you come in ten minutes late, you know you're walking thin ice and if you're fifteen minutes late, you'd better have a damn good excuse. So, obviously, our teacher wasn't very pleased.
"Young man!" she exclaimed in a shrill voice. "I hope you have a good reason for walking into my class at this time and disrupting my lesson!"
She hadn't really begun the lesson yet, but whatever- I guess she was just trying to prove a point. Yamato wasn't fazed, though; he just gave her a blank look that said "fuck you" and then headed to his seat. Needless to say, our teacher didn't like that very much.
"You now have detention with me after school!" was her punishment.
Yamato didn't even give her the time of day. Completely ignoring her, he pulled his iPod out of his pocket and put his earphones in. Even I was impressed; Yamato really wasn't afraid to do whatever the fuck he wanted.
Our teacher sputtered for a few moments, stunned, then finally all-but-shouted, "Go to the principal's office!"
With a shrug, Yamato got up and practically sauntered out of the classroom – which gave me a few moments to admire his body. Mimi nudged me and, when I looked at her, she pointedly looked down. I followed her gaze to find a note she'd written.
'Whoa,' was all it said.
'Whoa' was right. It looked like I had my work cut out for me.
I didn't see Yamato at lunch, but everyone was talking about how he'd told Tania Bridges, the proclaimed 'hottest girl in school', to "fuck off and go suck a cock". Not only did this convince me that he was probably gay, but it also made me pat myself on the back for having such good taste. If the hottest girl in the school wanted him, that meant he was smoking- and when I did manage to seduce him and claim him as my own, I would make sure to give Tania Bridges a big smug smile every time I walked by with him.
When I saw Yamato in fourth period, he was sitting in the back corner of the class listening to music with his arms folded over his chest. His sharp blue eyes met mine for a split second and I had to stop myself from licking my lips. The fire in his eyes only made him sexier. Those eyes were challenging me, for sure, and I couldn't wait to take on this challenge.
...in fact, I was going to make an attempt right then and there.
Koushiro opened his mouth to say something to me as I approached my seat and I could feel his confusion when I walked right by. However, as I neared Yamato, it became clear exactly what I was doing and the whole class went silent. Yamato was even staring at me, although his eyes were hard and cold. For most people, that would be a warning sign not to come any closer. For me, it was an invitation.
I walked right up to his desk and placed both hands on it, leaning casually on the desk and flashing Yamato my cockiest grin.
"I'm Taichi, in case you were wondering."
Yamato glared directly into my eyes. "Well, now I know what name to look for in the obituaries."
I let out a (rather charming, if I might say) laugh, which I'm sure pissed him off even more. "You're a friendly one, aren't you? So, I heard you got kicked out of your last school."
"I walked out."
"Even better." I leaned closer and I swear his hand actually twitched as if he were holding back the reflex to punch me. "So would you like to show me exactly how naughty you are after school?"
The silence in the classroom was deafening and Yamato stared at me levelly before I saw a tiny smile tug at his lips. That was my only response, however, because he then stood up and walked right past me. He bumped my shoulder rather hard on the way past and I turned to see him walk straight out of the classroom. Everyone stared after him and I lifted my eyes to the clock, realizing that it had been over ten minutes since the bell had rung. Some teachers at our school have a reputation for being late, but no one ever really walks out until it's been a really long time and the teachers usually end up coming just before we leave anyway.
Someone spoke up. "Hey, he's got the right idea! They can't expect us to wait here all day for them!"
"Yeah!" someone else exclaimed. I don't think Yamato meant to start a trend or anything, but he had. Everyone began grabbing their things and filing out of the classroom- some of them giving me a punch on the shoulder or a pat on the back as they did. Apparently I'd amused quite a few people by approaching Yamato.
Well, I definitely wasn't going to stay if no one else was. I grabbed Koushiro out of his seat. "Come on."
"Everyone's going, Kou. Let's go."
Koushiro gave up fighting me and grabbed his stuff, following me out of the classroom. Once we reached his locker where he put his books (and mine) inside, he addressed my attempt with Yamato.
"I can't believe you said that to him," Koushiro said with a laugh of disbelief. "You're lucky you didn't get a black eye."
"I was ready for it," I admitted with a shrug. "But he actually looked kind of amused. I guess the Yagami Charm works on everyone."
Koushiro rolled his eyes.
If that wasn't a step forward with Yamato, I didn't know what was. I'd expected a punch to the face and instead, he'd practically smiled at me! This was going to be easier than I'd thought.
"So I talked to Yamato today," I told Mimi smugly in Photography class.
She looked at me with surprise, seemingly impressed. "Really? What did you say? What happened?"
"I walked up to him and introduced myself, and told him that he should come over after school if he felt like showing me how naughty he was."
Mimi sighed, shaking her head at me and giving me a mildly disgusted look. "Gee, you really know how to charm people."
"For your information, I do! He gave me this little smile and everything."
"And then what?"
"Well, then he left because the teacher was ten minutes late. But he obviously wants me."
Mimi snorted. "Um, yeah. That definitely says 'I want you, Tai'."
By the next morning, I was the topic of many conversations. Everyone was talking about what I'd said to Yamato and his reaction- or, lack of reaction. For that reason, I walked down the hallways smug as sin. I'm used to a healthy amount of attention- after all, it comes with being a jock- but this sort of attention was even better.
...that is, until I noticed that Yamato had seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth. I didn't see him in first or fourth period, and I hadn't seen or heard about him at lunch. I'd asked Koushiro if Yamato had been at second period and the answer was a negative.
"Did you see Yamato today?" I asked Mimi in our last period class.
Mimi shook her head. "I heard from Kimberly that he changed his classes."
Mimi shrugged. "I don't know, but he's got lunch fourth period now. I can find out, if you really want- a few girls know it. Some of these girls know an incredible amount of information about him. They know where his locker is, probably some of the numbers of his combination, which stairwells he takes to get to class, the fact that he's skipped last period every day since he got here until today... I think they'd make good spies."
"Or good stalkers. Don't they have anything better to do with their lives?"
"Hey, it's benefitting you. Don't complain."
"Fair enough. Yeah, get his schedule for me. If he thinks he's going to avoid me, he's very wrong."
"What are you going to do, switch your whole schedule around?"
I grinned. "Exactly."
Within the first two weeks of the semester, you're allowed to change your courses- and, fortunately, my guidance counsellor likes me. Mimi had Yamato's schedule for me by Monday morning and I went to see my guidance counsellor at lunch. He changed my classes for me and Mimi ended up changing some of hers, too. With my new schedule, I had lunch fourth period and I'd only have one class that wasn't identical to Yamato's, which was my third period class; I had Science and he had Guitar. Also, I only had Mimi in two of my classes; Photography and lunch, and lunch isn't technically a class. Koushiro switched a couple classes around too and ended up being in my Science class and in mine and Mimi's Photography class. Instead of having a lunch period, he had a spare last period.
On Tuesday, which was when the changes took effect, I threw a smirk in Yamato's direction every time I saw him. I think he realized what I'd done, because he met every smirk with a scowl- which just made me smirk even more. It would take much more than him switching his classes for me to give up.
"I heard he's amazing at guitar," Mimi told me at lunch. "I know a few people in his guitar class and apparently he blows them all away. My friend Yuki told me that she heard he's in a band, which would explain it."
"A band, huh?" I mused. "That's hot."
Speaking of hot, I wanted to jump Yamato when he walked into class on Wednesday. He was wearing amazingly tight black pants complete with chains, zippers, and everything else from a bondage fantasy along with a tight plain black wifebeater and a black vintage leather jacket which went amazingly well with the pants. It was one of the hottest things I'd ever seen. His hair was perfectly messy, too, almost like he'd just come from a major sex session. I pictured him on my bed in that exact outfit, and imagined all the fun I'd have helping him remove it.
…I had to snap myself out of that fantasy pretty quick or I'd have to excuse myself to go to the bathroom, if you know what I mean.
The first time I got Yamato alone was in Photography class. There are only two people allowed in the dark room at a time and, of course, I volunteered to go into the dark room at the same time as Yamato. I figured I could get an "accidental" grope or two in, seeing as I could blame it on not being able to see well enough. So I went in and began to pretend I was actually doing something but just before I could think of something witty enough to say, Yamato spoke instead.
"Wouldn't it suck if you attempted murder and failed?"¹
Now, of course I knew he was trying to freak me out but shivers ran down my spine anyway. When someone says that to you in a dark room, it's hard not to get creeped out. So instead of staying to try and cop a feel, I exited the dark room pretty quickly after that. So much for my glorious time alone with Yamato.
That Friday, we had to pair up in Photography class to use some of the equipment. I managed to conveniently make myself the only other person without a partner besides Yamato so, naturally, we were paired together. I didn't try to make it a secret that I was staring at him and it was only a few minutes before he raised his sharp sapphire eyes to mine in a glare.
"What the fuck is your problem?"
"I don't have a problem," I replied calmly.
"Well I'll give you a fucking problem if you keep staring at me."
"That's a shame, because I'm really enjoying the view."
He grabbed the collar of my shirt and leaned in- to threaten me, I guess, but I was hoping for a kiss instead- but the teacher interrupted before anything further could happen.
"Boys! What's going on here?"
Glaring at me the whole time, but letting go of my shirt, Yamato said, "I don't work with partners."
The teacher looked like she didn't really want to interfere in the situation (she'd probably heard about Yamato already) and she said, "Alright, well; Yamato, you can work alone. Taichi, you can work with another pair and be a group of three instead."
Like that was going to stop me. Yamato's every action just made me more and more attracted to him, and more determined to make him mine. I worked in a group with Koushiro and Mimi after that, of course, but I still found ways to get close to Yamato. Every time I needed to get something from a different part of the room, I would make sure to walk right by him and check out his ass each time. I could feel him stiffen every time I got close and five minutes before the period was over, I decided to rile him up a little more. I walked right up to the counter where he was cleaning up and said suggestively, while leaning inappropriately close and staring at his crotch,
"You need help with that?"
The next thing I knew, I was holding my face and Yamato was walking out. Mimi and Koushiro immediately ran up to me to make sure I was okay, which I was. There would be a bruise on my face tomorrow morning for sure, but whatever- it was worth it.
The whole class was staring, confused and mildly surprised, and the teacher was standing at her desk looking like she didn't know what to do. After all, Yamato had left so it wasn't like she could yell at him. The bell rang just then, and that's probably why she decided to just let it go. I swear, the teachers in our school are more scared of the students than the students are of them.
"Tell me that wasn't part of your plan," Koushiro said to me as we walked to Science together.
"Hey, I know what I'm doing," I insisted. "He's just playing hard to get."
Koushiro didn't look convinced.
At lunch I saw Yamato heading through the hall with his skateboard so I attempted to follow him but lost him in the crowd. When Mimi found me, she told me she'd seen him skateboarding off in the snow again. Oh well, I'd catch him sooner or later.
The weekend flew by and by Monday, the bruise on my face was hardly noticeable. My parents had nagged at me for "getting into a fight", but whatever- I considered it one small step in the right direction. I wanted to get under his skin (and under his clothes) and I was definitely succeeding, even if the only emotion I had really evoked so far was anger.
At lunch on Monday, Mimi dragged me to sit with a table full of her cheerleader friends. Most of them I knew, since they'd been at all of the soccer team's games, but that didn't mean I liked them. It didn't take me long to figure out why Mimi had done it, though; within minutes, they were dishing about Yamato.
"I heard his ex-girlfriend had to be committed to a mental asylum because he messed her up so badly," Mimi's friend Mischa said. She then sighed dreamily. "But he's so hot..."
"I heard his own parents are afraid of him," another one of Mimi's friends- Leslie, I believe- added.
I rolled my eyes discreetly and blocked out their mindless gossip. I knew Mimi was trying to get me information I could use, but all these girls were discussing were crazy rumours. I was just about to excuse myself from the table, because I couldn't take it anymore, when one of the girls' voices rang out above all the others'.
"I heard he's gay."
The whole table went silent and everyone, including me, looking at the one who had spoken. It wasn't anyone I recognized and I made a mental note to ask Mimi what her name was so I could grill her more about where she got her information from.
"You know Anya?" another girl spoke up, making the whole table look at her. "She and Suzy followed him one day at lunch and she said he went to a trailer park and some guy let him in and they hung out for the whole lunch period."
"Wait a minute," I felt it necessary to interrupt. "they stayed there the whole lunch period?"
"They were curious," was her defence. Wow.
Well, these girls were clearly insane, but they'd supplied me with some information that was worth thinking about. Sure, I hadn't really doubted that he was gay (yeah, yeah, gay-dar and all that shit), but it was nice to hear that there was speculation from others about it. This guy he hung out with at the trailer park could possibly be his boyfriend and I would rather him not have a boyfriend, but whatever- I get what I want, and I wanted Yamato. If that meant I had to break him and his boyfriend up, so be it- if the guy was even his boyfriend, that is.
Mimi's friend who had spoken up about the 'gay' rumour turned out to be named Heather and Mimi was nice enough to tell me where her locker was so I could have a little chat with her. I tracked Heather down after school by going straight to her locker after last period.
Heather was already at her locker and when she saw me approaching, she put on a bright smile and greeted me with a chipper "Hi, Tai!"
Apparently she knew who I was.
"Hey," I said, leaning against the locker beside hers. "What's up?"
"Oh, not much, how about you?" Heather seemed overly excited to talk to me and I decided that she was probably one of the younger cheerleaders.
"Not much... so where did you hear that Yamato was gay?" I asked, cutting to the chase.
"Oh, that? My sister's friend heard it from her brother, who heard it from a friend who went to the same school as Yamato."
Great, information that had been passed down four times. That usually means the information isn't very accurate. Still, I had to ask,
"And what exactly did he say about Yamato being gay?"
"Well, apparently the 'girl' he sent to an asylum was actually a guy and it was because the guy was obsessed with him and stuff and threatened to commit suicide if Yamato wasn't with him, and stuff like that. I think there was something about a restraining order, too. And they said they saw him making out with a guy before, and that a male teacher got fired from his last school for fooling around with him, and that he's actually got a boyfriend right now. I don't know if it's true or not but he did turn Tania Bridges down, so... yeah. I know most of the girls are hoping he isn't, though."
I nodded. "Yeah. Well, thanks for the info. See you around."
I turned and walked away, ignoring the confused and disappointed stare I knew she was sending after me. I wished I had a more reliable source than a friend of a friend of a friend but since I didn't, I had to go based on that- and I had to admit, the things Heather had told me sounded more believable to me than the rumours I'd heard about him being in jail. Sure, the stories were probably exaggerated, but I had no problem believing that some guy had been obsessed enough with Yamato for Yamato to get a restraining order against him or that Yamato had fooled around with a teacher. These things happen… and when you're as hot as Yamato, they're even more likely.
Yamato didn't come to school on Tuesday and I had a nice chat with the person who sits next to me in Language Arts class, eventually convincing them to switch seats with Yamato for me. It was funny; part of the reason they said yes was because they'd heard about my few incidents with Yamato and they were curious to see if I'd actually ever get anywhere with him.
On Wednesday, I had a nice big smirk on my face when Yamato walked in and saw someone else sitting where he had previously sat. His gaze immediately turned to me and I cocked an eyebrow at him, then pointedly looked at the seat beside me. I could practically see his jaw clench and he narrowed his eyes at me, but walked over and sat down.
As soon as he sat down, I realized that his usually flawless skin was now bruised on the right side of his face, which was the side facing me. It looked like a pretty nasty bruise, starting at his jawline and spreading across his cheekbone, while also creeping up near his ear. Also, the bridge of his nose looked a little bruised. I guess I'd been staring for longer than I thought because he turned his head to glare at me.
"Why don't you take a fucking picture, it lasts longer."
"I would," I said matter-of-factly, "but I forgot my camera at home."
I guess he wasn't feeling creative because he simply replied with, "Fuck you."
"Name a time and place," was my response.
His eyes flashed with anger and annoyance. "I swear, I will break your fucking neck if you don't shut the fuck up."
I whistled lowly. "Ooh, feisty- just the way I like 'em. Your boyfriend is a lucky man."
Something in his eyes changed and he seemed to stiffen visibly.
"What did you just say?"
His voice sounded dangerously on edge and I could feel the tension radiating from him. So, the boyfriend was a touchy subject. Okay.
As I was trying to think of something else to say, the teacher clapped his hands loudly to get the attention of the class so he could start the lesson. I decided to let this one go and turned away from Yamato, facing the front of the class. I hadn't gotten the reaction I'd wanted- but I had gotten a reaction, and that was enough for now. Plus, now Yamato probably thought I knew some personal shit about him and would come after me to find out exactly how much I knew. That would give me the chance to find out for sure if he had a boyfriend or not.
Sure enough, he took the opportunity to have a little "talk" with me in Photography class. We were taking turns in the dark room again and when I went in, this time he was the one to volunteer to go in with me. We entered and almost immediately, he pinned me against the wall and growled,
"What the fuck do you want?"
His body was pretty close to mine and I resisted the urge to grab him and pull him fully against me. Instead, I said in a controlled tone,
"Right now or in general?"
The daggers in his eyes would have killed me instantly had they been real. "I'm not in the mood for your fucking games. What the hell do you know about Luke?"
Whoa. His boyfriend- who sadly existed and was named Luke- was seemingly a very touchy subject.
"I know I'd look a hell of a lot better on top of you than he probably does." Oops- I'd meant to back off, not make yet another asshole comment.
That earned me a hard whack to the side of the head, which I admit I deserved. Yamato then snarled, again,
"What the fuck do you know?"
"I don't know anything!" I exclaimed. "I was just making a fucking comment!"
He stared into my eyes, studying me for any sign of a lie, and then grudgingly let go when he realized I was telling the truth. Shaking his head, he let out a dry laugh.
"You're fucking crazy."
I shrugged. "Yeah, so I've been told."
Yamato laughed again, but this time it startled me because it was a real laugh. Yamato shook his head at me again, this time with a hint of a smile on his lips, and then left the dark room. I stared after him for a few good, long seconds before following.
Wednesday must have been my lucky day. After the incident in Photography class, I was ready to back off for the day and leave him alone. However, fate intervened.
Mimi had some cheerleading duties to attend to during lunch so I decided to seek out my friend Jodi from the soccer team. Usually he's around the back of the school hanging out near the soccer field with some other guys from the team, so I headed back there. Who did I find instead?
Yamato was leaning against the school wall, a cigarette between his lips and his skateboard at his feet. He didn't even flinch when he heard the door open and close and I watched him for a moment, admiring the sight before me. His cigarette rested loosely between his fingers and he brought it up to his lips, letting his eyes flutter closed as he took a drag. I don't know what it was about Yamato but his every movement mesmerized me. If he hadn't turned to face me, I probably would've stayed there watching him for as long as he was out there.
One eyebrow rose delicately and instead of speaking, Yamato just gave me a look that said "What the fuck do you want?"- I guess to spare him from actually having to say it again. Feeling particularly ballsy, I sauntered over to him and stood next to him, leaning back against the wall casually as well.
I ignored the look that Yamato was giving me and said, "So, why did you get kicked out of your last school?"
I could tell he was debating between answering me or not but eventually he replied, "Like I said, I walked out."
"Yeah, yeah. Why'd you leave, then?"
"Because everyone was fucking stupid." Yamato took another puff of his cigarette and then added, "But then again, so is everyone here."
"Except for me, of course," I said, and Yamato snorted.
"Yeah right." He took one last deep inhale of his cigarette and then threw it on the ground, squishing it with his shoe. Actually meeting my eyes, he said, "I guess I do have to give you some credit, though; besides that skank that asked me out, you're the only other person that's even tried to talk to me."
"Well, that's got to count for something, right?"
Yamato put one foot on his skateboard but before he could skate away, I asked,
"Where are you rushing off to?"
"None of your business," was the predictable reply.
"What if I want to make it my business?" I challenged.
Yamato looked at me and shook his head in mild disbelief. "You really don't give up, do you?"
"Not until I get what I want."
I stared him determinedly in the eye and he stared back, and it felt like a whole minute before his lips curved into a little half-smirk and he shook his head yet again.
"You're fucking crazy." Yamato stepped onto his skateboard and before he skated away, looked over his shoulder and added, "See you around, Taichi."
Fuck, the way he said my name was hot.
He skated away and I turned around to go back inside the school, my purpose for coming outside completely forgotten. I whistled a little to myself as I walked down the hall, earning myself a few strange looks from my peers- but I could care less. I had just had a somewhat civil conversation with Yamato and it hadn't ended in me getting punched. That was cause for celebration.
I pulled out my cell phone. 'Meet me at my locker after school', I texted Mimi. 'We need to celebrate'.
I knew she'd ask why and then tell me I was an idiot once I revealed the reason but I didn't care. I was well on my way to landing Yamato and if that wasn't cause for celebration, I didn't know what was.
¹ - This actually happened to my friend... she was in the dark room and some guy said it to her.
