The rising sun in the distance painted the sky a vivid blend of gold and yellow-white as its light filtered through the lazy clouds of the morning, that still hung low enough to form a fog around nearby hills. The chill of night still clung to the air, as a gentle breeze blew across the two sitting figures staring out across the damp grass.
A soft sprinkling of rain fell in a mist of dew, filling the crisp air with the scents of wetted rock and green plants. A distant echoing cry from a colorful bird was all that broke the early morning silence, and even that seemed to go unnoticed by the travellers lounging in wicker chairs, grasping icy glasses of an orange drink.
Sandy hair was tangled and mussed, and faint pink-and-white pajamas were rumpled and wrinkled and as loose as if they were often slept in, and rarely washed. Beside, unruly dark hair stuck out at odd angles, and matching blue-ish pajamas were half unbuttoned to expose a wiry frame to the cool morning.
Neither seemed concerned with theirs or the other's state of dress, simply observing the rare beauty of the morning before them. No words were exchanged, and neither felt the need to speak any. A free hand fell into the space between them, followed by another. A thin film of steam appeared just over the horizon as the hands found eachother and interlinked in the perfect stillness around them.
It seemed as if the hazy dawn could stretch on forever, the beautiful, complacent peace that had settled around them banished away thoughts of running for their lives, and harrowing escapes. The steam darkened to a gray plume of smoke over the horizon, and the golden hue of the clouds above deepened.
Dawn came only once a decade to this planet, a cleansing fire that burned away all that the temperate nights of the planet fostered. Animals and natives alike lived primarily underground, and only emerged during the last half of each decade, when the planet bloomed into brilliant colors and beautiful melodies.
Despite the looming sun, the pair did not yet bother to to stir from their comfortable rainy positions, it would be a half-hour still before it would reach where they had set up a small table and chairs just outside of a small blue box.
His hand squeezed hers, and she turned to match the grin on his face, before they turned back to watch the approaching dawn continue to paint the skies. Pulse pounding adventures, manic laughter, narrow escapes, and near deaths at the hands-or tentacles-of nefarious galactic tyrants and petty meglomaniacs?
Those were just the bits in between.
