She doesn't fit against his sharp edges
And Lucius knows it.
He had a wife, after all, just as jagged
(as scared – her eyes a mirror of his fear)
And as cold as he was.
A marriage as s m o o t h and solid
They were strong.
It had taken a war to destroy them,
A war to divide them:
It had s h a t t e r e d them and their strength.
And their marriage,
Or what was left of it.
She is fragile,
For all her blasé words and boldness;
the resilience of youth.
She is innocent.
(More so than he can stand)
The truth of his past;
The s h a m e,
Would crush her like a
Malicious foot on a flower.
His to look at,
Never to have,
And certainly not his to hold.
(He's too tired to escape that fickle old friend,
and the time to try has long since passed)
Of his present is that she
Deserves better than yesterday's man.
...And yet, he couldn't let her go.
After all those days in darkness,
(Weeks. Months. Years.)
He couldn't turn from the warmth and
Tenderness of her touch.
He didn't want to. Not really.
Her bright blue eyes see the world anew.
When Daphne takes his hand and asks,
Shyly, if he wants to be with her,
To share her life, her journey,
Lucius can't say no.
It's because she doesn't fit against his sharp edges.
Daphne fixes them.
She put him back together:
As good as new – almost.
For she is his new beginning.
