Peeta Mellark stared up at the sky, hope alight in his minds' eye. Mud swallowed and surrounded his body; pain engulfed and burned his upper left leg in a most torturous way.
He knew that he was going to die, but only one thought burned strongly in his mind. It was a thought that carried him through his aches and pains.
As Peeta's eyes gazed upon the starry sky above him, he dared to whisper:
Katniss is alive.
