What is Justice? When does it become Vengeance? When does Vengeance become Retribution? And Retribution back to Justice again? A circle of gray that we try to draw lines in which there is none. So tell me what is Justice?-Me
Something I thought of when I played through the game, was what happened so wrong, where does one become another? Can we truly say? Based on my first play through on Dragon age 2. There might be spoilers later on if you haven't finished the game so read at your own risk :)
Also I am a sickly person, so chapters might be short and not done in a timely matter, I will try to update on a decent schedule and try to make the chapters decent.
Edit: I edited the chapters. I hope I got rid of most the error's and that it is easier on the reading.
Chapter one: Meeting Thera
Healing never used to be this tiring. It was never this hard. It always came naturally to me; healing was what I did. But now I feel like I am carrying the entire of Thedas on my shoulders when I heal. It's because he doesn't approve. He wants out. He doesn't want him helping these people because we have other business. It hurts now having to concentrate on holding him in the back of my mind and heal, or just to think. Thinking has become hard too. I am so tired now, I feel like I have aged so much.
Why are we still here? We need to help the mages. Elissa will help! She was a friend.
No we can't go back…we killed those men; she could never look at us the same…these people need me.
Justice? Anders? Or Vengeance, He doesn't know who he is anymore, or if he is all these things at once. He now knows this was a bad idea. Sadly, it was now too late, and there is nothing he can do.
Anders finished healing the boy. The parents were smiling so he smiled back but unlike theirs his was hollow.
Why does this hurt?
Anders felt his body grow weak and his legs start to go buckle. It was like the weight on his shoulders was finally crushing him. He knew he shouldn't be pushing himself as much as he has. He was working at the clinic until he felt like he was going to keel over. No matter though, he knew these people needed him. Anders needed them to feel human. As the boy's father started to help him to a place to sit, he felt someone enter. Anders could feel their magic. Like a crashing wave, carrying him out to sea. He came and took over. Anders felt sorry for the intruder.
"I have made this place a sanctuary of peace and healing! Why do you intrude?"
Anders' voice was just a small underline in the booming voice that came from him. He saw them through his eyes that were once his own.
There were four of them. One of them was clearly a mage. Her hair was curly, and black like a raven's feather. Her eyes were dark like the moonlit sky. She was what someone he would consider cute. Innocence emanated off her. She was the source of the magic. She was a mage like he was. The woman behind her looked strong and powerful, stronger than most men he'd known. Her hair was bright orange and loosely pulled back. She had a Templar's shield, but Anders couldn't feel the lyrium coming from her. Her features, alone, marked her s solider. Then there was the dwarf; though he looked nothing like the dwarves he'd had dealings with. This dwarf clearly wasn't drunk. He had no beard, and was, mostly well dressed, like a surfacer. Anders also noted the finely made crossbow on his back. Never had Anders seen such craftsmanship before. Finally he saw her. The one in front, she had a beautiful face. Her hair was a deep auburn and was loosely held back. The shorter ends were covering portions of her face. Her eyes a dark green like emeralds, and she wore a look of regret that hung over her like a dark cloud on a rainy day. Anders couldn't make out the rest of her features, as she wore heavy armor that concealed such things.
As Anders watched the party, he felt Justice fade back as he re-took control. Their eyes were on him, burning into his skin. It was plain they were thinking what to say, how to approach someone who must look like a mad man.
"Are you the Gray Warden Anders?" The red head asked him. She was soft spoken, her voice betrayed her appearance of a battle-harden warrior.
"Did they send you to bring me back? I won't go. Those bastards made me get rid of my cat…poor Ser-Pounce-A-Lot." Anders really did miss that beast. He had been a gift from Elissa.
"You had a cat named Ser-Pounce-A-Lot?" By the look she had on her face, Anders couldn't tell if she was mocking him or genuinely curious of the cat. The dwarf let out a small chuckle, but was silenced when the mage shot him a death-like stare.
"He was a gift. He almost got torn apart in the deep roads once. Swatted at a Genlock, drew blood. But the Wardens made me give him to a friend in Amaranthine. They said he made me…too soft."
She gave him a sympathetic look that put him at ease. He realized she wasn't about to ridicule him about one of the only friends he had, outside of the spirit inside him.
"I can't believe they even let you bring it into the deep roads!"
"Aveline!" The woman in front silenced one of her companions.
"I am sorry. My name is Thera Hawke. This is my sister Bethany. The woman next to her is Aveline and this man here is Varric." She said taking a small bow.
"She forgot to mention incredibly handsome." Varric said smiling up at Thera. She responded with a sigh and a small smile.
Tell them to leave. They are no help.
No, they might need me…I want to have a place!
"So why are you here? You still haven't told me yet." Anders asked, looking coldly at Thera. Thera and her companions were clearly not in need of healing, and none of them seemed to be Templar or one of their spies, so that only left the Coterie trying to swindle him for protection.
"I am planning on going with an expedition into the Deep Roads. I was hoping you could lend us your maps." Thera said with an almost pleading voice. Anders had to admit it pulled at his heartstrings their heartstrings.
"My lady I would die a happy man if I never have to hear of them again. Let alone go back into them." Anders said shaking his head, starting to pace in front of her. The subject of anything Warden still made him uneasy.
Thera let out a sigh of slight defeat. But she knew she needed his help if she wanted to better protect her sister from the Templars. She already lost her father and her little brother Carver. She wasn't going to lose Bethany as well.
"Please, your help could save lives; I need this to help my family." Thera said taking a small step forward. "I will pay you if need be…but please help us."
Anders thought on it for a moment. As much as he wanted to turn her down, it was not like the maps were such a big deal to give away.
"A solid for a solid then. Help me with a task, and the maps are yours." Anders said finally. There was a half smile on his face. He thought the idea that he wouldn't accept coin would scare her off. He wasn't expecting the answer he got from her.
"Fine I will do it." Thera said without skipping a beat. Aveline shot her a worried look. It was clear her friend didn't like the fact she was jumping head long into something she knew nothing about.
"You don't even ask for my terms? What if I asked for the Knight Commander's head on a spike?" He asked trying to see what this overly willing woman's reaction would be.
"Is that what you want?" Thera ask, but it was clear she would die attempting it if he said yes.
Was she so desperate she would try something so close to impossible? Anders felt terrified of such desperation. It was such desperation that brought him to the path he walks now.
"You tell me. I need your help to save a close friend of mine from the Circle and the Chantry. I set up a meeting to meet him tonight at the Chantry. His name is Karl. What do you say?"
"I will help you." She turned back to Bethany. "I would not want to see a mage suffer such shackling."
Anders couldn't help the wide grin on his face when he heard such words.
"Meet me there come nightfall. I will be waiting."
"Agreed, and I promise I won't keep you waiting to long." She said with a small teasing smile.
Anders felt his cheeks heat up from a blush.
She is trouble, a bad idea.
She is all I have right now. She is my only hope.
