Prologue
Ivy was trapped, both mentally and physically. She couldn't get out of this terror, she wanted nothing more than the Doctor to appear and get them out. But he wasn't there; she didn't know where he was. She heard The Voice talk about him and keep telling her he's dead but she knew he wasn't. Until she saw him she wouldn't believe what The Voice told her.
"Face it Ivy, you are all alone, give in!" The Voice said.
"I'm not scared" Ivy said.
"But I know you are, I can sense it" The Voice said.
"Please just stop, please" Ivy said desperately.
"HA HA!" The Voice laughed.
Ivy heard the laugh wrap round her head and encase her into fear again.
Chapter 1
"If you set foot on my land again I'll shoot you dead!" the farmer said.
"Ivy keep running, he doesn't sound like he's joking" The Doctor said.
"What do you think I'm doing? Making tea?" Ivy said.
They were running back to the TARDIS which had landed right in the middle of a field. Usually that wouldn't matter but this was on a farmers land and he was not happy about it. They had materialised in the 1700's which proved that they had stepped on some fragile toes.
"No need to be sarcastic" the Doctor said "Get in!" Ivy ran straight into the TARDIS and didn't stop until the rails stopped her. She stood panting over the railings until the Doctor dematerialised the TARDIS. "I don't think he was very happy about our visit"
"You think? Dear me Doctor you do like to land us in trouble don't you?" Ivy asked.
"Sometimes trouble just follows me I can't help it" The Doctor said.
Ivy rolled her eyes and went to sit below the TARDIS control console. The Doctor continued to press random buttons and the TARDIS kept breathing slowly in and out.
Ivy was still trying to catch her breath when she sat on the floor. She looked up through the glass floor and watched the Doctor do his dance around the console. She smiled at him.
"Where you taking me now?" Ivy asked.
"Not too sure" The Doctor said not taking his eyes off the console.
"You never know. When will I see River again?"
"Again, not too sure, she just pops up"
"Ok, then can I make a request?"
The Doctor knelt on the floor and looked down at her.
"You may"
"Can we..." all of a sudden the TARDIS tossed Ivy and the Doctor off to the right. Ivy felt extremely dizzy, something she hadn't felt before in the TARDIS. "Doctor? What was that?" Ivy asked.
"I have no idea, you ok?" the Doctor shouted.
"Dizzy"
"Did you hit your head?"
"No, Doctor the whole room is spinning" Ivy said getting worried.
"Hold on" He appeared above her again. She tried to look up at him but he wouldn't stay in the same place.
"Doctor, can you stay still please?"
"I am still" The TARDIS shook violently again. Ivy felt incredibly sick then, she tried to shout for the Doctor but nothing came. "Ivy? Are you ok? I feel dizzy now" He looked down at Ivy. She was transparent. "Ivy!"
Ivy was lost in the sickly and dizzy feeling she hardly heard the Doctor calling her name. Ivy looked at her hand and it was disappearing, rapidly.
The Doctor couldn't get down to her, he was too dizzy. Ivy vanished quickly and there was nothing he could do.
"Ivy!" the Doctor shouted before he disappeared himself.
Chapter 2
It was pitch black when the Doctor woke up. His head was still spinning slightly but he managed to stand. What had just happened? Where was he? And where was Ivy?
"Ivy? Are you there?" the Doctor shouted. Just an echo. The Doctor saw this as a good thing, if there was an echo he was inside somewhere, otherwise the sound wouldn't have bounced back to him. "Ok so I'm inside somewhere, don't know where but I'm inside, that's a start"
"Very clever!" someone said.
"Who are you?" The Doctor asked calmly.
"No-one important, you may call me The Voice for now" It said.
"The Voice? Not a very good name" The Doctor said.
"You can talk Doctor"
"Ok 'The Voice' where's Ivy?" He asked.
"Not here"
"Then where is she? I would like to know"
"That's all you need to know Doctor"
"If you've hurt her!"
"I haven't hurt her Doctor; my torture is quite different to what you have seen before"
"Torture? Who are you? I demand to know!"
"HA HA HA HA"
The Doctor looked around him but he still couldn't see anything. The laughing faded and was replaced by utter silence. He got out his sonic screwdriver and used it to try and see something. He pointed it out in front of him but he still couldn't see anything.
"If I keep walking I'll eventually meet up with a wall of some sort" he began walking slowly in one direction with his sonic out stretched in front of him.
There was literally nothing he could see, not even a small bump under his feet. The whole place was empty. As he was walking he began to think Ivy was, was she OK? And what did The Voice mean by torture? The Doctor just kept walking.
"Ugh my head" Ivy said coming round. "Doctor? Where are we?"
"I don't know Ivy" The Doctor said.
"Are you ok?" Ivy asked.
"Fine, but dizzy but OK" The Doctor answered.
"I can't see!" Ivy nearly screamed.
"Neither can I, its pitch black here"
"So I'm not blind?"
"Don't be silly Ivy of course you're not" The Doctor said.
"Sorry"
"It's OK; you're scared it's understandable"
"I'm not scared, but being in pitch black doesn't help my nerves, along with not being able to see you" Ivy felt a hand touch hers.
"I'm here, just cause you can't see me doesn't mean I'm not here" the Doctor said. The hand left Ivy's. She felt more reassured.
"Why do I feel like the black is pressing on me?"
"That's the fear, you feel like it is pressing on you and that you can't stop it, everyone feels like that from time to time"
"Even you?"
"Even me"
"So are we gonna try and get back to the TARDIS?" Ivy asked.
"How? We can't see anything?"
"The sonic screwdriver may help"
"I left it in the TARDIS"
"Oh, well we can't exactly stand around here"
"No we can't, Ivy stay here I'm going to have a look around, see if I can find anything"
"Be careful" Ivy said.
"I will don't worry"
Ivy suddenly felt completely alone, even though the Doctor wouldn't leave her for long she still felt vulnerable. She thought her eyes would have adjusted by now but it was still pitch black. The dark had always scared her, ever since she was little, they didn't scare her as much as her dreams but it still unnerved her. She remembered the Doctor tell her about how it wasn't the dark itself but rather what was in the dark. She tried to think of the name but couldn't think of it. She folded her arms and sat down and waited for the Doctor to come back.
The Doctor had been walking for nearly half an hour and he still hadn't come across a wall of any kind. He shouted again and he got another echo. How was this even possible? How can there be an echo if there was nothing for the sound to bounce off? The Doctor almost gave up but when he heard Ivy calling him he was so relieved. He shouted back for her.
"Ivy! Ivy I'm over here"
"Where's here?" She shouted back
"Follow my voice! Are you OK?"
"I'm fine bit worried about you though, had no idea where you were"
"Oh I'm always fine, I can look after myself"
"Oh I know, but being in the dark on your own does make you worried" Ivy's voice sounded like she was right next to him then.
"Are you there? I can't see you"
"I can't see you either" Ivy said. The Doctor felt her hand find his and he felt reassured at her touch, but something wasn't quite right.
"Something very strange is going on" The Doctor said
"You're telling me"
"No, there's an echo and yet there are no walls"
"Oh, I don't know" Ivy's hand left his.
"What do we do?" Ivy asked.
"I have no idea"
Chapter 3
Ivy was getting more and more scared sitting by herself. She had heard whispers and laughter and not in the nice way she wanted it to be. She kept asking who was there but there was never an answer. The Doctor had been gone ages and something in her gut was telling her that he was going to be much longer. Something was also telling her that she had to run, run and get the hell out of wherever she was. But she forced herself to stay put, no matter what she heard.
She stood up and walked around a bit to get rid of the pins and needles that had developed in her feet from sitting for so long. She was about to sit down when she caught a glimpse of something in the distance. It was a street lamp and someone was standing underneath it.
"Hello?" Ivy asked "Are you OK there? Are you hurt?" Ivy slowly walked towards the person. Her gut was screaming at her to run but she pushed on, this person may be lost like her. The person was hunched over slightly, like you would if you had a stomach ache. "Hello? I'm Ivy, what's your name?" It didn't answer. Ivy kept walking towards the figure.
When she reached the figure its face was hidden and it was wearing a plain black cloak. Ivy's heart was racing and she breathing quickly, something wasn't right with this person. Ivy swallowed her fear hard and began to reach for the figure.
"Hello?" Ivy gently touched the figure's cloak and all of a sudden it looked straight at Ivy. Ivy jumped back when she saw its face. It was one her phobias from when she was little, a clown, an ugly, scary clown. It had red hair with a horrific grin painted on. Its teeth were showing and they were razor sharp. Its eyes were the scariest, they had a black outline round it but the eyes themselves had no pupils, they were just white. Its skin was a light brown and looked like it was peeling away. It laughed excruciatingly at Ivy and leaned right into her face. She screamed and ran as fast as she could in the opposite direction.
She looked over her shoulder to see if it was running after her and it was but it had legs like a scorpion and was fast approaching her. She looked back at where she was going and tried not to image its face. She could hear it laughing at her but she tried to tune it out as much as she could but it seemed to invade her mind as well. She was shaking uncontrollably and she felt tears coming down her cheeks. The laughter drifted around her like a mist and Ivy dared to look over her shoulder again which she immediately regretted. The clown was right in her face again she screamed and fell to the floor covering her head with her arms.
The laugh continued in her head but Ivy felt something on her skin. Reluctantly she lifted her head to see what was on her skin. Her breathing stopped and her heart almost did the same. She was covered in spiders, hundreds of them. She tried to shake them off but they just kept coming at her. What was happening to her? Where the hell was she? And where was the Doctor? She covered her head again and kept wishing that the spiders would leave her alone.
"An exit, we need to find an exit of some sort" The Doctor said.
"But you said there were no walls, so there can't be any doors right?" Ivy asked.
"Ah yes, I did, the sonic isn't picking up anything, nothing, not even a jammy dodger which I wish I had one right about now"
"No time to be thinking of food Doctor"
"You're right Ivy, so what would you suggest?" The Doctor asked.
"Me? I don't know"
"Ah see my Ivy wouldn't say that, she would give at least one suggestion. I knew you weren't Ivy from the moment you touched my hand. Ivy wouldn't have done that, she hates showing emotion like that; she doesn't like getting close to anyone. And she would have laughed at that jammy dodger bit; you just got upset, she's not stroppy like that so who are you?" The Doctor asked.
"Very good Doctor" Ivy's voice changed back to The Voice.
"Ah The Voice, nice to see err hear you again" The Doctor said "where is Ivy?"
A light suddenly came on and Ivy was standing all on her own. She wasn't crying or laughing she just had a plain expression on her face.
"Ivy?" The Doctor asked.
He suddenly heard a gunshot go off and Ivy fall to the floor.
"NO!" The Doctor shouted "if that is really Ivy, you have been entered into my bad book and that is not in any shape or form"
"I have no idea what you are talking about Doctor, but I am not telling you where she is" The Voice said.
"You just showed me Ivy being shot"
"I did nothing of the sort, now Doctor, if you really want to find Ivy you are going to have find her yourself. I suggest you do it fast, she isn't doing well in this place" The Voice said.
"What does that mean? What do you mean she isn't doing well?" The Doctor asked but no answer came.
Chapter 4
Ivy felt exhausted. Her breathing was heavy and she just wanted to leave. The spiders had gone and so had the clown but she couldn't help but feel as if that wasn't the last of them. Tears rolled down her cheeks continuously and she kept asking for the Doctor to come back. She was so scared and not knowing if there was something else from her fears coming to get her like the spiders and clown made the whole thing worse.
"Doctor, please come back" She whispered.
"The Doctor won't be coming back" a voice said.
"Excuse me? He always comes back" Ivy said.
"He won't come back, he was never here" It said.
"Who are you? And what do you mean he was never here?" Ivy asked getting angry and upset.
"The Doctor was never here, he was an illusion Ivy and you can call me The Voice" The Voice said.
"The Voice? Bit of a silly name isn't it?"
"Your Doctor said that as well"
Ivy smiled at that remark, the Doctor was still alive somewhere.
"Wipe that smile off your face, you are not doing well here" The Voice said.
"Well duh, with a clown and spiders hanging around isn't exactly a walk in the park for me"
"What other things are you scared of Ivy?"
"I'm not telling you"
"Oh Ivy, I already know"
"Then why ask? And how did you get into my mind? The Doctor struggles and that's saying something"
"You seem more confident since I mentioned the Doctor, he obviously means a lot to you"
"Knowing he's alive is all I need!" Ivy said "So who are you and are you the one who is making all my fears come to life?"
"I may be the one who's doing that, I may not be"
"You like to speak in riddles, I really hate that"
The laughter came back and Ivy froze. If the clown came back she didn't think she could take it again. She just filled her head with the memories of the Doctor and what he would say right now. No matter how hard she tried she couldn't imagine the Doctor's voice, the laughter just got worse and worse. She screamed in frustration. On top of everything else she felt a vision coming on. Her eyes became extremely heavy and she fell to the floor. She tried to fight it but she couldn't, the vision engulfed her.
Chapter 5
Bright light, a massive bright light shone in Ivy's eyes, almost blinding her. Complete contrast to the pitch black place she was originally. She knew she was dreaming but she felt calm for once. She smiled and sighed at the peace inside her. Was this going to be a bad vision or one of the rare nice ones? Ivy hoped it was a good dream and it was her body giving her a rest from the fear she had back in the darkness with the voice.
It was empty, wherever Ivy was, just like the dark it was empty but it was much more peaceful and less scary. No clowns, or spiders, just a wasteland. Ivy could get used to this; she sat and took in everything around her.
"I'm not finished talking to you!" The Doctor shouted for about the millionth time. He wanted to know what The Voice meant about Ivy not doing well. He needed to talk to Ivy but had no idea how. Just a few minutes to see what she had experienced on her end. Then maybe, just maybe, he can get back to the TARDIS and get them out of wherever they were.
He couldn't physically see Ivy but if he could reach her through her mind then he could talk to her. Only problem was he had the Psychic Paper, the only way he could think of to communicate with her. Ivy's mind was hard to get into; the last time was very difficult to put her to sleep. She had put up a brick wall so people couldn't access her thoughts, which was good but bad in other ways. The only other way he could think of reaching her was through her dreams, but he had no idea if she was having one or not. He had to try and hope that she was having a vision. He sat down and began to focus his thoughts. He imagined Ivy's voice in his head, her laugh, her smile, the way she walked, everything about her. He thought about the experience he had in her mind last time, the pain he felt, the loss and loneliness that she felt all the time. He soon found where she was and she was having some sort of a vision.
"IVY!" The Doctor nearly shouted. Ivy looked at the Doctor.
"Is that you Doctor? How did you get into my dream?" Ivy asked completely startled.
"It's a bit complicated and this takes a lot of concentration, so I don't have long" The Doctor explained.
"Ok, so what do you want to know?" Ivy asked.
"What things has The Voice done to you?" The Doctor asked seriously.
"It was horrible, there was a clown and spiders" Ivy shivered "they are my worst fears"
"So The Voice likes to play on our fears, sort of makes sense. Nothing scary around here, your dreams must be protecting you for some reason, I'll think about that, it may be the explanation I'm looking for" The Doctor said.
"I do feel extremely calm and relaxed"
"Your mind is powerful, it can protect itself if need be. You must have gone through a lot of terror. Only thing I want to know is how does The Voice know your phobias?"
"Doctor I think I'm waking up"
"Ok, I better get going, I'll find you Ivy, I promise"
"I don't want to wake up though, I don't want to see anymore spiders of clowns, I don't think I can take it"
The Doctor looked at her. Dark circles were beginning to appear under her eyes and the sparkles in her eyes were starting to fade. She looked exhausted.
"You are waking up, I'm sorry Ivy but you can't stay here otherwise I can't find you. Everyone has to face their fears one day, stay strong and be the brave Ivy I know. I have a plan now, didn't take long but I know what to do, just trust me like you did in your college that time" The Doctor said.
The Doctor faded away and slowly Ivy woke up to be greeted by the darkness once more.
Ivy sat up and sighed. The Doctor was alive, he was safe. Even with that thought in her head she felt like crying. She had never felt so weak in all her life.
"Ivy, you are not weak" she heard The Doctor say.
"Doctor?" Ivy asked.
"I'm here, I finally found you. Come on, let's get back to the TARDIS" He said Ivy stood up and went over to the sound of his voice. She then saw him. She had never been so happy to see that stupid bow tie of his. She hugged him and he hugged her back.
"Dont ever do that to me again" The Doctor said.
"I won't" Ivy said. He smiled and started to walk away. Ivy followed but heard a massive gun shot. The Doctor turned to Ivy with blood on his hands. He fell to the floor and a yellow light started to come out of his hands and face.
"Doctor? What the hell?" Ivy asked terrified.
Another shot came, and another and another until The Doctor stopped moving. Ivy screamed in anger and despair.
"He is dead Ivy, give up" The Voice said. Ivy felt tears rolling down her cheeks as she knelt at The Doctor's body. He couldn't be dead, he just couldn't be.
"He's not dead" Ivy said.
"Check his jacket; he has his sonic screwdriver, psychic paper, everything that you would usually find in his jacket"
Ivy searched through his jacket and found everything The Voice had said. Sonic, paper, even a normal pad of paper. Ivy still couldn't believe it, the Doctor just couldn't be dead, he was alive, somewhere, he had to be.
"Give up Ivy Godber" The Voice said. Ivy stood up, her cheeks still drenched from her tears.
"I'm not giving up, the Doctor never did, so I'm not" Ivy said.
"Then you will be punished" The Voice said "Just like everyone else"
"What do you mean everyone else? Who else has been here?" Ivy asked.
"Many people, and so many phobias, my favourite has to be Suzann, she had a huge phobia of flying" Ivy was overwhelmed in a vision of a woman flying over the sea. "This is what I showed her and she just couldn't take it"
"She died?" Ivy asked while watching the woman scream and shout in fear.
"Suicide, she killed herself. That's the only escape from here" The Voice explained.
"So what did she do to deserve this?" Ivy asked.
"She kept fighting and disobeying me" The Voice said "I save your biggest fear for last, it always gets me what I want"
"And what's that?" Ivy asked.
"You talk too much Ivy, like I promised, you need punishment" The Voice said. Ivy fell from the vision back into darkness.
She stood up and clenched her jaw tight. She prepared herself for her 'punishment', she didn't care if the Doctor was dead or not, she was going to make him proud. Nothing came. She waited and waited but none of her fears came. She started to relax and was about to sit down when a huge swarm of bees came buzzing towards her. She screamed and fell to the floor as the bees swarmed around her, buzzing right in her ears not leaving her alone for a second.
"Stop please!" Ivy said.
"HA HA!" The Voice laughed in triumph.
The buzzing faded away and Ivy was on her own again.
Ivy was just so tired, she was so close to just giving up completely.
Chapter 6
Ivy had been lying on the floor for what felt like 5 hours but she couldn't keep track of time anymore. The bees kept coming back when she least expected so she was constantly on edge. She had never been so scared in her entire life, even with her dreams she had never faced a clown, spiders and bees all one after the other in just a few hours. She tucked her knees up to her chin and began to weep again.
"Give up yet Ivy?" The Voice asked.
"No" Ivy mumbled.
"Ivy, you are alone, without the Doctor and you have all your fears coming after you, no-one can keep this up for much longer" The Voice said sternly.
"The Doctor will come" Ivy said.
"The Doctor is dead, I keep telling you"
"Just because you keep saying doesn't mean it's true. Being a media student helps a lot" Ivy said.
"If he's alive then how did you see him die?"
"Illusion simple really"
"You touched him"
"So? Your illusions are powerful"
"They are"
"You know my fears, which means you are inside my mind"
"In some way yes"
"Being inside someone's mind means it's a two way thing. I know you didn't kill the Doctor, I can sense it now I've managed to wiggle my way in" Ivy said beginning to stand up "you take people away from their homes and families to play games with them, a bit like the film 'Saw' but more about phobias than physical torture. Once they kill themselves you eat the energy of the life, you can't kill them because that is you're doing, not at their hand, which means no life force for you!"
"How did you get inside my mind? You are just a simple human!" The Voice shouted.
"Am I? While Ivy was slowly waking up I directed you to my mind, if you can use illusions, so can I"
"Doctor!" The Voice said.
Ivy changed to the Doctor's form.
"Time Lords mind, very powerful and not to be messed with I'm afraid. Seeing Ivy so scared made me do this. Now I'm inside your mind you have to stop, but I'll give you a choice, you can stay here but you have to promise not to take anymore lives, or I'll stop you here and now" The Doctor said.
"I need life force to live Doctor"
"You think that because that's all you know, please let me show you what you can feed on"
"Never Doctor, you think you are so powerful and yet you aren't" The Voice said. The Doctor felt a searing pain shoot through his head and he fell to the floor.
"Please...you don't have to do this" The Doctor stuttered.
"HA HA!" The Voice laughed.
"Oh, chuckles, I think you're forgetting about the simple human here!" Ivy said. "I may not have the strongest of minds to compete with you but I have enough control to set these guys on you" Ivy said with the bees and spiders behind her. She looked at the Doctor "You're right Doctor, everyone has to face their fears one day" She smiled "Go on my pretties; let's give The Voice a taste of his own medicine!" The spiders ran up in the darkness with the bees not far behind. The Doctor stopped wincing in pain and Ivy knelt next to him.
"No, stop! Leave me alone, I order you!" The Voice said. Ivy helped the Doctor stand up. "You will pay Ivy Godber, you may be able to tell the future but you can't face your worst fear!" Ivy saw something she never wanted to see ever again since she was 3 years old. A slimy green mask came floating down to her level. Ivy stopped breathing, it was the mask that her evil aunt and uncle had bought her for a laugh. It was a prank mask that wouldn't come off if you put it on, just like in Goosebumps: The Haunted Mask.
The mask attached itself to Ivy's face and she screamed trying to get it off. It was suffocating her, she couldn't breathe.
"I always win Doctor" The Voice said.
"I'm giving you one last chance" The Doctor said.
"For me to take your offer? Never" The Voice laughed.
"I did warn you" The Doctor got out his sonic screwdriver and put it against his ear.
"What are you doing?" The Voice asked.
"Like I said, a two way thing mind control" He pressed the sonics' button and high pitch sound rippled through the Doctor's mind and right into The Voice's mind. The Voice screamed and screamed until he eventually died away. The Doctor switched the sonic off and rubbed his ear. He looked at Ivy who was still on the floor holding her face in her hands.
"Ivy, it's ok, he's gone" The Doctor said.
Ivy took her face out of her hands and looked at him.
"See? The mask has gone, don't know why you are scared of them but still, it's gone" The Doctor said helping her up.
Chapter 7
The Doctor and Ivy walked back to the TARDIS which was with them the entire time.
"So you're saying The Voice just made us walk around in circles so we didn't bump into the TARDIS?" Ivy asked.
"Basically yes, I'm afraid so. Temporal Spatial Loop, not like the one that was in your college it's slightly different, purely mind control on The Voice's part" The Doctor explained while walking into the TARDIS.
"So did you see any of your fears?" Ivy asked.
"Only one" The Doctor looked at Ivy "But I didn't let it get to me too much"
"What was it?"
"So, where to next?" The Doctor asked changing the subject quickly.
"Don't mind" Ivy said.
"Oh just wait here a minute, I just need to fetch something from my study, I'll be right back" The Doctor said running up the stairs.
Ivy didn't argue, she walked around the console to the scanner where she saw some Spanish writing. She could understand it since she could speak the language fluently, The Doctor didn't know about it but she didn't think it was relevant to anything. The writing said 'one possible outcome you have seen, two more to be revealed'.
"What?" Ivy asked.
"What what?" The Doctor asked as he came back down the stairs.
"Nothing, find what you wanted?" Ivy asked.
"Yes, now let's see where we are going next" the Doctor said pulling a lever which sent the TARDIS hurtling to one side.
"We are never going to have a smooth journey are we?"
"It's more exciting when it's a bumpy ride!" The Doctor smiled.
"I know the word to use right now" Ivy said.
"What's that?"
Ivy grinned, "Geronimo!" She shouted.
