He rolled over to his side and curled up. He so didn't want to get out of bed; it was too cold and too early to get out. He waited a few more minutes hoping to see if he would fall back to a sweet slumber but could not, so with a groan he opened his eyes and jumped back at seeing Balthazar stare at him with his legs crossed aswell as his arms on a chair beside his bed.
"What the hell are you doing here?" He scrambled back while trying to calm his racing heart.
"Language," Balthazar said calmly still not moving from his position. "Just watching you sleep that's all..."
Dave stared at his mentor for a moment trying to process the words.
"That just sounds plain weird," Dave shook his head, "Seriously you just don't say that to a guy. It's creepy."
"I'll think about it." Balthazar replied while standing up, Dave sent a glare at the retreating form before standing up and stretched out. He froze before scrambling back onto the bed and grabbed his phone to check the time. 08:30. Crap! He only had fifteen minutes left!
He hurriedly ran towards his wardrobe and chucked a pair of dark blue jeans and a red hoodie on. He ran towards his bathroom and brushed his teeth while trying to tame his 'wild hair' as Balthazar dubbed it. It wasn't his fault his hair was unruly! He grabbed some water and spat out the paste before rushing back towards his bedroom and grabbed his bag shoving all his books inside before running out of his room and down the stairs.
He skidded into the kitchen and grabbed a piece of toast, he was about to turn and leave but he suddenly felt weight on his shoulder making him jump. He turned around with a surprised look and stared up at Balthazar.
"I'm going to be late-" Dave hurried trying to pull away from the man but his grip tightened.
"You are not going." He stopped struggling and stared up at the older man confused and a hint of anger.
"What do you mean I'm not going?" Dave asked confused before pulling away sharply this time making Balthazar let go. "I have classes! I have to maintain my attendance, if I don't go I will never catch up-"
"Dave, we already have phoned the university and said that you will not be able to go." He turned to Mikayla who was leaning against the sink with her arms crossed and her eyes showing small pity, however he wasn't taking it.
"But I'm fine."
"You are not fine." Balthazar stated sternly with his arms crossed and giving him a glare. "You have not been sleeping well and have not informed us. I expected more from you Dave. Your health is my main priority."
"I'm not a child!" Dave threw his arms in the air ignoring the disappointed tone of Balthazar. "I don't need to 'inform' someone if I don't feel well! I've been taking care of myself for a long time-"
"Dave we are just concerned." Mikayla interrupted making Dave glare at her but she rolled her eyes.
"For once let Balthazar and I take care of you."
He watched as she pushed herself off of the sink and started to lead him back up the stairs. He tried to make her see that his assignments were due today and he needed to hand them in but she refused.
"I have a date with Becky later!" He tried as they were drawing closer to his room; he knew she would hesitate making him grin to himself. If he could just-
"You just have to cancel it." Dave jumped and looked up and saw Balthazar staring at him calmly, he pouted. He could never get away with anything with Mikayla sometimes due to Balthazar's timing.
"But I've already booked the place and it took me two days!" Dave argued pleadingly and turned to Mikayla as they entered his room. She saw him bit her lip debating on whether letting him go. He bent his head down and sighed.
"I guess I can cancel it, she's very understanding..." He grinned to himself and hoped that Mikayla would agree.
"Balthazar maybe we should-"
Yes!
"No, I will not have him running around in such a state."
No! Dave groaned inwardly, he finally looked up and stared at Mikayla who was still biting her lip.
"Mikayla..." She turned to look at him and he sent her a sad lost look.
"I'm sorry Dave but your health is more important."
He stared at her for a moment. She had not really fought back. She tried, yes but didn't put too much effort. He groaned before dropping down onto his bed muttering to himself.
"Let's make a deal." He turned his head to Mikayla who was smiling slightly, he stared at her suddenly interested.
"Mikayla..." Balthazar growled at her but she shrugged him off.
"If you promise to stay in bed and follow our instructions then I'll consider letting you go tonight."
"I promise-"
"Hold on," He stared at her confused, "I haven't finished what I was going to say."
He wanted to curse but refrained from doing so. Balthazar had never liked it when he did, it always lead to long lectures and more homework from the older man.
"When I mean stay in bed I mean not doing anything but sleep, meaning: No studying."
"Can I at least read?" He pouted, he swore she saw her lips quiver slightly to a smile but it was gone.
"Yes as long as it's not a school textbook then go ahead. We have a deal?"
"Of course!" He grinned before scooting further up his bed and gave an angelic look making Balthazar roll his eyes at him. He watched as Balthazar approached the end of his bed and pointed his finger st Dave who continued to stare innocently.
"Get out of this bed and you can forget about going. Understood?"
He swallowed nervously; Balthazar sometimes can be quite scary when he wanted to be. He nodded his head and closed his eyes.
"I'm sleeping." He said playfully and cracked one of his eyes open just in time to see Mikayla refraining to chuckle. He grinned but dropped it instantly as Balthazar glared at him before marching out, Mikayla gave a small wave before closing the door behind her aswell.
Once they were gone he folded his arms behind his head and stared up at the ceiling. Something was up he had no doubt about that. He turned to his side and stared at the blank wall. He also had never seen Balthazar this protective of him. It was always 'Don't do something rash,' or 'If you catch a cold it's not my fault.' but never like this.
He groaned and closed his eyes. He would just have to try and stay in his good side if he was planning to take Becky out later, with those thoughts he started to go off to a slumber.
Mikayla's POV
She followed Balthazar to the living room and sat down on one of the sofas. She watched as he sat down across from her with his hands folded on his knees looking slightly far away. She turned her head towards the window.
Seeing Dave like that last night had caused them to worry for the young man more than usual. She shivered slightly at the thought of what that thing might be. It had reminded her of a reaper but doubted that it was. Perhaps they can enter his mind and see what was up. She had read something about that but it seemed a little dark to her. She gave a glance at Balthazar who was frowning slightly in concentration; she waited for a couple of moments and opened her mouth.
"Unfortunately we can't enter his mind," He spoke out looking up at her, "Entering his mind might make him more vulnerable and might open new doors for things like the Venator Noctis."
She gave him a confused look making him chuckle a little and leaned back on his chair.
"It means Hunter," He paused for a moment, "They are, or was controlled by Morgana. They consume fears and magic by entering ones dream. However, what confuses me is why they are suddenly reappearing or rather why this one still roaming."
"What do you mean why is this one alive?" Mikayla asked confused, "They are dead right?"
"You cannot kill them only locking them away or rather sending the hunters back where they belong. The Underworld."
"As in Hades?" Mikayla's eyes widen in interest and in fright. At the age of thirteen she had been interested in the Greek Gods and Goddesses but she had not believed in them, however, if what Balthazar was saying true-
"Yes," His eyes showed slight amusement probably by reading her mind, "Anyway, like I said we cannot enter Dave's mind, the only way to stop this creature is by-"
"Finding Morgana's own Encantus which the location is unknown."
She jumped and turned around and saw Veronica and Becky standing at the doorway. She took a deep breath and glared at the two but only Becky was slightly affected, Veronica was not looking at her but Balthazar.
"We need to find the book as quickly as possible if we are to keep the Prime Merlinean safe." Her voice was firm but it held calmness at the same time, she shuffled awkwardly before giving a small hesitate smile towards the two ladies.
"Why don't you stay for a while," Mikayla suggested but inside she really didn't want them to, "I can get you something to eat or would you like something to drink instead?"
"Thanks for the offer Mikayla," Becky smiled at her, "Maybe a glass of water."
She nodded her head and turned to the other girl.
"Veronica?"
"A cup of coffee if you don't mind Mikayla." She nodded her head with a smile before heading off to the kitchen.
As she entered she pulled out a mug and a cup and started to heat the water up. While preparing the coffee she started to get lost in her thoughts.
Making him more vulnerable and open new doors huh? She thought to herself. Pretty scaring thinking about it but there has to be a way to protect him, maybe-
She stopped her thoughts for a moment. Dave's Encantus could help right? It practically had everything you needed to learn about sorcery and this... Whatever it is they are dealing with is sorcery right? So perhaps it will be there.
She poured the hot water into the mug and started to stir it before putting the spoon in the sink and made her way back to the living room. As she entered she had noticed that Veronica and Becky had taken her seat, they turned to her and smiled making her smile back and handed them their cups.
"Locating Morgana's book is quite a long shot," Balthazar announced as she sat down beside him. "Firstly we do not know where it is and secondly we need to find out if there are any secret traps that protect the book."
"Why can't we use Dave's Encantus?" Mikayla suggested, "It's bound to have some information right?"
"Might be so but you won't be able to read it," Veronica said plainly making Mikayla raise an eyebrow at her in confusion. "The only ones that can read the book is Dave and Balthazar. David because he is the Prime Merlinean and Balthazar due to the fact he is the mentor."
Makes sense, Mikayla nodded to herself at the fact.
"Then you can find some information then right Balthazar?" Becky asked with a glimmer of hope.
"Perhaps, I will check later," Balthazar nodded his head before turning to Veronica, "How did you know that a Venator Noctis was here?"
Mikayla turned to Veronica and narrowed her eyes slightly. It was true. They had only found out about this last night and her coming here was a bit suspicious since Balthazar had placed wards around the area. Veronica however smiled at her making Mikayla feel a little nervous.
"Do you remember when we had conversed in town the other day Mikayla?" Veronica asked her, she nodded her head. "Well before I had left I had felt pairs of eyes staring at us from the south of our position. At first I tossed the thought aside but then I felt a very dark aura coming from that direction, so I investigated and found this on the floor."
Veronica pulled out a black tattered cloth making Mikayla frown slightly. What was special about it?
"When Veronica told me this I thought that someone probably dropped it or something," Becky stated, "But there is something weird about this cloth. Touch it Mikayla."
Mikayla looked up startled for a moment before looking back down at the cloth. With hesitation she took the cloth out of Veronica's hand. She was startled by how cold it was but was even more shocked as the coldness made its way up her arm, confused she passed the cloth towards Balthazar who examined it.
"Now, this is a piece of the Venator Noctis cloak that I had found." Veronica explained, "Now, the reason why I know that this is not an ordinary cloth is that when Rebecca touched it she explained that it felt cold and the coldness was somehow entering her."
"And?" Mikayla asked.
"Well, non-sorcerers should not feel any magic around them only see if we wish upon doing so, and the only creature that I know of that can do this is the Venator Noctis. They may not have the same effect on sorcerers but the non-sorcerers can feel the coldness."
"Wait," Becky turned to Veronica confused, "What do you mean that they may not have the same effect on sorcerers?"
"Last night one of those things came into Dave's room and it looked as if it was going to kill him," Mikayla explained, "But I felt the coldness why is that?"
"It's probably due to the fact that you are not completely a sorcerer but not completely a normal person either, but that's just my theory." Veronica explained with a slight apologetic smile, Mikayla smiled back in understanding but felt that there was a jab in there somewhere.
"Is he alright?" Becky asked ignoring the previous comment.
"He's asleep and should remain so far a while," Balthazar spoke out for the first time in a while. Becky nodded her head but that did not stop the feeling of worry.
"So what happens now?" Becky asked them.
"All we can do right now is research and be on our guard." Balthazar stated sternly.
"So what do we tell Dave?" Mikayla asked this time looking towards the door.
"We don't." Mikayla and Becky's eyes snapped towards Balthazar and Veronica in disbelief.
