Prologue – Beneath The Skin

Blood everywhere not from a long battle between the Nightbreed and the Naturals but between blood. She lays upon the table. Lying helplessly a blank stare up towards the heavens, and no breath passes her lips her soul is gone and his heart along with it. But the child...the child lives, the first born in the new Midian built for the monsters. But this was no monster, besides obvious non important features the child was perfect in every way, "a beautiful prisoner among the monsters" Peloquin would say. Looking down upon the child, clawed digitgrade feet, animalistic ears, and a tail was all that marred her visage, an otherwise perfect being. He handed the child over to Rachel and left, not even a glance back. The bluest eyes greeted her and a gurgling smile, she knew he would not return, that she was in the safest of hands. She took responsibility for the child. She would repay the favor that was long ago bestowed on her own. She wrapped the child up and left the others to bury the woman, this child would be different, she would know her heritage and her place in the future of Midian. Walking through the winding walkways she passed the Great Mural painted when they arrived to remind the new ones the history of how they came to be. She looked upon the figures of the pair standing against the night sky. No one expected this to happen it wasn't evident in the mystic cryptic strokes of paint that marred the walls and halls but the birth of this little one was stretched as far as the eye could see. A life for a life, in dying she gave her child a past, present, and future. The Nightbreed were now her only family and they would take care of her as one of their own.
