All the whos in the McDodd family were sitting around the table for dinner one night when the mayor, father of 97 children, raised his voice to get attention of the group.
"Attention – attention! Excuse me? Would everyone – "
He was cut short when his wife, Sally, realized that his attempts at getting control of the enormous family were failing miserably and decided to take control.
"HEY!" Sally yelled at the table of children, all of whom stopped their talking immediately and looked attentively up at their mother, all except for one, Jojo, who hadn't because he had not been talking in the first place and rarely ever did.
"Thanks, honey," the mayor nodded toward his wife and smiled. She always knew just what to do. He continued in a more serious tone, directing his speaking toward his children, "Thank you. As you all know, your brother Jojo is next in line for the position of Mayor of WhoVille and… well… he's not so… um, thrilled about the whole thing," The mayor eyed his son sympathetically, who simply looked back at him with an emotionless expression. The mayor continued, "Anyway, I really wanted someone in the family to take over because that is tradition, but I've decided that I don't want to force anything on Jojo that he doesn't want. So, here comes the news that your mother and I wanted to tell you," All 97 pairs of eyes around the table grew wider, all except for Jojo, who wasn't in the least bit interested in whatever his dad had to say. The mayor glanced at Sally, who nodded and smiled reassuringly at him as he continued, "Tonight we are awaiting a special guest that I have invited into our family. He is the same age as Jojo, 15, and your mother and I have decided to adopt him into the family. "
There was instantly a buzz of conversation that worked its way down and around the table until everyone was talking again.
"Hey! Wait! Your father isn't finished yet! There's still more we need to tell you!" Sally yelled at her children once again, and, once again, they became silent. Ned continued.
"We wanted to adopt him because… well, one reason I guess is that we kind of need someone to be mayor when the time comes. And another reason is that Jojo can have another guy friend to hang around with instead of a bunch of girls all the time!" Everyone laughed and agreed with him, except for Jojo of course, before he continued, "He isn't as… um… well rounded as the rest of us… but I think that he'll shape up once he warms up to us. Sound good?"
The excitement was almost electric as cheers erupted from the McDodd's 96 daughters. All except for Jojo, who sat in shock. Another guy in the family? To take over Jojo's spot as future mayor? Jojo was alright with the second part; he just wasn't sure what to think of the whole idea in general . . .
Just then, the doorbell rang.
"Oh, there he is now!" Sally hopped up from her place at the table and went to get the door, patting her son's shoulder on the way and stopping suddenly when she noticed his frozen look, "Don't worry, Jojo. You'll just have to warm up to the idea."
Sally gave her son one last understanding look and walked off to open the door.
"Everyone, this is Ben," Ned introduced the who as he walked in and motioned for him to sit, "You can have a seat right next to our son that I was telling you about. Alright then! I'm just going to introduce you to everyone so we can all get off on the right foot and get to know each other! That's Jojo right next to you. I'm sure you two will get along just fine! And this is Haley and Hooley and . . ."
Jojo lost sight of his father's voice as he rambled off all 96 of his daughter's names. Like Ben was really going to remember all of their names. Right. Jojo stole a quick glance at the who next to him. He hardly looked like he cared about his new sibling's names. He barely looked like he was capable of caring about much of anything. He had to be more than a foot or so over Jojo, who was only 4 foot 8 inches tall, covered in stripes of black and gray fur and very small and skinny for his age. Ben on the other hand was covered in all jet-black fur, and was tall, large, built and looked like he could eat any of the McDodds for breakfast.
Ben caught Jojo looking at him and smirked. Jojo quickly turned his head away.
"Hey. So you're Jojo. What does that stand for? Joe Jone?" Jojo wasn't sure how Ben found his own comment funny in any sense at all, Jojo sure didn't, while Ben, however, laughed in a menacing way that was not what anyone would call friendly chuckle. When he was finished laughing, he waited for a response. When none came, he began talking again, "Don't talk, eh? Ah well, I'll make you talk if you don't sooner or later."
Jojo was shocked at how threatening he could be when he had only known him for five minutes. Ben settled back into his seat and pretended to look attentive for the rest of dinner.
At the end of dinner, Ben got up from his chair, which squeaked dramatically from his weight as he did so, and addressed Jojo once more before following Sally, who was excited to show him to his room.
"See you tomorrow at school." He couldn't have said it more tauntingly.
Jojo could already tell that having Ben around was going to be far from anything good.
I hope everyone liked it…Tell me what you think! I don't really want to keep posting the chapters if no one wants to read them. So, if you liked it… or if you didn't… Review and tell me!
