superstition
It was weird how he never noticed it before but now they were dating, he began to notice all the little things she thought was superstitious.
She hated walking under a ladder, not for the fear of something falling on her but the belief it brought bad luck. She never crossed anyone on the stairs either, didn't walk on the cracks in the pavement and she believed breaking a mirror really did bring seven years bad luck.
When she spoke about something, she'd touch something wooden so she wouldn't jink it.
"Do you really believe walking under ladders brings bad luck?" He said as they stood outside a coffee shop. There was a ladder positioned near the front door and Baz stared up at it and nodded her head.
"Yes." She replied, "Everyone knows it is. Those who've walked under ladders have recieved some sort of bad luck."
"And you don't believe it could be a coincidence?"
"Charlie! How can someone walk under a ladder and then, a couple of hours, days, weeks later; they get told they're dying of cancer or recieve a broken leg. It's not coincidence, it's bad luck for walking under a ladder."
She didn't walk underneath it but Charlie did. He really didn't believe in all that superstitious stuff. They went into the cafe and ordered coffee. They left an hour later and as they stood at the edge of the road, Baz asked;
"Your place or mine?"
The road was clear and as they stepped out, a car came hurtling towards Charlie and slammed its brakes on. As it hit a parked car a few feet away from Charlie, Baz smirked;
"I told you walking under ladders is bad luck!"
But surely it was a coincidence? Could walking under ladders really be superstitious?
Either way, Charlie was never going to walk under ladders ever again.
