Title: Kaikamahine and Makua: Father and Daughter- Season 2
Author: Hannah
Rating: T for language
Disclaimer: I do not own the Five-0 universe. Just Layla and all the things that come with her. Sometimes contains a few lines of dialogue from the show, but that's not mine either.
SPOILER ALERT - If you haven't seen the show yet and don't want to know what happens, don't read my story – SPOILER ALERT
1. Turning Tables- Glee version
"How's the family? How's Rachel? Is she getting the morning sickness yet?" Danny's heart breaks a little at Steve's words and he can't quite meet the other man's eyes. He quickly changes the subject and then let's Lt. Commander White take over speaking to Steve, stepping away so his partner can't see he's having trouble containing his emotions.
They've been feeding Steve lies for almost a month now, telling him Layla's in California with Mary. That she's fine and she's mostly happy and she misses him. Danny doesn't actually doubt that Layla is all those things, she's just not with her aunt. It had been a group decision because Steve has enough on his plate with Wo Fat and being framed and being in prison and the last thing he needs right now is the knowledge that his daughter is missing.
Danny grinds the heels of his hands into his eyes, using the pressure to suppress the moisture that he can feel welling there. He's no use to anyone if he breaks down right now, but he wants too. God does he want too. Between Layla and Rachel and Grace and everything else… he just wants it to stop.
2. The Forgotten People (Bon Temps remix)- Thievery Corporation
Steve doesn't know what hurts more: the shank in his gut or the last five words that Victor Hesse whispers in his ear.
"He's got your daughter, McGarrett." And then Hesse is being dragged off him, the movement jarring the wound in his stomach. Steve gasps for air, staring up at the blue sky. There's a flurry of activity around him and a guard, one of the younger ones who at least treats him like a human being rather than a prisoner, hits his knees next to Steve.
"Jesus, McGarrett," the guard says, one already gloved hand going to Steve's abdomen and applying pressure. "You're a trouble magnet, aren't you?" But Steve isn't focused on the man's words.
He has your daughter, the words bounce around in Steve's head, freezing his muscles, making his throat constrict and his heart pound. The blood rushing through his veins roars in his ears to the point that he is unaware of the activity around him, the medics who are applying compresses and putting an oxygen mask over his head. It's all blocked out by the ringing in his ears.
"Layla," he breathes just before his eyes roll back in his head and it all goes dark.
3. Brothers in Arms- Celtic Thunder
It's a good thing Danny's expecting what comes next. It's what allows him to go mostly limp as his partner slams him against the garage wall, fisting the front of his shirt in his hands and leaning his head down, anger contorting his face.
"She's safe with Mary? That's what you told me, isn't it?" Steve snarls, his breath hot against Danny's face. "That my daughter is with my little sister? Where is she? Where's Layla?" Steve shouts, emphasizing his last sentence with a shake that makes Danny's head rock on his shoulders. He stays passive, doing nothing more than raising his hands to put them on his partner's clenched fists.
"We think Nani has her." He says slowly and gently, watching confusion flit across Steve's face, momentarily obscuring the anger. "We've been looking for them." Steve abruptly pulls away, stalking across the tiny space of Max's garage, scrubbing his hands across his face as he paces.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Steve rounds on Danny, pointing an accusatory finger at him. "You're my best friend and you hid the fact that my daughter's been kidnapped!" Steve isn't even attempting to keep his voice low which is why Danny feels justified in raising his.
"And what would you have done, Steve? Broken out of jail to track her down? How's that working out for you so far?" Danny shouts back. "You've got a hole in your gut, the police force of an entire state hunting you down like an animal, and you're no closer to finding Wo Fat now than you were five hours ago! So tell me what you would have done, big guy! Huh! Fuck!" Danny turns around and stabs hands that shake with fear and anger through his hair.
"Jenna is looking for her almost twenty-four seven. I've got some old friends who used to work with me in Jersey tracking down a few leads through their contacts. Kamekona's got feelers out in the underground. We're looking for her, okay?" he says quietly, staring at the white plaster wall of the garage. There's no acknowledgement so he turns and almost runs into his partner who has crossed the small space to stand behind him, arms folded over his chest, the anger relocated in favor of a sad puppy dog expression.
"You're right." Steve says and Danny feels his eyebrows rise at the confession. "I hate that you're right, but you were right to do what you did. I would have been out of my head and no good to anyone. You're a father… you know what I'm talking about." The words feel like a physical blow to Danny, but he doesn't react outwardly. They can talk about his problems later. Right now, he needs to be a professional. God, he misses his tie.
4. Chasing Pavements- Adele
"Where's Layla?" Kono blurts out before she can stop herself. To her surprise, Wo Fat stops and turns back to her, a half-smile playing round his mouth.
"I'm sorry?" he asks, clearly amused.
"Layla McGarrett; where is she?" Kono snaps with more bravado than she really feels. Wo Fat folds his arms across his chest and tilts his head to the side.
"I'm afraid I don't know what you're talking about." He says and Kono really wants her hands to be free so that she can wipe that look off his face.
"Bullshit." Kono spits out, too pissed to have any care about her personal safety right now. "You know where she is. You helped her mother kidnap her."
"What Nani Lakuala does with her family affairs is no business of mine." Wo Fat says, his face settling into an expression somewhere between boastful and smug. "But if I did have a vested interest in this girl, I would be able to tell you that Layla is very much alive and well and better off with her mother than she will ever be with her father." With that, he gives her a faint nod of his head and steps into the interior of the ship.
5. Rumour Has It- Adele
Danny leans against a table in the main room of the Five-0 suite, watching Kamekona tease Kono about something, wishing he could be smiling as easily as everyone else. Even Steve, with the looming reality that his daughter is missing, can laugh which Danny supposes is a millions times better than murderous rage. Jenna's hour long presentation earlier of all the ways that they're searching for Layla seems to have taken some of the edge off the news, especially since Joe and Steve have both been on the phone recently with contacts of their own, ensuring that even more people are looking.
In fact, Danny's so wrapped up in his morose thoughts that he fails to notice his phone vibrate on the desk in front of him. It's only when it vibrates a second time, traveling across the desk until it's rattling against his water bottle hat he notices it. Picking it up, he glances at the display and his heart stops. He thumbs the answer button with a shaking thumb.
"You have no idea how many beers you owe me, bro." Alex Romanov's thick New York accent is one of the most welcome things that Danny has heard in a long time even though it's being backed up by a cacophony of cat-calls and '80s rock music that leads Danny to think the man's calling him from a strip club. "I found your girl."
"Where?" Danny asks, pushing back from the desk and half-running, half-walking out his office into the main room. Everyone goes silent at his entrance and Steve leaps out of his chair as Danny mouths the word 'Layla'. He slaps the speaker button and puts the phone on the table.
"Peter Farellini recently stepped up to fill the considerably large shoes of Giovanni Farellini, his father, who seems to be taking an extended vacation somewhere not so nice. Rumor is that Farellini Jr. is consolidating his power with help from a third party, a third party that's run by a pretty bambina from Hawaii. Farellini's putting them up in a loft apartment in Soho." Alex says. Danny meets Steve's eyes across the table, knowing his partner's calm façade is hiding a myriad of emotions.
"Can you confirm the presence of the girl?" Joe steps into the conversation. To his credit, Alex doesn't seem phased by the new voice firing questions at him.
"Tall, beautiful, dark hair, dances like a friggin' angel?" the man asks, a hint of amusement in his voice. "Oh, yeah; Williams sent out enough pictures of this girl that I could make a scrapbook about her. This is definitely your girl." Relieved sighs and a cheer from Kono break out around the room. Danny steps forward and picks up the phone, flipping it back over from speaker and putting it to his ear.
"My friend, I owe you a helluva lot more than beer." He says, stepping away from the celebration behind him. "You have no idea how good this news is."
"You can owe me one." Alex says as a new song booms in the background. "Hey, gotta go. Scarlett's on." The phone clicks in his ear and Danny smiles as he pockets the device, turning around only to almost run into Steve.
"Damnit!" he yelps, one hand going to his heart. "Stop doing that, McGarrett."
"Sorry, Danno," Steve says with a smile that seems a little awkward. "Force of habit," Danny puts a hand on his partner's shoulder.
"We're gonna get her, Steven. Just as soon as I go home and pack a toothbrush, we're on the next flight to New York." Steve doesn't say anything, but he doesn't have to because Danny can see the emotion in his eyes.
A/N: Woo-hoo! It is GREAT to be back! Thank you, CBS for an amazing season opener. The story of what has been happening to Layla over the last month, including the rescue will be posted tomorrow. It would have been today, but one kid has soccer and the other has debate and there is no time for creative genius when you're fighting rush-hour traffic.
