{Behind These Brown Eyes}

-Pilot-Part-1-

Marissa's P.O.V.

"Marni! Wake up!" My older sister Elena pounded on my bedroom door with her fists.

I groaned as I fluttered my droopy chocolate-brown eyes open. Elena was still hollering through the door because I had it locked for a specific reason.

But allow me to introduce myself, my name is Marissa Gilbert, but everyone calls me Marni. Elena is my protective older-sister who is always bossy to my twin-brother Jeremy and me but we never really listen to her anyway. I have a mind of my own and frankly, I don't give a damn about what anyone else thinks, at least not until after my parents died in a car accident and thankfully Elena survived it. Ever since then, Jeremy couldn't cope with it by the fact that he's on underage drinking and smoking or possibly drugs. I've learned to cope with it by just being by myself and practicing more on my guitar and writing songs. I guess you could say that music is my passion and my coping, and I've been praised a lot by everyone at the Grill who says that I'm a great singer. I mean I try to believe but I don't think I would be capable of becoming a musician. I mean it is my dream but, ever since my parent's tragic death . . . I don't think I can learn to manage anything anymore.

"Marni! It's your first day of Sophomore year! Get up!" Elena kept bellowing through my door.

I rolled my sleepy eyes as I sat up, my long dark-brown hair tangled as a hornet's nest as you could say.

I yawned for a moment. "Alright Elena," I yelled. "You can go away now!"

I could picture Elena rolling her pretty little eyes as she grunted behind the door and echoed her footsteps by walking away from my room. Finally.

I sighed as I threw the covers off of me as I stumbled off the bed, still half-asleep. I was never a person to rise and shine early in the mornings like Elena was. Like I always tell Elena: I need at least 10 hours of sleep before I'm fully awake.

I trudged to my bathroom that I have to share with Jer. Elena was so lucky to get her own single bathroom in her room but of course I get stuck having to share with my brother.

I greeted Jer tiredly while stifling another yawn. Jer just only half-smiled at me before retreating back to his room. I sighed at Jer. Our brother/sister relationship hasn't been the same ever since the horrifying death of mom and dad.

Mine and Elena's relationship has always been stiff. I mean of course we loved each other but we were just so different. She was girly and I mean girly-girly and I just dress rocker-style with usual skinny jeans or cargos and band-tees or just plain-stuff. The only thing Elena and I will ever have in common is our long, luscious thick brown hair . . . and our same height even though Jer and I are only two years younger than she is.

The funny thing though was that Elena has an olive-complexion while everyone else doesn't. I guess it's just one of those trait coincidences, right?

I shook off my random thoughts as I started the shower for the day . . .

"Toast. I can make toast." Aunt Jenna said in a hurry.

"It's all about the coffee Aunt Jenna." Elena said, pouring herself a cup of coffee.

I smirked as I easily took the coffee away from Elena as she was about to drink it.

"Marni!" Elena complained.

"What? I'm just thirsty." I said innocently, cracking a giggle at Elena for giving me a playful glare.

"You're so mean." Elena teased, grabbing another cup of coffee.

I pointed a finger at her. "And don't you forget it."

Elena rolled her eyes at me as Jer came into the kitchen. "Is there coffee?"

I ignored him as I was about to sip my coffee but Jer snatched it away from my hands.

"Hey! That's mine." I protested, but Jer ignored me as he was already drinking it.

Elena laughed at me, "Ha, ha." Elena mocked me.

I rolled my eyes before taking Elena's second cup of coffee, making her look at me disbelievingly.

I smirked at her. "Payback's a bitch isn't it?"

"Don't say bitch, Marni." Aunt Jenna told me.

I scoffed before taking a sip of the coffee.

"You're first day of school and I'm totally unprepared." Aunt Jenna said. "Lunch money?"

"Yeah, I need a $20." I said, playfully holding out my hand.

Aunt Jenna rolled her eyes at me. "That's not lunch money."

I shrugged. "Sure it is. It's money and money is money." I pointed out.

Aunt Jenna just scoffed at my statement before rummaging through everything, trying to get ready to leave.

"Anything else? A number two pencil?" Jenna asked. "What am I missing?"

"Don't you have a big presentation today?" Elena questioned.

"I'm meeting with my thesis advisor at . . ." Jenna checked her watch. "Now! Crap!"

"You better get on the road then." I sang in a sing-song voice.

Jenna sighed at me as Elena reassured her, "You should go. We'll be fine. And just to tell you, Marni will be riding with me and Bonnie to school."

I beamed up at the mention of Bonnie's name. "Yay!" I cheered.

Aunt Jenna smiled at all of us before leaving to her presentation.

"You okay?" Elena asked Jer.

Jer shook his head at her, "Don't start."

I sighed at Jer, "Don't be such a butt-head."

"Don't you start with me today too, Marni." Jer said to me.

I only gave him a sad and empty look as he somberly past me and Elena.
