Finally, finally, finished this. Sorry it took so long.
"So," Hayner asked. "What are these photos actually for?" Seifer was sat at his kitchen table, sorting through prints of the pictures he had taken of Hayner. Hayner was resting on Seifer's shoulders. "My boss basically entered me into some competition for some magazine. Without telling me. She said they were looking for a photographer."
"And do you know which magazine this is for?"
"Nope. She said just to give them to her and she'd send them off." Seifer flicked through a couple more photos. "She said I could send five of them."
"Well," Hayner said, "I think this one should be one of them." He reached over Seifer's shoulder and pointed to the one they were both in. "Why?" Seifer asked.
"Dunno." Hayner said. "I just like it." Seifer rolled his eyes.
"Okay." he said. Hayner gave him a kiss on the cheek.
Three weeks later, Seifer and Hayner were on the sofa, watching a film, when the phone rang. Seifer got up and answered it. "Hello? Oh... hey, boss... oh... okay... right... Wednesday at four... okay then... yes... okay... bye." He hung up. Hayner looked up as he entered the living room. "What's up?" he asked. Seifer took a deep breath.
"Basically, I won the photo competition, but they want to take both of us on as models instead of taking just me on as a photographer." Hayner stared at him, incredulously. "You can't be fucking serious."
"I am. They want to see us on Wednesday at four, at their offices."
"Oh. Are you sure your boss isn't kidding about with you?" Hayner asked, weakly.
"She's not the type to kid." Seifer replied. He sat down next to Hayner and wrapped an arm around him. Hayner leant his head on Seifer's shoulder. "You're not scared, are you?" Seifer teased.
"No." Hayner replied. "Just a little freaked out." Seifer chuckled and kissed the top of Hayner's head. "Don't be." he whispered. "Because you're perfect for their job." Hayner lifted his head from Seifer's shoulder and kissed him. "Only if you're there with me." he whispered back.
"Every step of the way. Always." Seifer murmured.
On Wednesday, at quarter to four, after school, they left Hayner's house, which was closer to the magazine's offices, and headed into the centre of the town. At four, they arrived at the offices. At the reception, they were told to wait. Then, a woman came through into the reception and said that Mr Wakefield was ready to see them. Nervous, they got up and followed her into Mr Wakefield's office. Mr Wakefield was thin and grey. He wore a grey suit and had grey hair, but startlingly blue eyes. He peered at them carefully when they entered and almost immediately announced, "They're perfect! Hire them at once!"
"Mr Wakefield... Would you not like to talk to them?" Even his secretary seemed taken aback by his abrupt manner. Mr Wakefield rolled his eyes. "I said hire them. You can do the hiring. And don't forget to tell them about the first shoot! That will be all." This was clearly a dismissal. The secretary led Hayner and Seifer back out of the office and to her desk. "Well, I'm sorry about Mr Wakefield's abruptness. He's often like that. Normally only when firing people though." She rustled through the paperwork on her desk. "Since you are both minors in the eyes of the law, we cannot offer you full contracts and you have to have parental permission as well. Mr Wakefield won't take no for an answer so I would advise that you go home and get these signed straight away. If you could bring them to the shoot, we'll deal with everything else then. It's on Friday at four."
"Okay." Seifer said and Hayner nodded. "We'll see you then."
"Seifer, I'm scared." Hayner confessed on the way back.
"Me too." Seifer said. "I think you'd be stupid not to be. But we can do this, okay?"
Hayner nodded. "Okay." he said. Seifer took his hand and squeezed it gently in encouragement. Hayner smiled, shyly.
On Friday, after school, they went back to the offices. They were led to a makeup room where they were sat down and poked at for about half an hour. Seifer was pleased to see that the makeup artists seemed to agree with him on the subject of Hayner and guyliner. When they were eventually done, they were led to a large room and stood in front of a large white canvas. Seifer didn't recognise the man who stood behind the camera, instructing them on how to pose. The camera clicked twice, surprising Seifer. The man told them to change positions and instructed them again.
Two hours later, they were done. They were told that the pictures would be in that month's issue of the magazine. As they were walking home, Hayner realised something. "Shit." he said.
"What?" Seifer asked.
"Olette gets that magazine. She'll see the photos."
"So?"
"Well, for one, she'll be mad that I didn't tell her." Seifer chuckled.
"Poor Hayner. Scared of a girl."
"Hey. Olette can be fucking terrifying when she wants to be." Seifer laughed again.
Just over a week later, Seifer found out how terrifying Olette could be. Hayner had sensibly been avoiding her that day: it helped that he had no classes with her. However, Seifer did. She ambushed him after chemistry, at the end of the day, and shoved a magazine in his face. On the front cover, he saw himself and Hayner. "Yes?" he asked her.
"What is this?" Olette was quiet and suddenly Seifer saw that Hayner was right and Olette could be fucking terrifying. "It's... it's..." Seifer was tongue-tied and stuttering. "It's me... and... uh..."
"Me." Seifer heard Hayner's voice and had never been so relieved in his life.
"And you didn't tell me about this because?" Olette asked of Hayner.
"I only just remembered when we were walking back from it." Hayner explained. "Otherwise, I would have told you straightaway, I swear." Olette raised an eyebrow, but seemed to accept Hayner's explanation. She turned and walked off. Seifer relaxed. "See?" Hayner said. "I told you she was fucking terrifying." Seifer rolled his eyes.
"Okay, you were right." Hayner kissed his cheek. Seifer grabbed his hand. "Let's go."
